As Irrfan Khan sends fans into tizzy with revelation of suffering from “rare disease”, Blackmail director opens up on collaborating with actor

Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan sent shockwaves in the industry when he opened up about contracting “a rare disease” in a post on his Twitter account yesterday. He wrote, “Sometimes, you wake up with a jolt with life shaking you up. The last fifteen days, my life has been a suspense story. Little had I known that my search for rare stories would make me find a rare disease. I have never given up and have always fought for my choices and always will. My family and friends are with me… In trying times, please don’t speculate as I will myself share with you my story within a week — ten days, when the further investigations come with a conclusive diagnosis. Till then, wish the best for me.” (sic)

Though Abhinay Deo, director of Khan’s upcoming film Blackmail, admitted that the tweet left him stunned, he emphasised that it was time to stand by the actor’s side.

“I read his message on Twitter and it was shocking to find out about this health. He never showed any signs of illness while we were shooting for Blackmail, nor did he mention anything about it. I am sure the doctors are doing their best and providing necessary treatment. I haven’t called him because he and his family are taking care of the situation, and during such a time, they need their privacy,” said Deo.

That Khan was under the weather was revealed a fortnight ago when Vishal Bhardwaj announced that he was postponing his project based on gangster Sapna Didi owing to his lead actors’ health problems. Khan was said to be suffering from jaundice at the time. However, things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse since then.

Concerned about Khan’s health, Deo said they are open to postponing Blackmail’s release, should the need arise. “As of now, the film is going to release as per schedule on April 6. It all depends on what news comes from Irrfan and his doctors’ end. Then we can take a call and defer the release if needed.”

Lauding him for opening up about his ailment on a public platform, the director added, “It’s commendable of him to come out on a public forum and speak about what he is going through, as this will put an end to speculations that may have started.”

It is the untimely death of veteran actress Sridevi that has taken the entire nation and her family by a storm. She is survived by husband Boney Kapoor and two daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor. The family is going through the hardest phase and it’s their survival that is affected by an irreplaceable loss. However, it’s Boney’s children, Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor, who have stood rock-solid beside their father and half-sisters, Janhvi and Khushi in this trying time.

On Sunday, Anshula Kapoor posted a message on her Instagram account, which was appreciated by hers and Arjun’s followers but an ardent Arjun Kapoor fan passed comments against Janhvi and Khushi. The post read, “No matter how chaotic it is, wildflowers still spring up in the middle of nowhere.”

Anshula immediately took charge and shut the troll by asking not to abuse her sisters. She also deleted the comment written by the troll. She also wrote, “Hi, I’m requesting you to refrain from using abusive language especially towards my sisters, I do not appreciate it & have therefore deleted ur comments. While I am grateful for your passion & love for bhai & me, just a small correction – I was never working outside India. Let’s please spread joy & good vibes. Thank you for the love (sic).”

In an emotional note penned by Boney after the loss, he thanked Arjun and Anshula for being his “pillars”. Arjun, in fact, went to Dubai to bring Sridevi’s mortal remains and was beside with Janhvi and Khushi throughout the last rites.

Sridevi breathed her last in Dubai on March 24. The death certificate claims that she died of “accidental drowning” in the bathtub of her hotel room. The legendary actress was cremated with complete state honours on February 28.

From the film world to a podcast show, judging television non-fiction entertainers to running a marathon – Neha Dhupia is doing it all

Neha Dhupia

From the film world to a podcast show, judging television non-fiction entertainers to running a marathon — Neha Dhupia is doing it all. The actress and former beauty queen says entering the film industry was an adventurous step she took around 20 years ago, but staying relevant during all these years has been quite a task. Neha, who made her screen debut with a Malayalam movie in 1994, and forayed into Bollywood with “Qayamat: City Under Threat” in 2003, has been doing non-fictional shows like “MTV Roadies – Roadies Xtreme”, podcast “#NoFilterNeha” and other chat shows, apart from movie projects of late.

She told IANS: “There are so many TV shows that go off air within three months of their beginning. MTV Roadies is one of the adventures TV shows that has earned the credibility of 15 years from its audience. And I am the only female judge on the show. “I earned the show because of my body of work. Staying relevant for 20 years is challenging.”

As for adventures in her own life, she said: “I think the most adventurous thing that I have done in my life is to become part of the Indian cinema industry, being a complete outsider. So today, when I am getting an offer of one of the longest-running youth show on Indian television, it is purely a by-product of my credible work in the industry.
“I have enough and more stories to share. At the same time, I have a lot of gratitude for what I have got.”

Neha actively participated in the Mumbai Marathon and is also associated with charitable social work. As for her film career, she featured in a supporting role in “Tumhari Sulu” last year and, this year, two films are in the pipeline for her. “I have signed Pradeep Sarkar’s upcoming ‘Eela’ where I am sharing screen space with Kajol. That apart, I have acted in a short film directed by Karan Johar. It is part of the anthology film ‘Bombay Talkies 2’,” she said.

“Roadies”, where she is one of the “gang leaders”, keeps her kicked. She began her association with the show in 2016, and its new season is set in the northeast. “This show reflects the competitive side of my personality. I have come across many youngsters in the show and some of their stories are really heart-touching. The show is an honest space because everything is real here, people and their stories,” said Neha. Asked if she also wants to explore the fiction space on TV, Neha said: “No, I won’t be able to commit myself to a fictional show. That is a huge time-consuming commitment.”

