Kumar to pull off high-octane sequences involving sword fighting, Gatka and artillery for Kesari’s elaborate two-month Wai schedule

With his recent outings edging towards social issues, fans of Akshay Kumar have missed watching him pack in a punch on screen. Fortunately, they will be treated to his bravado yet again in Kesari, which will see the actor slip into the role of Havildar Ishar Singh, the leader of the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi. The Khiladi has often put his martial arts skill on display for cinephiles, but he will now be seen pulling off fight sequences involving traditional artillery, sword fighting and Gatka.

The unit of the Kumar and Karan Johar co-production has already set base in the picturesque Wai, Satara, where the large forts of Saragarhi and Gulistan can be recreated. A source reveals that the schedule is crucial, given that filming the action sequences before summer arrives is essential. Talking about the Lawrence Woodward-choreographed stunts, the source adds, “The war sequences are currently being designed. Most of them will feature Akshay, so the action is being created while keeping his physicality in mind. The fight sequences primarily involve the use of traditional artillery. Although the hand-to-hand combat scenes are few, the team is contemplating roping in pehelwans from the akharas of Punjab to lend authenticity. Their presence on set will also ensure that Akshay’s demeanour is aligned with his character.”

Professional Gatka trainers, says the source, are also being appointed to train Kumar in the form. “Since it is the oldest form of self-defence that Sikhs resorted to, it is fitting that the makers showcase it in the film. Akshay has allotted 15 days for training. It involves the use of wooden sticks. It will be mixed with sword fighting,” says the source, adding that a unique pressure point striking technique is also being included in the film. “The team is also sourcing Indian weaponry like gandasas and bhujs for the elaborate scenes.”

While the actor can pull off stunts with panache, the source suggests that replicating ease in traditional action methods is difficult. “Further, the scenes also involve the use of heavy costumes, which can make them difficult to pull off. Wai offers the space that a shoot of this nature requires. The set is currently being created.”
Kumar will join the unit after wrapping up promotional work for his upcoming film, Pad Man, in mid-February. He will be stationed in the mountainous region for two months to wrap up shooting in a start-to-finish schedule.

Singer picks up top gongs and leads with six titles at 60th annual gala held in New York, where politically-charged performances set the order of the night that celebrated music

A series of political statements marked the 60th Annual Grammy Awards held this morning at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, where celebrities took to the stage to address sexual harassment, racism, gun violence, mental health and suicide prevention. Bruno Mars would have left the venue crooning his hit single, That’s What I Like, which earned him the Song Of The Year nod. He also bagged the coveted Album Of The Year (24K) title. His win inspired many frowns as fellow nominees Kendrik Lamar and Jay Z – who delivered 2017’s top albums, Damn and 4:44 respectively – had emerged as expected winners.

Even though Jay Z arrived at the awards night leading the nominations with eight titles, he went home empty-handed. Lamar however managed to give Mars’s six wins tough competition by bagging five awards, including the Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Song (Humble). The rapper opened the show with a power-packed act, subtly shunning gun violence. His performance was punctuated by a spoken word segment from Dave Chappelle, who told the crowd, “The only thing more frightening than watching a black man be honest in America is being an honest black man in America.”

After establishing the theme of the Golden Globes earlier this month, the cause of women against sexual harassment was marked with white roses at the gala. Prior to an emotional outing by Kesha to further the cause, Janelle Monae delivered a message to the industry stating, “We come in peace, but we mean business.” Kesha, draped in white alongside an array of artistes, put up an emotionally-packed performance to Praying, aimed at her alleged abuser, American producer Dr Luke.

With the focus on performances over awards evident from the onset of the James Corden-hosted show – although there were a whopping 83 gongs to be handed out – there were many a dull moments. With artistes like Pink and Sam Smith picking ballad-style renditions for their acts, there were few performances that uplifted the evening. Mars and Cardi B’s vivacious display of colour and dance spread cheer as they belted out the former’s Finesse. Rihanna seduced the audience alongside DJ Khaled on Wild Thoughts.

Another highlight of the night involved the unexpected cameo of Hilary Clinton, who joined Corden in taking a jab at US president Donald Trump. The former presidential candidate, along with Cher, Snoop Dogg, Cardi B, John Legend and Khaled, read excerpts from Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, the book about Trump’s first year in the White House. The bit showed Corden holding auditions for the book reading in the hope of nabbing next year’s best spoken word album.

Vicky Kaushal to slip into the role of Kangana Ranaut’s nemesis in her upcoming thriller set to roll in August

Kangana Ranaut
Kangana Ranaut

With only a short schedule of Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi pending, Kangana Ranaut has turned her attention towards her next project, a whodunit, which she hopes to title Mental. Interestingly, for her debut outing in the genre, Ranaut has zeroed in on Vicky Kaushal to feature alongside her. In a bid to keep the suspense around the thriller intact, insiders, we hear, are keeping their lips sealed about the storyline. However, a source reveals, “Kangana plays a dark character. Vicky slips into the part of her nemesis. He instantly fell for his role when he read the script. The makers wanted someone who could give a tough fight to Kangana’s character, and Vicky has showcased sufficient range to provide the same.”

