The Accidental Prime Minister has gone on floors in London. The film has captured the nation’s imagination ever since the first poster of the movie, featuring Anupam Kher bearing an uncanny resemblance to the former PM was released a few months ago. The movie is based on the book by Sanjaya Baru and it has commenced principal photography in London.

The Accidental Prime Minister is a political drama that traces the making and unmaking of former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh.

Speaking about the project, Anupam Kher said, “The opportunity of portraying a contemporary personality like Dr Manmohan Singh in The Accidental Prime Minister is an immense challenge for me as an actor. He is part of a 24/7 media era where world knows his persona minutely. I have been internalizing this character for the past few months. I look forward to translating that effort into cinematic reality.”

The movie is directed by debutant Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, along with Hansal Mehta as the creative producer and also features Akshaye Khanna as Sanjaya Baru, the former media advisor to the PM. The script is written by Mayank Tewari, who recently won the Asian Film Awards for India’s official Oscar’s entry – Newton. The film is produced by Bohra Bros and is slated to release on December 21, 2018.

Watching veteran actor Anupam Kher’s 500th film “The Big Sick” gave his step-son Sikander mixed emotions.

“This is what a great movie should make you feel like. It made me cry and laugh and it was just fantastic,” Sikandar, an actor, said after the film’s India premiere here on Wednesday.

The movie was screened as part of the MAMI year-round programme in association with MVP Entertainment.

Directed by Michael Showalter, “The Big Sick” is about the real life story of comedian Kumail Nanjiani, who not just features in the lead role but has also penned the film’s screenplay with wife Emily Gordon.

It also features Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano and Adeel Akhtar.

The premiere was attended by Vikramaditya Motwane, Harshvardhan Kapoor, Nina Gupta, Ranvir Shorey, Kirti Kulhari, Tanuja Chandra, Adhiraj Bose, Akshay Roy and Naveen Kasturia.

Harshvardhan said: “It just explores so many complex emotions and dynamics between people and cultures.”

Ranvir was happy to see a film which has “a strong South-Asian story set in the US, and it bridges those gaps which are between this world and that world”.

Anupam, who saw the film for the fifth time, says seeing it in India “was the best experience so far”.

The film revolves around Kumail, a comic who meets an American graduate student named Emily at one of his stand-up shows. As their relationship blossoms, he soon becomes worried about what his traditional Muslim parents will think of her.

When Emily suddenly comes down with an illness that leaves her in a coma, Kumail finds himself developing a bond with her deeply concerned mother and father.

The movie is releasing in India on Friday.
