“As an actor, I always wanted to experiment with various genres and thankfully in the last few years, I have got the opportunity to do so,” Riteish said in a statement. “Lai Bhaari made me believe I could attempt action drama genre and after I read the script of Mauli, I knew I was ready for my second Marathi film,” he said.

Genelia said Mauli is one of the most ambitious films produced by both of them. “With Mauli going on floors now, we will also be making a few more exciting announcements very soon,” she added.

Mauli is expected to release by this year-end.

The makers had announced the film in 2015, however, it was then slated to release in 2016.

The two-day India collection of Hollywood venture outshines that of Bollywood hits Baaghi 2, Padmaavat

Rewriting the rules of the Indian trade market, the Hollywood superhero trailer Avengers: Infinity War earned the highest two-day figure since its release in India on Friday. It outshined the collections of Bollywood biggies like Padmaavat and Baaghi 2.

With a collection of Rs 61.58 crore over two days of its release – earning Rs 31.3 crore on Friday and Rs 30.25 on Saturday – the coveted third instalment of the franchise has significantly left behind two of the highest grossing Indian films of the year so far. Tiger Shroff’s actioner and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s venture earned Rs 45.5 crore and Rs 56 crore respectively during that period. The Marvel franchise is even expected to beat the earnings of The Jungle Book (2016), which, with its lifetime earning of Rs 180 crore, has remained the highest earning Hollywood venture until now.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says hitting the Rs 200-crore mark should be no mean feat for the film. “It is smashing records. I am sure it will seamlessly enter the Rs 200-crore club.”

Baaghi 2

Mehra acknowledges that not all international releases can enjoy the kind of attention that Marvel’s latest offering does. But, he points out that the film has earned this amount by releasing in a mere 2,000 screens. “When compared to the average screens that a Salman Khan or Aamir Khan film releases in [averaged at about 4,000 screens], this one has done well.”

Echoing a similar thought, distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi says, “The film is not only ruling the world, but is creating fireworks in the domestic market.”

The Simpson focuses on a family of five – Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie – and their animated antics in the fictional town of Springfield

The Simpsons

The Simpsons has become the longest-running scripted show in primetime American television history after airing its record-breaking 636th episode. The episode was aired on Sunday, surpassing a record last set by Gunsmoke, reported Fox News.

Gunsmoke started on radio in 1952 and eventually became a TV series that ran for 635 episodes from 1955 to 1975. The Simpson focuses on a family of five – Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie – and their animated antics in the fictional town of Springfield. In true Simpsons fashion, the show took aim at Gunsmoke — literally — in a gunfight battle between baby Maggie and Dillon at the end of last week’s show. At the end of that episode, Homer told the children that their series was about to pass “Gunsmoke”.

The Simpsons has won 32 Emmy Awards, 34 Annie Awards and a 2016 People’s Choice Award, according to the show’s website. It was the first animated series to win a Peabody Award, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012 for the theatrical short The Longest Daycare. The show has been in news of late after it raked up a controvsery over stereotyping of Indians in America’s popular culture.

It featured a South Asian character called Apu, who has had to grapple with the troubling stereotype of a convenience store clerk with an exaggerated, fake Indian accent since the show’s existence. The documentary The Problem With Apu touched upon how The Simpsons damaged the South Asian caricature. The makers of the latter show have since addressed the controversy.

Producer-author and entrepreneur Twinkle Khanna believes in taking legal action instead of retaliating with “violent threat” online. “As a society do we really think it’s all right to threaten a woman with bodily harm for trying to raise funds for a charity by auctioning a uniform used in a movie, a piece of film memorabilia. I will not retaliate with violent threats but by taking legal action,” Twinkle replied to a troll on Sunday.

Twinkle Khanna commented on Twitter after being trolled for auctioning National-Award winning actor Akshay Kumar’s naval uniform from the film “Rustom”. The period thriller is based on the real life incident of Naval officer K.M. Nanavati and businessman Prem Ahuja.

The troller said: “You touch our honour and we will give you a bloody nose.”

The proceedings of the bid will support the cause of animal welfare and rescue.

