'Newness' Is Making Us Swipe Right With All That There Is To Know About Modern Day Dating

If it’s one thing online dating has taught us, it’s to never give up. I was contemplating what to watch on Netflix last Sunday, while at home, and a dozen things showed up on my screen. I remember hearing someone talk about this ‘epic’ movie on modern day relationships on Netflix and I couldn’t find a better time to watch it. I cued the movie on and now I am sitting and penning down what I gathered from the movie that showed the ‘dullness’ of emotion, in too little a time.

‘Newness’, a complete juxtaposition of the dating lives of a millennial couple, had me really intrigued. I started thinking about the solemn transition of old school dating to what it has become now and this movie made so much sense with that tangent in place. I am a sucker for old school romance where you stand your ground firm and fight anything plaguing the relationship but with the advent of a completely new dating age, situations are targeted for risks at the brink of a ‘right swipe’. Although this movie tried to hold the essence of old school dating really hard, it also gave a rather submissive peak into what dating has now become, in the present.

Although this movie is a constant reminder about not working too hard on relationships and the next love of your life could be a Tinder match away, it also throws an outline about ‘what happens when you actually find love on a dating app’?

Martin (Nicholas Hault) and Gabi (Laia Costa) are living a typical ‘dull’ millennial existence. Dull because they define their daily dose of excitement through probable Tinder matches. They both are addicted to Tinder and finding the right person to sleep with is on their agenda. Things don’t always go as one expects them to and hence they keep meeting the wrong people all the time. Case in point: Martin shrugs off his colleagues to hook up with a Tinder Swipe. The evening doesn’t go as planned and he finds out that the girl is down one too many Klonopin pills and she throws up. Gabi, on the other hand has her status on the dating app set as ‘DTF’ ( I am gonna let you Google that one on your own) and she’s very clear as to what she wants. She matches with an Instagram model, who is mighty selfish in bed. After going through rancid experiences in their respective dating lives, they finally swipe on each other and that’s when it begins!

What’s expected to be a night of just sex turns out to be an all-nighter date. They spend the night talking and getting to know each other and eventually have sex that is both intense and satisfying. Gabi stays the night and the next day, while they spend it strolling about art museums and one montage later, they’re a couple who have marathon bouts of physical intimacy! Before you know it, they’re facing their first triumph as a couple: deleting their dating apps, together!

Martin is extremely handsome and kind but terse while Gabi is free-spirited and an open book. Of course, complications arise due to their personality differences and after a huge fight one night, they term themselves as ‘incompatible’ and sleep with other people, simultaneously. After they come clean to each other about the mutual cheating, they decide to experiment with the likes of an ‘open relationship’. Open relationships are an acquired taste and it’s really not for everybody. I believe modernity offers so much sex, it’s really so easy to stray and latch on to things that make more sense out of behaving a particular way.

For Marin and Gabi, seeing other people, while still seeing each other made so much sense in their sex-charged love life that they both tried to adapt to the lifestyle, to the best of their abilities. They spy on one another flirting, they keep no secrets and have threesomes and it seems to be working for the two of them. Or so they think. Being in a open or a polyamorous relationship is incredibly tough if you’re not emotionally strong to handle it. Logically, it makes sense, while you find the ‘forever mate’, you’re allowed to experiment and experience other fractions of love too. But to understand the dynamic of such a relationship, the couple has to be a bit brazen in life. The projection of an open relationship in this movie though has been a bit bleak. While they have intertwined Gabi’s emotions and Martin’s dilemmas, they have failed to make sense of why they’ve pegged a romantic story as a soiree of sexual fantasies.

But one good lesson that came out of this movie is the fact that people realise their mistakes only after they’ve made one too many. In this case, Martin and Gabi ultimately end up together after noticing how they’re actually incomplete without each other, while philandering about with other men and women. Do open relationships strengthen the bond between an existing couple? Something to think about.

For now, I feel the audience was looking forward to falling in love with the idea of the characters being in love but that emotion was swiftly taken away from us. The basic essence of a couple in ‘love’ is missing in their characters and it makes the movie seem a little dull and dreary between the two of them, with no inner lives, no ‘life, likes and the universe’ kinda conversations and a black and grey perspective on everything. Is this the actual advent of modern day relationships? I shudder to think!