Vicky Kaushal

Ahead of the first schedule in August, Kaushal we hear, will be allotted 15 days to gain a few pounds for the venture. The development comes after reports of the unit having approached Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao for the part. Kaushal is yet to sign on the dotted line.

While the film was set to roll in February, Ranaut will find herself occupied with the patch work for her Rani Laxmibai biopic before she can dive headfirst into this venture. “With Vicky too having a 40-day schedule for his next, Uri, in the pipeline, it was apt to defer this film.”

With both, commercial and arty ventures on his plate, Manoj Bajpayee discusses how content-driven cinema has given his kind a new lease

Manoj Bajpayee
Manoj Bajpayee

In 2016, a 10-15 line monologue by intelligence agent Ranvir Singh convincing Taapsee Pannu’s Shabana, in Naam Shabana, was proving to be onerous for Manoj Bajpayee. Unrelenting, director Neeraj Pandey had kept him going for 10 takes, and demanded yet another. That the role was offered to Bajpayee on a platter — Pandey literally permitted him to select his character — had made the feat even more cumbersome. “Any other actor in my place would have crumbled,” says Bajpayee, who was “up for the challenge” that the filmmaker hurled at him. And it certainly was one, given that Pandey even refused to point out what it was that was going amiss. “He only says, ‘Second take… third take… fourth take’. He is always looking for something, but the actor will never know what [that is],” Bajpayee says.

That his acting prowess is challenged 25 years into his career implies that Bajpayee welcomes a collaboration with Pandey. His fifth association, the forthcoming Missing, with Tabu, sees Pandey as producer, while the sixth, Aiyaary, has him wield the director’s baton. The intellectual fodder that they offer each other implies that Bajpayee is sure to pick up a conversation with the filmmaker daily, even when they aren’t filming. “Every week, we also grab dinner together at his office or at a restaurant, where stories and ideas make for discussion. Ever-so-often, he sends across a copy of his script for my opinion. He pays heed to them on some occasions, he rejects them on the others. We are similar, intellectually. He understands my dreams and expectations as an actor, and I trust him. But generally, we don’t interfere in one another’s business.”

Even as he awaits the February 9 release of Pandey’s Aiyaary, the actor has his hands full with three other ventures, each of which, interestingly, is targeted at a distinct audience. While Dipesh Jain’s In The Shadows has been appeasing the festival-going audience, Sajid Nadiawala’s Baaghi 2 hopes to draw viewers of mainstream cinema. Bajpayee also has Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK’s The Family Man set for a digital outing, a platform he touts as the “next big thing”. Evidently basking under the glory of the limitless offers, he credits the growth of contextually strong cinema for the increasing attention that cinematic talents have been acquiring. “We are finally heading towards a time when performance-driven actors will be at par with superstars. And that was exactly what the fight was about. The fight was never about mainstream cinema versus art-house films. We just wanted an industry where all sorts of actors could co-exist, and we’re heading there.”

Neeraj Pandey
Neeraj Pandey

Yet, the eventual exhaustion of commercial cinema is unlikely, given the far-reaching effects of mainstream films. “It [commercial cinema] is a genre that is important. It reaches small towns, villages and multiplexes too. But, because of the changing world, especially the growth of the internet, there’s a large audience looking for great content as well. As a result, you get to see films like Aligarh and Budhia Singh.” The demand for great content, he says, is coupled with the desire to see stronger performance from actors of his kind. “Viewers want actors who are known to deliver with their performances to be at par with Western artistes. Also, their demand from every actor is different. They want to see a Salman Khan in a [film like] Tiger Zinda Hai. When they come to see Manoj Bajpayee, they want him [Bajpayee] surprise them with new acts. So, our job is to be really good in every role. And fortunately, while a Tiger Zinda Hai is working, a Newton is too. And this is healthy. There has always been a Robert De Niro and an Al Pacino, but there has also always been a Tom Cruise.”

While his fans would be up for a debate, Bajpayee insists, he has never been a talented actor. Harbouring the love for the craft since childhood, he says he knew he would need to off-set his perceived lack of flair with toil. “I need to work hard to recite every single line. I keep practicing it quietly before I’m required to deliver it. Also, I work on understanding the back-story of my character. If there isn’t one, I try to create it. Because I hold on to it for long. I can’t switch on and switch off. For me, if it’s switched on, it is on for a long time.”

A busy schedule sees Bajpayee neck-deep in work until August. But, after that he intends to take a four-month sabbatical to “refuel” himself for his forthcoming commitments. “It’s an essential for an actor if s/he wishes to be ready for every venture,” says the actor, as he goes on to spill the beans on how he intends to unwind.

“I have already started learning to cook. I’ve realised that it is something that I am slowly growing interested in. I want to cook meals for my daughter and surprise her with one dish or another. I want to give her the memory of her father’s dishes.”