After a two-year break since her last outing in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Shilpa Rao is back with Phir Kya Hai Gum from Hichki

Rao

Her deep, husky voice can lend itself beautifully to any song — from the sensuous Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, 2016) to the heart-wrenching Manmarziyan (Lootera, 2013). After a two-year break since her last outing in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Shilpa Rao is back with Phir Kya Hai Gum from Hichki.

Ask her what made her give a nod to the track and Rao says Rani Mukerji’s Naina, who suffers from Tourette syndrome in the film, inspired her. “Since the film was already shot, I saw Rani’s struggle with the speech disorder and how people behaved with her. The song showcases how she gathers her inner strength and fights back after feeling rejected. It’s an inspirational song, which highlights that you can achieve anything if you put in your heart into it,” says Rao.

Having collaborated for the first time with composer Jasleen Royal, the singer says it’s a joy to work with an artiste who is as dedicated as her. “She functions like an indie musician. I love her integrity. She is particular about the pronunciation of each word. She takes a lot of time to record, but the fact that she is particular about small things makes her a perfectionist.”

When the whole world, specially the social networking platforms, were buzzing with love posts and pictures, actor Abraam Pandey was celebrating Valentine’s Day with his pet dog Max.

When asked Abraam says,”I have Max in my life for the last one year and he is a bundle of joy to me. Right now am single and I do focus in my work a lot. I see a lot of love posts and pictures on social networking platforms but am not sure how many of them will be together next year. People are more involved in posting their romantic selfies. I feel they should focus more on the time they are spending together. In today’s time we all lead a very stressful life and one should take out time for their near and dear ones. To me my valentine day was fulfilled as Max my dog was with me the whole day. An actor’s life is not easy. Either we are shooting or we are discussing our next project, going to gym and meeting people. So whenever I get some time off I give my time to Max and he also gives me unconditional love. It is rightly said that dog is human’s best friend. I love my dog Max!”

Criticising the culture of item numbers in Hindi films, veteran actor Shabana Azmi today said they are used in movies for “titillation”

Shabana Azmi
Shabana Azmi

Criticising the culture of item numbers in Hindi films, veteran actor Shabana Azmi today said they are used in movies for “titillation”. In a panel discussion at the ongoing FICCI Frames, Azmi said item numbers involve a woman surrendering to the male gaze.

“I have strong views on item numbers because they are not part of the narrative and they’ve been put in a film for the only purpose of titillation and nothing else.

“When a girl or a leading lady says ‘it’s alright, I want to celebrate my sensuality’ I have no problem with that. I think that’s wonderful,” she said.

“But under the pretence of ‘celebrating your sensuality’ what you are actually doing is surrendering to the male gaze and objectifying yourselves because the business of cinema is of images,” the actor added.

Azmi said it is problematic when people are shown a woman’s “fragmented bits of her body, ¿heaving bosom, swinging navel, shaking hip”, as it robs her whole autonomy.

Citing the lyrics of Salman Khan-starrer “Dabangg 2”, where Kareena Kapoor Khan danced on “Fevicol Se”, Azmi said mouthing those lines is a cause of concern.

“Please be informed, when you say ‘main tandoori murgi hu, gatka lo mujhe alcohol kay saath’ and a four-year-old girl is dancing on it, you are leading to the sexualisation of children and the parents who are enjoying it, people who are encouraging her are just as responsible.”

Drawing a parallel with Zoya Akhtar’s “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”, the actor said portions of Katrina Kaif in the film, where she wears a bikini, were gracefully shot.

“In the film, Katrina Kaif comes out of the water in a bikini, the camera doesn’t go close to her, doesn’t linger on her bosom or the droplets falling. The camera in mid (frame) sees her coming out of the water, picks up her bathrobe, wears it and you immediately accept that she is an instructor who is coming and doing her job.

“The very same shot, if the director had decided to go over, it would be objectification. So it’s the intention. There’s a difference between sensuality and objectification,” she added.

Also present at the discussion were Vani Tripathi Tikoo, CBFC member, Gayatri Yadav, president and head, Consumer Strategy & Innovation, Star India, Apurva Purohit, president, Jagran Prakashan Ltd and Tavleen Singh, political columnist and author.

Actor Aasif Sheikh is a music lover and loves listening to all kinds of tracks. However, the actor adds that old songs are his favourite

Aasif Sheikh
Aasif Sheikh

Actor Aasif Sheikh is a music lover and loves listening to all kinds of tracks. However, the actor adds that old songs are his favourite. “Earlier, there was a lot of meaning and depth in music. But today’s songs don’t have that in them. Whenever we listen to old songs even today they remain in our minds for a long time and have a long shelf life but today’s music has a very short shelf life. I like and enjoy listening to old songs rather than the latest tracks,” he says.

Ask him who are his favourite singers and he says, “My all-time favourite singers would be Kishore Da and Mohammad Rafi. I think no one can match up or even try to reach their level.”

There are a few tracks which he just loves listening to again and again. “I really enjoy listening to all types of music. There are so many songs that I love but ‘Itna Na mujhse tu pyar badha ki mein ek badal awara’ and ‘Ye duniya mil bhi jaaye to kya hain’ are really good, melodious and fantastic songs,” he says.
