Deepika-photoIn the latest development to the ongoing controversy around Padmavati, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali appeared before the parliamentary standing committee on Information Technology yesterday. Besides being reprimanded for submitting his film late for the censor certificate, sources said members of the panel also questioned him on his decision to host the film’s screening for select media persons.

Bhansali rejected allegations that his film, based on Rani Padmini, distorted history stating that it is based on sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s poem, Padmavat. The panel gave him two weeks’ time to submit a written reply.

Censor board chief Prasoon Joshi too appeared before the panel, headed by BJP MP Anurag Thakur and including LK Advani and Raj Babbar. Joshi had appeared before another parliamentary panel on petitions earlier yesterday where he stated that a decision on the Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor starrer would be taken only after showing it to experts.