When Fallon asked him if the ‘rumour’ of another ‘Die Hard’ was true, Bruce Willis confirmed “I’m about to wing out to California to start to see what the script looks like. So I think [it will happen]. Yeah.”

Which truly means there is a script under consideration and it will definitely feature Bruce in a leading role once again. The big question though is-will it be a Christmas release?

‘Die Hard’ has also been added to the National Film Registry by Congress, which Bruce believes is a great honour.

Daniel Craig still has one Bond film up his sleeve but people are already betting on the next probable bond! Daniel’s exit from the Bond franchise will leave a subtle hint of disappointment all around but we’re hopeful the next Bond will do deserving justice to the role and why shouldn’t he? It’s the most reactionary and overrated role in British cinema, ever!

His odds to become the next Bond were quite high a while ago but they’ve been slashed tremendously after his recent series ‘Peaky Blinders’ started doing well, where he plays Tommy Shelby.

Why: We can totally see Murphy giving the Bond character a fresh and an exciting take. With the beautiful blue eyed charm and chiselled cheek bones, his character as Tommy Shelby is quite similar to that of James Bond in many ways, being a ladies’ man, with an air of mystery around him. Personally I wish it’s him!

But of course! He’s inarguably one of the most talented actors around right now (seen Locke?) but he isn’t sure yet if he’d want to take up the role. But there’s no harm in assuming he could!

Why: If you look at him carefully, I believe he physically resembles Fleming’s Bond, with his natural build and a dangerous edge! And moreover so, he did play a Bond like character in Nolan’s ‘Inception’, so we already know how awesome his idea of Bond is going to be. Unfortunately though Hardy fuelled a debate recently by saying “There’s a saying amongst us in the fraternity of acting… that if you talk about it (Bond rumours) you’re automatically out of the race. So I can’t possibly comment on that one!” . Seems like Bond wants Hardy more than Hardy wants Bond!

Remember Magneto from the latest X-Men Franchise? A typical Hollywood heavyweight, Fassbender can make for the perfect English spy. But he’s sceptical about taking up the franchise too and has already said no! (is it because he’s half German?) That doesn’t stop me from listing him here anyway!

Why: For one, definitely revisit ‘Inglorious Basterds’ where he plays Lieutenant Archie Hicox , a model British soldier who respects the chain of command and you’ll see what I mean. He’s always the wise quaint, intellectual man, who can kill you with his thumb! Exactly how Bond is envisioned! At 39, he’s an actor at the height of his powers!

A very popular choice with critics and fans alike, Elba has been a star contender for playing the next Bond.

Why: What’s there to ask? Tall, handsome, charismatic and suave, he has all that it takes to become the next Bond. We’ve already seen how tough he is playing John Luther, in the British crime drama series ‘Luther’ and I believe he checks all the boxes! Apart from all that, his casting would be historic of course but Elba feels there should be less emphasis laid on him playing a ‘black Bond’ and more emphasis on a natural Bond, who happens to be black! The only problem, though, he’s 43 (four years younger than Craig) and ideally, Bond should last at least a decade!

After a ‘black Bond’ are you ready for ‘ginger hair Bond?’ Also, how cool was Band of Brothers? I absolutely dug the series! (it also earned him a Golden Globe nomination BTW!)

Why: A very smooth performer, Lewis will be a whiff of fresh air, after Craig’s very blunt character. His work in ‘Homeland’ was exceptional and with the calibre of adorning a hard working role always, he’s going to do full justice to Bond. He’s 45, which means, he may never be seen as Bond! But he’s definitely one of my favourites on the Bond wish list!

I will definitely pay big monies to see Jackman as Bond! My personal favourite, I wish for him to break out of ‘Wolverine’ and sip some dry Vodka Martini – Shaken, not stirred, on screen.

Why: A fine actor, a definitive ‘manly-man’ and that attitude he carries forth with his roles-he’d make the perfect Bond! Alas, he turned the role down even before Craig was considered to play Bond! Why Hugh why!

