One of Bollywood’s most iconic villains, Prem Chopra talks about his success mantra as he completes 60 years in the movies today

One of Bollywood’s most iconic villains, Prem Chopra completes 60 years in the industry, today. The veteran will mark the milestone with a celebration at ISKCON auditorium in Juhu this evening, which will see Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, Dharmendra and several other actors, including son-in-law Sharman Joshi, in attendance. At 82, Chopra says he still gets offers – his next, Udanchhoo, is slated to release next month. The senior actor describes his journey as “full of twists and turns laced with failures, setbacks and rewards.”

What kept him going, he reflects, was his determination. “I always wanted to be an actor even though my family had no connection with the film industry. My father was an IAS officer. When I decided to leave Shimla [his hometown] and move to Bombay in the late ’50s, my father warned me that I was opting for the most insecure profession.”

It wasn’t a red carpet welcome into the world of movies. Chopra began by balancing his Punjabi film assignments with a day job in the circulation department of a leading newspaper in Bombay. “I must have juggled at least 10-12 films with the job till it became impossible.”

After the initial struggle, it was the National Award-winning Punjabi film Chaudhary Karnail Singh (1960) that trained the spotlight on him. This was followed by the Hindi film, Hum Hindustani the same year, which had Sunil Dutt and Joy Mukherjee as co-actors. Initially eyeing positive roles, including that in Manoj Kumar’s award-winning Shaheed (1965), he later switched to negative roles when he realised that playing the baddie could keep him going for long. Chopra broke into the big league of baddies after the wild success of Teesri Manzil (1966).

When Raj Kapoor approached Chopra for Bobby (1971), he was already an established actor. Kapoor’s wife Krishna and Chopra’s wife Uma are sisters. “Initially, I had reservations about doing the film as it was not a big role, but Rajji insisted I do it. I later relented. This was the film that gave me my most iconic dialogue, ‘Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra.’ I would have regretted had I not done the film,” says Chopra of the role.

What set the veteran actor apart from his contemporaries was that he didn’t resort to theatrics to drive home the evil. “It was always pure acting,” he says. Chopra has seen several of his peers quit years ago. “But then, it was my goal to keep going. I worked hard, avoided politics and steered clear of controversies. This has been my success mantra.”

Nephew-actorRishi Kapoor‘s actress-wife-Neetu Kapoor shared a black-and-white childhood image of uncle Shashi Kapoor with his father Prithviraj Kapoor. The release and screening of films should not be curbed in a democratic country, says veteran actor Rishi Kapoor

The release and screening of films should not be curbed in a democratic country, says veteran actor Rishi Kapoor. An actor who minces no words when it comes to expressing himself on socio-political issues on social media or otherwise, Rishi spoke to IANS on it when asked about the silence of some sections of the film fraternity on the political intervention in cinema. He said: “I don’t want to comment on this, it’s sad whatever has happened.”

Rishi didn’t take any names, but amid the ongoing uproar over the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmavati”, it was clear what he was pointing towards.

“I feel that (the release of) films in this democracy should not be curbed. My only relevant point which I totally agree with the filmmakers is that, please see his film and then pass a comment. Without seeing the film, how can you agitate,” he said.

Rishi said that it’s “absolutely wrong” to protest against a film without watching it.

“First watch the film. If you find something wrong in it, then you protest against it or do whatever you want to. Without watching the film you started disrupting, agitating and started violence. That’s absolutely wrong,” Rishi said.

But doesn’t he think industry people refrain from commenting on others’ issues as their own film is not facing the music?

“I have no answer to that. Each one to its own,” said the actor, who is shooting for his new film “Rajma Chawal” in old Delhi.

“Padmavati” was scheduled for release on December 1, but it has been deferred since it has not got clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and has been banned for release in various Indian states like Madya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bihar and Punjab.

Meanwhile, “S Durga”, a Malayalam movie, was initially dropped from a jury-suggested shortlist of the Indian Panorama section of the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) along with another film “Nude”.

RishiLike all other usual events, this event too had an interaction set for the media and Photographers with the actor. But, due to unknown reasons the actor was said to have behaved rude with the media even before the interaction started off.

According to a source, “The photographers were only clicking the pictures of the actor but, he suddenly lashed out on them saying, “Peeche Jao light bohot strong hai (Go back Lights are too strong), Back Please!” adds the source.

Seeing his blunt replies the Shutter bugs are said to have upset with the actor as they were only doing their job. Apparently, the actor even asked the reporters to only ask questions that is connected to the event and he won’t be entertaining any questions on his son Ranbir Kapoor.

Talking further about the situation one of the photographers also shared that, “It’s likely, known to everyone now that he (Rishi Kapoor) is tough with his words and most of the times he speaks straight on our face. That’s fine! He is a veteran actor and we respect him. But, it wasn’t even like the reporters had asked him any questions about Ranbir and Mahira or about anyone and he suddenly started bashing us. We do respect him a lot and as per our job we do our work of clicking pictures of them. Just a request to him to turn right or left a bit makes him angry. Everybody needs and wants atleast one nice picture of the stars to publish in their respective news portals. We do get they are big stars and have a busy schedule but, all we want is some respect from the stars towards our work as we too struggle a lot.”

On the work front, Rishi Kapoor will next be seen in 102 Not Out which also stars Amitabh Bachchan along-with him. Directed by Umesh Shukla and produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar the film is set to release on December 1, 2017 with a clash of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much awaited film Pamavati.
