Malayalam film “S Durga”, which was dropped from the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year, has been cleared by the Revising Committee of the censor board without any cuts

Malayalam film “S Durga”, which was dropped from the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year, has been cleared by the Revising Committee of the censor board without any cuts.

The director of the film, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, today said the movie is now eligible for public screenings, which had received a ‘U/A’ certificate from the censor board.

Sasidharan says he cannot wait for the film to release and is happy with the decision.

“They did not find anything wrong with the film. It is clear now that all that happened was done on purpose,” Sasidharan told PTI.
He also shared the new poster of the movie on Twitter, in which the title reads as, “S DURGA”.

The film courted controversy after it was dropped by IFFI’s Indian Panorama section at the last moment. The director moved the Kerala High Court and received a favourable verdict.

In light of the High Court order, a screening was organised for the festival jury members who sought the intervention of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

On the last day of the festival, the censor board ordered a re-examination of the film, thus derailing its chances to be screened at IFFI.

The bone of contention was the “white rectangular boxes” that followed the letter “S” in the revised title of the movie, which was initially named “Sexy Durga”.

In their affidavit to the Kerala High Court, the filmmaker had said that the white rectangular boxes in the title card of the film were nothing but white patches left in the print following the erasure of the letters ‘exy’ from the original title.

An eight-member Revising Committee reviewed the film on January 23 before clearing it without any cuts.

“The title of the film in the credit roll was shown as ‘S Durga’, without any ‘S ###’ i.e. the rectangular white boxes. The title ‘S Durga’ was the title already certifies by the CBFC, Thiruvananthapuram. It is apparent that the version exhibited for the Jury at IFFI, Goa was differing from the version exhibited for the Revising Committee. In the version shown they did not find any tampering with the title or the font of the title or visuals form as suggested by the Examining Committee,” the CBFC letter, shared by Sasidharan, stated.

The director and the makers have been advised to “only exhibit the version of the film”, reviewed by the Revising Committee.
Marathi film “Nude”, which was also dropped from the Panorama segment, recently received ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC, without any cuts.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has voiced its support to the filmmaking team behind the Oscar-nominated documentary “Last Men in Aleppo” that will not be able to attend the awards ceremony due to travel restrictions

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has voiced its support to the filmmaking team behind the Oscar-nominated documentary “Last Men in Aleppo” that will not be able to attend the awards ceremony due to travel restrictions. “As supporters of filmmakers – and the human rights of all people – around the globe, we stand in solidarity with director Feras Fayyad as well as the film’s producer Kareem Abeed,” the Academy said in a statement to hollywoodreporter.com on Tuesday.

Abeed, who currently resides in Turkey, will not be able to come to the US after being denied a travel visa due to restrictions placed on eight predominantly Muslim countries by the Trump administration. Along with the filmmaker, the documents’ subject, White Helmets founding member Mahmoud Al-Hattar, will also not be able to attend the Oscars.

“Last Men in Aleppo”, which documents those on the frontlines of the Syrian civil war, will be vying for the Best Documentary honour at the March 4 ceremony to be held here.

Oscar-winning Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who was nominated in the Best Foreign-Language Film for “The Salesman”, did not attend last year’s Academy Awards to protest US President Donald Trump’s policy. Khaled Khateeb, the Syrian cinematographer behind last year’s documentary short Oscar nominee “The White Helmets”, was barred from entering the country. Both Farhadi and Khateeb’s films went on to win in their respective categories.

She has received appreciations from critics and audiences alike for films like Pink, Naam Shabana and Judwaa 2, but actress Taapsee Pannu, who has been described as the “most powerful woman of the year” by a magazine, says she is yet to succeed

She has received appreciations from critics and audiences alike for films like Pink, Naam Shabana and Judwaa 2, but actress Taapsee Pannu, who has been described as the “most powerful woman of the year” by a magazine, says she is yet to touch stardom and still feels like a struggler.