TV Star Norton’s career skyrocketed with ‘Happy Valley’, ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Grantchester’. I am sure, playing Bond is totally his kinda thing.

Why: I am quite certain Norton can slip into Bond’s character easily with his boyish charms and suave personality to match 007. Young, well educated, attractive and smart AND a rising good actor, what’s there not to consider? Except maybe, his transition from a TV actor to James Bond might take time and people probably will not recognise him as Bond immediately.

The first film was released back in 1998, when you were still too young to remember it! But I am sure you’ve seen all three parts by now and it’s already amongst your favourite franchises. The film had massive success thanks to the memorable dialogues and all that kung-fu! Case in point: “Do you understand the words coming out of my mouth”. I bet you said that a lot when the movie was first released!

Jackie Chang when spoken to earlier, had already confirmed that he’s involved in the fourth part of the film. Chris Tucker, however, was still uncertain at the time.

The film was very well received at the Sundance Film festival a few months ago and was termed as ‘one of the scariest movies to be screened ever’. The movie revolves around the passing away of the matriarch of the Graham family, after which the daughter of the family begins to unravel cryptic and terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the chaotic it gets. Definitely catch this one.

‘Mama 2’ is a sequel to the 2013 Spanish horror release ‘Mama’, which was about two young girls who were abandoned in the forest cabin and fostered by an unknown entity they fondly call Mama. The plot for the second part is still unknown but it’s clearly the most awaited movie of the year.

The plot is similar to the first release where a group of soldiers find themselves stranded in a jungle with the ‘Predator’ hunting them one by one. Watch out for this one because it’s going to be a real treat.

James Cameron Is Directing The New 'Avatar' Sequels And We're Excited To See Some New Cast Members

What do you get when you put James Cameron and a gush of experiential transcendental action packed drama, together in a box? The most expensive movie ever made, duh! Hold your breath for some mind twisting $1 billion sequels of the movie ‘Avatar’, coming your way in the next couple of years and we kid you not when we say director Cameron can afford just about any actor to star in his sequels.

Joining him for the sequels this time though is Kate Winslet, who is rumoured to star in the forthcoming series, making her James’s lucky charm, after the thriving success of Titanic, the second highest grossing film of all time; the highest being Avatar, of course.

Eight years after the raging success and extravagant CGI effects of the original ‘Avatar’, Cameron has officially started the production on four sequels (yes, four!), which will be filmed over the coming years. The first one is out on December 18, 2020, and the remaining three are out December 17 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025, respectively. All these sequels will be shot back-to-back and we’re not sure for now how many will have Kate Winslet staring in them. Let’s hope for at least 2, if not all!

Along with the original ‘Avatar’ –Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sam Worthington, we’ll see a lot of new child actors, who have recently been announced for the sequel. Remember Jake Sully and Neytiri’s (played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana) whirlwind of a romance back in Pandora? Turns out the leading characters have been busy for the last eight years and now they have three kids in the upcoming sequels: Neteyam, Lo’ak and Tuktirey, played by Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton and Trinity Bliss respectively. Then we have the Metkayina clan members, which include Tsireya (Baily Bass), Aonung (Felip Geljo), and Rotxo (Duane Evans Jr.).

That’s one helluva cast! Cameron’s focused on the young guns aka the future generations of Pandora to take the sequels forward and we can’t wait to see how they go about it. We actually can’t wait to see Kate bestow her finest in these series. Right now though, you should catch her new romance disaster survival film, alongside Idris Elba called ‘The Mountain Between Us’.

Thomas Beach Alter, also known as Tom Alter, was a loved figure of the Indian Cinema fraternity and was best known for playing a staunch British Official in many movies. He died earlier this week, after giving us 40 years of uninterrupted and dedicated cinema and he will forever be remembered for some of his prominent roles that we absolutely loved!

From ‘Gandhi’ to ‘Junoon’ to even ‘Shaktiman’, a fine actor to watch on screen and in theatre, he has definitely left a legacy behind with his fine acting skills. The actor sadly passed away after battling stage 4 of cancer.

Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977)

Tom started his Bollywood journey with this Satyajit Ray film. The movie was based on Munshi Premchand’s short story. The film is based on the eve of the 1857 Indian Rebellion and two wealthy Indian men who love to indulge in a game of chess amidst scheming British officials of the East India Company. Tom played the role of Captain Weston, an aide de camp to General James Outram, a prominent English general who fought the rebellion.

Here’s some great new for all Mithali Raj fans out there! The young Indian cricket team captain, who led India’s cricket team to the finals of the ICC Women’s World Cup, in England, earlier this year, has been credited as one of the most influential women in India by the BBC, in their ‘100 most influential women’ list.

The list is basically a collection of women, from all over the world, from different walks of life, who have been positive influencers in society. The list is mainly inspired by the BBC 100 Women Challenge and includes women who have tackled some of the biggest problems facing women around the world. The challenge will be held in New Delhi from October 9-13, where a team formed will look into female illiteracy. The challenge is happening all around the world, where different teams are formed to tackle the issues and challenges surrounding the particular place. Other places hosting the 100 Women Challenge are Silicon Valley, where the group will tackle the glass ceiling. Nairobi and London teams will focus on improving safety in public transports and finally Rio’s team will work towards sexism in sports (we need a debate or two about that, in India!).

It’s a moment of pride for us as our very own highest run-scorer in the ODIs is considered as a top influencer along with some more Indian women. The others who made it on the list are – Ira Trivedi: writer, yoga teacher and an activist, Aditi Avasthi: founder and CEO of Embibe, Tulika Kiran: She has been teaching kids at Tihar jail for the past 8 years, Mehroonisa Siddiqui: mother of Indian actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Dr. Urvashi Sahni: Women’s right activist and educationist.

The whole idea of pushing society towards recognising talent amongst women is much needed in the new world order. We’re not saying men don’t qualify for such a list but more often than not, women are undermined for their achievements in various fields and this list just puts their efforts out there. Women speaking out on issues concerning public spheres and actively working towards rectifying these issues, hence, is a challenge that needs sole recognistion and we’re more than happy that the BBC has defined a promising way to do so!

RJ Akash Banerjee Has A Thing Or Two To Say About The Current Government And It's Hilarious!

Nothing has been a longer wait in this country than ‘acche din’ and even if you have witnessed some ‘acche din’ there will be someone or the other criticising the NDA government, at any given point in time for things they’ve promised and not delivered. This time we have Radio Mirchi RJ Akash Banerjee, ranting for almost ten minutes about the various deliverables that were promised by the government and have been casually forgotten or not talked about again, especially by our honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The video of his rant went up live on Twitter yesterday and the Internet is loving the hilarity with which he is using his sarcasm to take pot shots at the present government for failing to live up to their promises.

The video starts with him talking about three major developments that came up in the last 24 hours, like FIRs issued against a 1000 BHU students and the PM not saying a word about it, Farookh Ahmed Dar who has been proven innocent and the Saubhagya scheme which promises to provide electricity to all households by December 2018, free for the poor and at very low cost to others. While taunting PM Modi’s far fetched modus operandi, Banerjee keeps insinuating these plans as being ‘joomlas’ which vaguely translate to empty promises!

He also mocks PM Modi’s other ‘joomlas’ like the scheme of giving INR 15 lakhs to the poor, from the recovered black money or the various Vikas Yojna’s (development schemes), or the increasing petrol prices and of course, demonetisation.

Akash, also talks about how a population of 1.3 billion is suffering from a grave medical condition which affects the eyes and it’s like having motiabind (cataract) but instead of motiabind, it’s actually Modiabind! The puns are a bit hard hitting but maybe that’s his way of reaching out to his listeners and showing them what true democracy actually is, by speaking his mind out. The Modi government, according to him, has been re-packaging their schemes and whatever was promised a year ago, is still in conversation by the government currently; case in point- the Saubhagya Scheme.

In the end, Akash urges the janta to take their Modi glasses off and ask the right questions to the government which should mostly involve the original BJP mandate and the various development schemes that were promised by them. He is definitely not asking the people to not vote for the Modi government in the 2019 general elections but instead is asking his listeners and by listeners we mean the ‘aam janta’ to thoroughly question the government, before bringing them into power again.
