padmaIf you thought you had seen onscreen opulence at its Bollywood best with Bajirao Mastani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has managed to up the ante in a way that only he can. In Padmavati, he brings together Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh once again. Deepika features in the title role as Rani Padmavati and Ranveer as Sultan Alauddin Khilji, along with Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh, the ruler of Mewar.

This time it is designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula who have woven textile magic for this drama based in the 14th century. Only their first outing as designers for a Bollywood film, their personal obsession with royal style led them to this opportunity. “We had done a show called Maharaja and Co at a fashion week, and have also worked with a lot of royal families of the country including those from Jaipur, Rampur, Baroda, Kishangarh and Gondal. We had the privilege to look into their wardrobes and style them for editorial shoots for various magazines for many years,” says Harpreet. They took their collection of antique and vintage textile samples for their first meeting with Bhansali and that is how it all began.

It is Rimple and Harpreet Narula’s first outing as designers for a Bollywood film and their personal obsession with royal style is what led them to this opportunity

From discovering the magic of vegetable dyes and re-discovering lost styles of block printing to finding inspiration in museums and murals, the designers spent months travelling and researching. “The actual textile development had to be done during the winter months as the humidity during monsoon affects the quality of the printing. We were working against the clock to get everything ready and would sometimes wonder that if we put that motif, colour or detail into it would anyone even notice? But when we would bring the garment to Mr Bhansali, I would be surprised that he would not just notice but also identify it,” says Rimple.

We spoke to the designers and asked them to detail what went behind creating some of the looks in the movie. Edited excerpts from an interview:

Deepika Padukone’s Ghaghra In Ghoomar
null

“The ghaghra for this song has 80 kalis so that it could look bigger while twirling for the traditional dance. Because of the weather conditions in the region, mulmuls and cottons were favoured over silks, and we used vegetable dyes for everything. We visited various forts and havelis in Bundi, Kota and Udaipur and carefully studied the murals and frescoes for references. The main motifs that we used – the lady with a parrot, the tree of life, the sun and the moon, the lion and the lotus have deep historical symbolism entrenched in the Rajput culture.

The embroideries were done at different craft clusters spread across Rajasthan, over a period of two months. The innermost layer of the ghaghra has a special gota lafa that we got artisans from Nyla near Jaipur to weave, the brocades were specially commissioned to master weavers after a careful study of old samples from Aurangabad and Benaras that have been archived at the Calico and Jaipur museums. For the odhna, which is much wider than the dupatta we wear today, we used Kota cotton and then got a leheriya print developed on it that came from a 16th century textile sample we saw at the Victoria and Albert museum. It was further embellished with Raato embroidery, which involves couching of gold metal flat wire with a red silk floss thread.”

Shahid Kapoor’s Royal Court Look
null
“Mr Bhansali did not want us to follow any vague generalisations of costumes that have been depicted in cinema till now, but create garments for Shahid’s character that also expressed the emotional turmoil and complexities the character undergoes. Shahid has an inherent regal carriage and body language and when he donned the angrakhas and robes, it was as if Maharawal Ratan Singh was brought to life in front of our eyes.

We had to get the various shades and tones of royal dressing right. The Calico Museum has a number of examples. For the court looks, we got specialist weavers to develop the fabrics that are gilded with real metal wires. A lot of the embroidery and motif references came not only from old clothing samples we could get our hands on, but also vintage textiles in the form of manuscript holders, canopies, wall hangings and bichhonas.

The formal court looks have ornate turbans with gold leaf and foil printing layered over meticulously done leheriya printing in 24 colours, which were derived and replicated from actual samples of vintage turbans archived at the Victoria and Albert Museum. A specialist from Mewar, who has worked with various current day royals, was hired to drape the turbans.”

Ranveer Singh’s Rugged Look
null

“We wanted to create the look of an antagonist whom audiences would remember for a long time to come. Given Khilji’s nomadic Turkish origins, we did a lot of research on the costumes and textiles of the belt, right from Afghanistan to Kazakhistan to the central Asia belt around Turkey.