He feels a role like Bharath is not just rare, it is also a privilege to play such a powerful politically pertinent part

Mahesh Babu
Mahesh Babu

Telugu cinema superstar Mahesh Babu is ecstatic about his new release “Bharath Ane Nenu”, which is said to be the fastest money spinner of Telugu cinema, crossing the Rs 125 crore mark. “We knew we had a terrific film on our hands as Siva garu (director Koratala Siva) is a great storyteller. But one never knows which way the wind blows. It’s always the audience which gives the final verdict, and it’s truly overwhelming and a big thank you to all who have unanimously loved our film. It’s a very proud moment for me,” said Mahesh.

He feels a role like Bharath is not just rare, it is also a privilege to play such a powerful politically pertinent part. “It is very rare for actors to get such powerful films. The characterization of Bharath is my best till date. I will always be grateful to my director Shiva garu for conceiving this part for me.”

Mahesh says he is game for a sequel to “Bharath Ane Nenu”. “To be honest, we had content to do a five-hour film. But since we had to make it one film, we edited the content down to less than three hours. But I would love to do a sequel, if Siva Sir agrees,” said the star.

The “Lincoln” filmmaker and Williams became close after they worked together on 1991’s “Hook” and when Spielberg took on the emotional task of directing “Schindler’s List” which was about German businessman Oskar Schindler

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg credits late actor Robin Williams for helping him get through the “trauma” of filming “Schindler’s List”. The “Lincoln” filmmaker and Williams became close after they worked together on 1991’s “Hook” and when Spielberg took on the emotional task of directing “Schindler’s List” which was about German businessman Oskar Schindler, who is credited with saving 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust, Williams was there to comfort his friend by performing stand-up over the phone, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“Robin called me,” Spielberg said at the Tribeca Film Festival’s 25th-anniversary screening of the film on Thursday. “Robin knew what I was going through. Once a week he called me on schedule. He knew exactly what time it was in Poland, what time it was in San Francisco… and he would do 15 minutes of stand-up on the phone, and I would laugh hysterically because I had to release so much,” said Spielberg.

“The way Robin is on the telephone, he would always hang up on the loudest, best laugh you’d give him. He’d never say goodbye, just hang up on the biggest laugh,” he added. The emotionally-draining process of directing the movie paid off for Spielberg when he brought home Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, but he didn’t feel like he could celebrate.

“That night wasn’t really a celebration at all. I don’t feel this movie is a celebration. The subject matter and the impact the film had on all of us… took sort of the celebration out of that,” he said. “It was wonderful to win, but at the same time I just remember how moved I was when Branko Lustig, our co-producer, showed the world that he was in Auschwitz, too, and had numbers on his arms,” he added.

His forthcoming film, the intense drama “Omerta” that releases on May 4, traces the life of British-Pakistani terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh. Is it a biopic?

Hansal Mehta
Hansal Mehta

Whether it is “Shahid”, “Aligarh”, “Simran”, “Bose: Dead/Alive” or the upcoming “Omerta”, National Award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta seems to have found his space in telling stories that are based on real life characters or incidents. He attempts to express his “individual voice” through these narratives.

“I am glad if people also find such stories interesting, as I do. But it is not conscious. I have my individual voice and that reflects in my films. Not necessarily everything translates into acceptance, but I try to maintain my voice in the stories that I tell,” Mehta told IANS in an interview. His forthcoming film, the intense drama “Omerta” that releases on May 4, traces the life of British-Pakistani terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh. Is it a biopic?

“Yes, it is an unauthorised biopic. You can say that,” the filmmaker said with a smile. Given that “Omerta” tells the tale of a man who was involved in terror attacks in recent history, including the Mumbai terror strike and the brutal beheading of American journalist Daniel Pearl – and possibly the 9/11 attacks — it is understood that the character will be dark. Nobody is a born terrorist. And so, the question arises: Has Mehta tried to humanise Omar Saeed Sheikh? “Being evil and negative is (a) human characteristic that we all have somewhere or the other. But we are not brainwashed like Omar. What Omar is doing is something that he strongly believes in and his ideology has its own logic. “The reason why the story of Omar scares us is because he is so real. He is a murderer, he is evil; and (if) such a man… comes in front of you, it would be spine-chilling. So we kept it that real… He doesn’t dance or eat like a don… things that we get to see in regular Hindi films. All his actions are coming from a certain conviction,” Mehta explained.