Considering her achievements, does she feel she has gained stardom?

“Not at all. I don’t even feel like a star. I still feel like a struggler because I need to really work hard and make sure that my Friday works for me. I still don’t feel I am the one who will get the audience into theatres as yet. I don’t see that I have that pull, I am trying to make that,” Taapsee told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

She started her career as a model in 2008 and made her acting debut with Telugu film “Jhummandi Naadam” in 2010. Three years later, she stepped into Bollywood with Chashme Baddoor.

“The day I feel my audience is taking a ticket of my film and says ‘It’s Taapsee’s film, let’s go and watch it’, that day I will believe I am a star, before that no,” she added.

She has featured in a myriad of genres like comedy, thriller, drama, courtroom drama and romance.

Asked if she is trying to balance between genres, she said: “Of course yes, that is the idea behind mixing things up because I feel if I keep doing hard-hitting films which people (the audience) have loved me in and I am very happy about it, I feel people will stereotype me. They will start calling me that I am someone who does only these kind of not so mainstream cinema.”

The actress says she does not want to get pigeonholed in a particular genre.

“I don’t want them (the audience) to stereotype me because then the impact of these hard-hitting films will die down after a time because they would know what they would expect out of me. So, the fun is to mix and match because then you don’t know what you are coming up with next,” she added.

Taapsee, 30, is riding the burgeoning wave of films with female lead or co-lead roles with films like “Baby”, “Naam Shabana” and “Pink”. She feels confident that it is a trend going in the right direction and will continue.

Talking about the swift change from male to female lead actors in films, Taapsee said: “Of course efforts have been made and I am so happy to see each and every leading lady trying to make an effort to do a female-centric film. I think it’s a good way to begin at least to be open to taking risks and chances.”

The actress said that when she made her debut, she only saw particular actresses, who weren’t termed as mainstream heroines and doing female-centric movies.

“But within four years, you can see such a huge change where all the female A-listers, mainstream actresses today are doing at least one female-centric film a year which is so beautiful to see and the result of it is at par as the male-centric film but at least it is headed towards the right direction,” she added.

Taapsee also credits the audience for the positive shift.

“We are giving the audience content and the audience is slightly opening up I feel… At least they are giving us little bit of an opportunity. We just need to make sure to do good films as female protagonists as the audience continues to believe in us,” she added.

On Tuesday, Hrithik Roshan was spotted shooting for Anand Kumar’s biopic – Super 30 in Jaipur, directed by Vikas Bahl. The actor was shooting in the scorching afternoon heat. He was seen selling papads on a bicycle, as he drove the vehicle in the villager avatar wearing a cotton shirt and brown pants. His rugged look has drove his fans crazy. He is portraying mathematician Anand Kumar in the upcoming biopic.

Talking about the biopic, Anand Kumar had said earlier in an interview with mid-day, “Both Hrithik and Vikas have kept me in the loop. They want to make the story as authentic as possible. They have taken a lot of research material from me. Vikas has promised that I will be consulted at every point during the research and writing process. I’m satisfied with the way it’s shaping up,” he says.

While he has had several takers for his biopic, Kumar is certain that Roshan is the best choice to bring his story on screen. “I understand that Hrithik cannot look like me, but that is not the point of the film. He wants to embrace the spirit of my story,” he says, adding that the actor will undergo a few months’ training before the project goes on floors.

Talking about being the subject of a Bollywood film, he says, “I was skeptical about giving out my story to anyone, but Vikas really convinced me. I could see their drive at creating something unique.”

One might suspect that his skepticism was a case of once bitten, twice shy – Anurag Basu had committed to make a film based on him, only to back out without even informing him. Reflecting on it, Kumar says, “I was hurt, but it has worked out for the best. I’m hopeful that this team will do more justice. I wanted my story to go in the right hands.”

Television actress Mrunal Thakur will be seen opposite Hrithik in this film.