According to the brief by Mr Bhansali, we had to create costumes that bring out an aura of power and brutality in Ranveer. Elaborate patterning and embellishment on the shoulders and arms were used to achieve the desired effect. Khilji’s color palette is dark and ominous given his tribal invader background and we have used very robust nomadic elements layered with different textures and sturdy fabrics to achieve a look that goes with the character’s story arc through the film – from a young warrior to the Sultan of India who is besotted by Rani Padmavati’s beauty.

Back then these nomadic tribes used iridescent beetle wings and embroidered them along with metal zari and badla wires to give a bejeweled look to the garments. We got special sequins developed to recreate the beauty of this particular embellishment.”

DippyPadmavatA Meerut resident from the Kshatriya community on Thursday announced a bounty of Rs 5 crore on the heads of film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actor Deepika Padukone for “wrongfully portraying” queen Padmini in their coming film ‘Padmavati’. Thakur Abhishek Som of Sardhana Chaubisi, who claimed affiliation to the Samajwadi Party, said the Kshatriya community will not tolerate wrongful portrayal of the queen and meddling with its rich heritage

Claiming that his political affiliations had nothing to do with his stand, Som warned that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not be able to save the Bollywood filmmaker and the actor. Demanding a ban on the movie, Som told the media that it would be better if Deepika Padukone left the country or else her head will be chopped off.

“I am making this declaration on behalf of the Kshatriya Samaj,” he said. He accused Bhansali of lacking knowledge about history and that he was only interested in Box Office profits even if it meant meddling with history. Som said he was ready to face the consequence of his stand on the issue.

TigerZindhaHaiAfter wowing their fans with Mashallah in Ek Tha Tiger five years ago, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif have reunited for another dance number in their upcoming release, Tiger Zinda Hai. The duo is set to show their swag in Swag Se Swagat, a dance number that will release next week. Besides being a perfect platform for Khan and Kaif to display their crackling chemistry, the high point of the song is that it features 100 dancers from four countries — Greece, France, Italy, Trinidad and Tobago.

Turns out, dancers of different nationalities were roped in for the Vaibhavi Merchant-choreographed track to drive home the point of diversity, which is the song’s underlying theme. The background dancers are trained in ballerina, hip hop and Afroancehall, each bringing their unique dance form to the song. “Swag Se Swagat is essentially about celebrating peace, love and brotherhood. So we thought why not have Salman, Katrina and dancers from all over the world,” says director Ali Abbas Zafar.

The director reveals that shooting the number in the picturesque island of Naxos in Greece was an experience in itself. The locals were excited at the prospect of having an Indian project being shot in their hometown. “The entire town found out that a big Bollywood film was being filmed in their home turf. Everyone would turn up to check the shoot out. When we would play the song during the takes, the locals too would be dancing on their rooftops, balconies and alleys,” laughs Zafar.

SRK_mamtaA gallant act on the part of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee moved megastar Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) so much that he touched her feet.

A video clip of that moment is being widely viewed on social media, which is commending Banerjee for her “true class”, among other things. In the undated video, Banerjee can be seen dropping the star at Kolkata airport in her humble Hyundai Santro car.

Upon reaching the airport, Banerjee is seen getting out of the car and opening the door for SRK. This no-airs attitude on the part of a state chief minister moved the megastar so much that he spontaneously bows down and touches Banerjee’s feet.

SRK, who has several luxury cars in his possession, was seated in the back (as Didi always sits next to driver in the front) of the humble hatchback, which, incidentally, he’s been endorsing for the past 19 years.

SRK, who is also brand ambassador of Bengal, was in Kolkata to inaugurate 23rd Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) last Friday.

It is no secret that King Khan shares a special bond with Mamata. The TMC president is often seen attending matches of Kolkata Knight Riders, of which the 52-year-old actor is the owner. She also sends him a ‘rakhi’ every year on Raksha Bandhan.

SRK recently tweeted a photo of him with the Bengal CM from KIFF where the warmth between the two was on full display.

deepikaAs the clouds of uncertainty loom large over the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film ‘Padmavati’, the Maharashtra government is trying its bit to provide some relief. Amid several severe threats of burning down the movie theatres to beheading Deepika Padukone, the Maharashtra government has assured to provide security to all theatres screening ‘Padmavati’.