The film premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and received a good response. Asked if the theatrical release and box office numbers worry him, Mehta said: “Yes, we have been travelling with the film since last September and everywhere people are talking about the impact that the story is creating in the minds of the audience. “I just hope that the way the international audience has engaged with the story, our Indian audience feels the same.” “Honestly, when people talk to me about box office numbers, my first and most important concern is to recover the money. Once that is done, the film will live its own life in the theatre. The audience will do that for us. But I want the cost of the film, marketing, everything that is invested should be recovered from the theatrical release,” said Mehta. Starting his career in television, Mehta made his debut as a film director with “Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!”.

His movie “Shahid” bagged him a National Award for Best Direction. It is interesting to observe how actor Rajkummar Rao, who played the protagonist in “Shahid” and now features as the terrorist in “Omerta”, has found a new dimension in his career after collaborating with Mehta. “Raj is evolving with each film and we can all see that. But I noticed how involved he is with each of the characters he plays. I remember how he was trying to pick up the Malayalam accent to play Deepu Sebastian (for the film ‘Aligarh’). Since Omar Sheikh is a very dark character, I think he went through a certain emotional transformation that we can see in his performance.

“There was a certain aggression that I noticed in him even when the camera was not rolling. That’s Raj for you,” said the director of his actor. The filmmaker, however, said that when he developed the script of “Omerta”, Rajkummar was not on his mind. “I wanted to make the film in 2007. So, basically, the story has lived with me for the last so many years. At that time, no one was interested in making this film, and I did not know Raj back then. In those years, people did not have much faith in me because of the kind of films that I was making. “However, I think everything has its own time. Raj came into my life during ‘Shahid’ and then he enabled me to make this film,” said Mehta, who is all set to do another film with the actor.

An unspoken hierarchy on the sets of a mainstream film is not something actress Richa Chadha is fond of. Having worked in both mainstream cinema and projects with theatre artistes, Richa pointed at the basic difference between the two

An unspoken hierarchy on the sets of a mainstream film is not something actress Richa Chadha is fond of. Having worked in both mainstream cinema and projects with theatre artistes, Richa pointed at the basic difference between the two.

“Working in mainstream is somewhat stressful, but not in exact sense. It’s a very different experience… There is an unspoken hierarchy in a mainstream film, that I am not fond of,” Richa Chadha told IANS here after she wrapped up the shoot of “Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui”.

The film’s ensemble cast includes actors as talented as Pankaj Tripathi, Saurabh Shukla, Vinay Pathak, Divya Dutta, Manoj Pahwa and Pavan Malhotra. Richa says even if she is on the top of that hierarchy, it makes her uncomfortable.

“Even if I am at the top of a hierarchy, I don’t like it. Because it unknowingly distances yourself from other people working on the project. For example, there are five actors and all of them are equally commercially viable and have equal experience… Just because my manager says, ‘Richa ko kuch alag do, alag van mil jaye (Give Richa a separate vanity van)’, so when I will sit and eat food with them, I will feel weird,” she said.

During the shoot of “Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui”, the experience was different. All the actors, who have a lot of experience, stayed together till its wrap up. And they also helped junior artistes in giving the best shot.

“Suppose we are doing a scene… Like, while shooting ‘Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui’, we have had a few junior artistes in Lucknow. They are not trained actors, so they do not know mark, light, how to put the mic, and the basics. But we are sitting and helping, coming together… If there is a hierarchy, then it won’t be the same… They won’t be able to open up.

“The pressure on that artiste is in fact much more because he/she has to prove himself/herself in just those two days. So, why make that difference or bring it in the first place? If it is there, it really pinches the person on the other side.

“If you are doing a comedy, you have to be comfortable enough with each other to have that camaraderie. Jokes happen between friends, right?” added the “Daas Dev” actress.

“Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui” is a political satire, Co-produced by Sony Pictures Networks Productions and Anubhav Sinha. Its release date is yet to be announced.
