The first episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ did exactly what it was meant to – tease our curiosity just enough to make us impatient for the next episode. The episode also made it quite clear that the women of GOT were here to rule and they ain’t taking shit anymore. While Arya moves on towards Kings’ Landing after a bout of badassery at the House of Frey, Daenerys arrives at Dragonstone with steely resolve in her eyes.

Much impatient as we are to see the 2nd episode, HBO has released a set of new pictures along with a brief synopsis, giving us a teaser of what is to come. The synopsis reads:

“Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) receives an unexpected visitor. Jon (Kit Harington) faces a revolt. Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) plans the conquest of Westeros.”

Let’s look at the pictures and try to decipher what they mean:

Definitely a confrontation between Jon Snow and Littlefinger! About time. We wonder if Petyr Baelish will move back to Vale or if he’ll be able to change Sansa’s loyalties.

That looks like Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand. Clearly, Daenerys is getting more allies on her side. Remember how in last season, Yara and Theon set off with a thousand ships for Mereen.

Clearly, winter has arrived. Jon Snow could be travelling in search of dragonglass, the only material that can kill a Whitewalker. Little does he know that his dear friend Sam Tarly has already stumbled upon the location of dragonglass – the map in the book says there is a mountain of dragonglass at Dragonstone.

Frankly, we are eagerly awaiting Arya’s adventures, considering her savage sequence in the first episode. From the picture, it looks like she’s still in the North, obviously because King’s Landing is a thousand miles away. But the anxious look on her face betrays a tough encounter on the way.

The shitty torture Samwell Tarly is subjected to still makes us want to hurl. This photograph gives us some hope he might just have been able to convince the maester of the impending danger from the whitewalkers.

Much has been said about Sansa’s new hairstyle that is strikingly similar to Cersei’s. With this grim expression in the next episode, we think there might be some hard decisions she will be seen making. There are already speculations that she might turn evil like Cersei, someone who has inadvertently taught her the ways of the world.

The one thing we want in a life partner is a mutual love for the same web series and movies. Taking their love for ‘Game Of Thrones’ and for each other to a whole new level is this Mumbai-based couple Shaurya and Sanjana Mehta, who recently had a GOT-themed Sangeet ceremony in Udaipur. That’s right, the hardcore GOT fans had a sangeet ceremony with the show’s theme, replete with the house banners, dragon egg replicas, Valyrian swords and the Iron Throne!

The idea was first suggested as a joke when their families sat down to discuss themes for the wedding. But soon, it stuck. The groom Shaurya, who originally came up with the idea, says, “I first thought of it for the wedding and the very next thought of ‘The Red Wedding’ got me to choose it for the Cocktail / Sangeet.”

The couple made a grand entry as they were given a sword salute by relatives to the music of ‘Winds of Winter.

The Iron Throne looked formidable in the backdrop of a map of the seven kingdoms. “It was made over a week in Mumbai and then taken to Udaipur by a lorry. It remains a prized possession,” says Shaurya.

We are not new to racism – racism on the basis of caste, class, religion, skin colour, social status; hell we even do it on the basis of regional identities. The discrimination against dark skin goes way back, when the Indian society was divided into 4 rigidly divided castes – Brahmins, Shudras, Vaishnavas, Kshatriyas. Dark skin was seen as unclean and a sign of impurity. We gained independence and a little bit of sense and the caste system had already been demolished, but the prejudices remained.

Dark skin is still seen with disdain by many in our country. The obsession with fair skin is directly proportional to the contempt for dark skin. It affects both men and women, women more. How could our dear old Bollywood stay behind? The film industry is riddled with racist prejudices, sexism, misogyny, nepotism (going by the recent IIFA awards, unapologetically so), even though it has also functioned as a class equalizer.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Tweet About Being Dark-Skinned In Bollywood © Facebook

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the immensely talented actor with quite a few critically acclaimed performances to his credit, has thrown major shade at this colour-based racism prevalent in Bollywood. The actor tweeted:

Thank U 4 making me realise dat I cannot b paired along wid d fair & handsome bcz I m dark & not good looking, but I never focus on that.

— Nawazuddin Siddiqui (@Nawazuddin_S) July 17, 2017

Despite being an exceptionally gifted actor who has imparted depth to every role he essayed, Nawazuddin has faced discrimination due to his colour and unconventional looks. In his tweet, he hasn’t pointed out the context but it’s clear that the discrimination hasn’t gone down well.