Minister of State for Home (Urban) Ranjit Patil told the media that they will take all measures to ensure security and are keeping a close watch to prevent any untoward incident. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had already provided a precautionary security cover to Bhansali who is facing death threats for a while now.

Similarly After the Rajasthan-based fringe group Rajput Karni Sena threatened to chop off the film’s lead actress Deepika Padukone’s nose, special security has been provided to her by the Mumbai Police.

In a video released, a leader of the group said, “Rajputs never raise a hand on women but if need be, we will do to Deepika what Lakshmana did to Shrupnakha.” Not just this, the group also called for a bandh across India on December 1, 2017 – the day Padmavati is slated to hit the screens.

For the record, the opposing groups had met government representatives on the issue for discussion. Ram Kadam, BJP legislator from Mumbai, who is also the president of the Film Studios Setting and Allied Mazdoor Sangh, is opposing the film and has refused to work with Bhansali in future. Rajput Karni Sena has also announced nationwide bandh on December 1, the release date of ‘Padmavati.’

Padmavati first ran into trouble when Bhansali was physically assaulted by some members of the Rajput Karni Sena on the sets in Jaipur in February this year. Ever since then, the fringe group has been issuing threats that they won’t let the film release. The furore against the film has been rising by the day and is at its peak currently when it is just two weeks away from its release.

Padmavati is based on the legend of Rani Padmini of Chittor and the fanatic groups believe that the film features a romantic sequence between the queen and the Mughal emperor Alauddin Khilji. While Bhansali has invariably denied these allegations, these groups refuse to believe it.

Today, under immense pressure, Bhansali has agreed to show the film to the members of the Rajput Karni Sena.
Padmavati, bankrolled by Bhansali Productions, features Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in important roles besides Deepika.

aamirAamir Khan is one of the most popular and influential Bollywood actors in India today. He became a star of Hindi cinema in the 1980s, and his greatest commercial successes have been the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time.

In 2012, Khan’s career took an unexpected turn.

Together with a childhood friend, he created a TV series called Satyamev Jayate (Truth only prevails) which became the first prime-time TV show in India to expose the country’s most critical social issues – from rape to female foeticide and dowry killings.

Khan was used to portraying macho men on a quest for vengeance and belongs to an industry accused of denigrating women and encouraging sexual violence.

But now, the 52-year-old actor with Peter Pan charm risks his career by challenging men to re-examine their attitudes and behaviour towards women, confronting the spiralling wave of gender-based violence in India and defying age-old stereotypes.

The Snake Charmer follows Khan on a journey through India’s TV and Bollywood industry, as he attempts to change the way Indians perceive and treat women.

From the set of Satyamev Jayate, the film follows Khan backstage to his new Bollywood blockbuster Dangal.

Khan’s quest ultimately opens a window into a country in crisis and the changes it is undergoing.

janhvi-ishaan-mergeRegarded as the King of Nepotism – Karan Johar yesterday launched two star kids – Sridevi’s daughter Jahnavi Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor’s brother Ishaan Khattar in Marathi film Sairat’s Hindi remake – Dhadak.

Dhadak touts with an urban setting and is a much lighter attempt as compared to the original is basically Karan’s idea for the film’s Hindi adaption. As Karan is popularly known for launching star kids, this time the filmmaker received Nepotism backlash from the audience after he made an official announcement of Jahnavi and Ishaan’s debut.

Targeting Karan with the arrow of Nepotism, some of the comments read:

The comments are shocking as the film’s trailer is yet to be unleashed – this points out the seriousness of hatred towards Nepotism among the audience. This could be a worry for Karan and the two stars as receiving such not so positive response for the posters are definitely not a good start for the film.

Anyway, we can be judgemental only on 6th July 2018 as this is when the film is scheduled to hit the silver screen. We wonder what Karan Johar has to say about these comments.

What do you guys think? Is it too early to judge the newcomers and do you agree with the trolls or do you have some other opinion? Tell us in the comment section below.