In the film industry, looks often precede talent. It’s no secret that a good-looking actor will find it easier to enter the industry than someone who is not, even though he/she may be talented. Being stereotyped because of your looks is common in the industry – and dark skin comes on top of that list.

Thankfully, Twitter fares better than Bollywood, and people came out in support of Nawazuddin and showered him with compliments:

He need not even bother about looks because his talent speaks for itself and puts him at the top.

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s latest release ‘Jagga Jasoos’ has got decent reviews, and the actors have been doing a lot of interviews. AIB just released a podcast with Ranbir and it’s one of the very few times you see Ranbir being so candid. But that doesn’t stop the AIB guys from roasting him every now and then in the interview.

From talking about nepotism in the film industry,

With the 7th season of ‘Game of Thrones’ around the corner, we can barely conceal our excitement. While we’re sure you are already revising the previous seasons, we are obsessing over the sassy insults the characters have been hurling at each other in every episode. If there’s one thing that stands out after the palace intrigues and gruesome action, it’s the clever dialogues. While we love Tyrion and Cersei for handing out the meanest of insults, there are some more hidden gems in the series that you simply cannot miss.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has had a long journey. From struggling to get into his college football team to winning 17 wrestling championships to becoming one of the most loved Hollywood stars, The Rock has come a long way. The man works out like a beast and has never shied away from hard work.

Dwayne Johnson Reveals How His Dad Taught Him The Most Important Lesson In Life© Instagram/The Rock

In a moving post on Instagram, The Rock shared how his father taught him an unforgettable lesson in life – one that made him the man he is today. He revealed how his father pushed him to strive harder in life, to give his everything to a task at hand. To sweat it out even if it meant getting his ass whipped.

He says: “Leaving it all…means you give every f*cking ounce of effort you can, to give the best performance you can give. Whatever it is you do, whatever job you have.. at the end of the day, leave it all there.”

Leave it all on the set.  Back when I was a punk kid my dad would take me to the gym on weekends and kick the shit outta me in the weight room and on the wrestling mats. He’d say you didn’t get up early to come here and give half ass effort. Leave it all in the gym.  Years later when I played ball at The U, we applied the same principles: we left it all on the field. When I became a pro wrestler, that was part of my nightly pre match prayer. Asked for the strength to leave it all in ring – whether I was wrestling in flea markets or sold out stadiums.  Leaving it all…means you give every f*cking ounce of effort you can, to give the best performance you can give.  Whatever it is you do, whatever job you have.. at the end of the day, leave it all there.  Rampage has been the most physically grueling role of my career. Got my ass kicked and handed back to me the whole movie. But I’m grateful to go to bed ???? satisfied I left it all on the set.  Who the fuck am I kidding, I don’t sleep, but if I did, I still left it all on the set.  #LeaveItAllPhilosophy #Rampage

Dwayne’s father Wayde Douglas Bowles, also known as Rocky Johnson, is a former professional wrestler and a winner of many wrestling championships. His life hasn’t been easy but the man overcame hardships and taught his son a lesson in strength. Dwayne shared his dad’s heartbreaking story last year, when he bought his father a car as a Christmas gift.

He says in the post: “In front of the entire family, my dad’s mom looked at him and said get out. He was 13yrs old and now homeless. That f*cked up true story happened in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1954.”

Bought my dad a Christmas gift and surprised him. He’s had a hard life. This one felt good.  My dad, Rocky Johnson is a minimalist. Always has been. Never asks me for much and over the years his needs are always the barest. Crazy story, my dad’s dad died when he was 13yrs old. That Christmas, my dad’s mom had her new boyfriend over for Christmas dinner. Her boyfriend got drunk and pissed on the turkey. My dad went outside, got a shovel, drew a line in the snow and said if you cross that line I’ll kill you. The drunk crossed it and my dad laid him out cold as a block of ice.  Cops were called. They told my dad’s mom that when her boyfriend regains consciousness, he’s gonna kill your son so one of them has got to go. In front of the entire family, my dad’s mom looked at him and said get out. He was 13yrs old and now homeless. That f*cked up true story happened in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1954. He needed the bare minimum then, just like does now.  Over the years, I’ve moved him into a big home, got him trucks to drive – which he’ll literally drive into the ground until I get him something else. Hell, I’ll get him anything he wants, but the SOB just won’t ask;). Every Christmas, I always think about that story and my dad having every odd stacked against him at 13, but he fought thru it and still made something of himself. Makes me appreciate his struggle and hard work. Also, makes me appreciate the fun times he would beat my ass in the gym so bad when I was 13 and say “If you’re gonna throw up, go outside.. and if you’re gonna cry, then go home to your mother”. I hated it then, but I embrace it now. Made a man outta me. Without pissing on my turkey. ????????????. Just a small way of saying thank you dad and Merry Christmas! #DwantaClaus????????

The Rock has often been vocal about his admiration and love for his father. His father’s tale of struggle is an inspiration for many, but the lessons he taught his son are even bigger. Fathers can give you immense strength and now we know from where Dwayne Johnson gets his.

There’s nothing better than a good old retro number remixed well. One of the most loved classics ‘Badan Pe Sitare’ by the legendary Mohammad Rafi is an all-time favourite. The Hindi rock band SaaR has come up with a groovy version of the song and we are already tapping our feet.

Though we still like the original version better that had Shammi Kapoor serenading Mumtaz in style,

the new one ain’t too bad either.

Of course, this is not the first time the song has been remixed. Harry Anand made one a few years back.

Which one’s your favourite?!

There are mashups and then there are mashups. Satvik B is a musician from Singapore whose latest cover of 3 songs – SoMo’s ‘Ride’, ‘Raabta’, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s beautiful classic ‘Sannu Ek Pal’ — is sheer magic. Satvik transitions effortlessly between these three of our favourite songs and by the end of the video, you have teleported back to the teenage years of first love.

While Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s original ‘Sannu Ek Pal’ still remains the best version of the song that can be,

we like this version for its refreshing new voice.

Also, while you’re at it, here’s a Bollywood medley by the singer that’s worth listening to:

How often have you discriminated against someone who couldn’t speak fluent English? Or how often have you been at the receiving end of the discrimination? As classist as it sounds, majority of educated Indians are guilty of this prejudice. We complain of racism abroad, but here in India we have practised it without batting an eyelid.

AIB's New Sketch On How You're Judged Because Of Poor English© YouTube

From how someone is dressed to their fluency in the English language, we judge people at the drop of a hat. This prejudice has been institutionalized to the extent that it affects how easily you get a job and even how well you get paid. It’s there in corporate boardrooms, in branded showrooms, in parties and malls.

There are thousands of students from small towns and humble family backgrounds who strive with limited means to get into engineering colleges. And they do. In fact, they excel. Hundreds of IITians and aspiring doctors are from humble families living on bare minimum incomes.

AIB’s latest sketch on the discrimination faced by young engineering candidates hailing from humble backgrounds nails the cultural hypocrisy we practice. As honest as it gets, the guy loses his cool when the interviewer focuses on his English rather than his engineering skills.

Let’s face it – the person who lacks fluency in English is at a disadvantage, especially professionally. Of course, English is a link language and we have to be proficient in it to expose ourselves to global learning. One can’t afford to stay ignorant of what’s happening in the world. But the problem arises when discrimination happens because of diction and spoken English. One might be a scholar who could write impeccable English but still face a problem with today’s stylized slang-heavy English.

While it’s understandable if social circles are different on the basis of mutual tastes and preferences, it is not acceptable when people are put down because of that, especially in workspace.

Up until now in the Indian music industry, if there’s one person who can mimic any and every singer out there, it’s Sonu Nigam. The singer can even sing in a woman’s voice so brilliantly that you won’t be able to tell the difference.

Every singer has his/her own style that sets them apart, but there are a few gifted singers who have all the versatility in the world. And singers have never shied away from trying to stretch their limits. A case in point is Aksh Baghla, who attempted to mimic the voice and singing style of 9 different singers.

His impression of Mika, Sonu Nigam, Arijit Singh, Mohit Chauhan, Sanam Puri, and even Honey Singh is right on point and it’s a no brainer that the guy is exceptionally talented. But even he can’t replicate the magic of the legend that was Jagjit Singh. The ghazal maestro, with his soothing deep voice, really is irreplaceable.

Nevertheless, Aksh’s impression of the singers is pretty impressive and we found ourselves checking out other videos by him. Watch this one that’s a longer version of his impression of other singers, 30 to be precise.
