Paresh Rawal can turn any character into gold. The iconic actor will be soon getting into the shoes of another legend – Sunil Dutt, in one of the 2018’s most awaited films, Sanju. The Sanjay Dutt biopic, starring Ranbir Kapoor in the titular role has been directed by Rajkumar Hirani and Rawal plays Dutt senior. While fans are raving about the perfect casting of the film, Rawal has a different story to tell about what unfolded when he was offered the much-anticipated role.
In an exclusive chat with indianexpres.com, Paresh Rawal tells us how it was no less than a divine intervention that he was approached to play Sunil Dutt’s part.
“On May 25, 2005, I was shooting for a movie and I called up home to say that I will be late today. And during the shooting, we got to know that Dutt Sahab (Sunil Dutt) has passed away, so I called up my wife and said I will come a bit late because Dutt Sahab has passed away and I am going to his house. She then told me that there is a letter for you from him (Sunil Dutt). I asked her what the letter was and she said it is for wishing you a happy birthday. I told her that my birthday is on May 30, which is five days away but she said the letter is for you and she even read it to me. I was so surprised. Why would Dutt Sahab send me a birthday letter five days before my birthday? And we have never exchanged any holiday greetings in the past – be it Diwali or Christmas – so why would he write to me?,” Rawal shared.
An equally surprised Paresh Rawal further added, “On January 3, 2017, I asked my wife to take out a couple of my documents as I was going to meet Rajkumar Hirani. I told her I will pick up those documents when I come back. When I was sitting with Rajkumar Hirani, my wife called me and said that along with the documents, that letter from Sunil Dutt Sahab was also there. She asked me what I wanted to do about it? And I was stunned as I was narrated the part of Sunil Dutt for the movie.”
Suggesting that it was nothing less than a ‘divine intervention’ of sorts, Rawal said, “See, usually you don’t keep birthday cards for 12 years, you discard them. You forget about them, but that letter was there with all my important documents and it was again found on the same day Rajkumar Hirani narrated the Sanju role to me. It is like a divine intervention. I showed that letter to Rajkumar Hirani later.”
Paresh Rawal and Sunil Dutt starred in Rajkumar Kohli’s Virodhi, though they did not share screen space.
Sanju also stars Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Vicky Kaushal, Manisha Koirala and Boman Irani. It is set to release on June 29.

So, when you have the nerve to make callous comments, you also need to be ready for the following backlash as well. After all, what goes around comes around!

Yes, to all the Bhaijaan fans out there, I know the poor actor is always dragged into controversies. He is never at fault. He is as innocent as a kid. He is a 52-year-old man-child.
Maintaining his streak of imprudent actions, this time the multi-talented (when it comes to making a fool of himself) Salman Khan fat-shamed a 42-year-old woman on a dance reality show.
The actor publicly made fun of Meenal Dhapre’s weight not just once but multiple times. However, the contestant was so stunned to see her idol Madhuri Dixit Nene before her, that she was oblivious to Salman’s comments. But his harsh remarks did catch everyone else’s attention.

It all happened when Meenal requested a hug from Madhuri before her performance. Madhuri obliged and the excited contestant came running when Salman said: “araam araam se, kahin stage na toot jaaye” (Careful, the stage might just break). Besides the appalling comment, it was also shocking to see how all the other celebrities sitting there let this slide as a joke.

And that wasn’t it. Looking at Madhuri and Meenal talking, Salman asked if they knew each other. To which the contestant replied that she comes from a ‘chhota shahar’ (small town). And since he is the representative of ‘Being Human’, he remarked how she could fit in there? Ironic isn’t it?

Salman honestly, what the hell is wrong with you and your so-called comic sense?
After hugging Madhuri, Meenal promptly lost her balance and fell. We all probably would as well, if we ever saw our idols right before us.
Later on, Meenal gave an entertaining performance on Mera Piya Ghar Aaya from ‘Yaarana’. All the while, Salman stood close to the stage and when she concluded her performance he said, “main wahan isliye khada tha ki aap kahin phir se tappa khaaker gir gaye toh?”
He straight away compared her to a ball. How ignorant were the celebrities and the audience, who did not feel the need to call out Salman for his insolent and disrespectful behaviour?
If not for anything, just respect the fact that she can dance and you suck at that job literally. You might have found this funny, but your sense of humour is as low as your IQ.
Dear Bhaijaan, I know you can get away with anything, but how about showing some responsibility, as millions of people look up to you? Or let me guess, you don’t really know what fat-shaming actually means. If that is the case, then don’t worry, there are ways to enlighten people like you.

There are very few actors in Bollywood, who put their heart and soul into playing a character and nailing the role with near perfection. Not many know this but Rawal and Sunil Dutt have worked together in Rajkumar Kohli’s ‘Virodhi’, even though they never shared any screen time together.
After hearing this story, it feels like Rawal was meant to play this role and honestly, after getting a glimpse of his performance in the trailer, we couldn’t agree more.

When you have the brains of creative geniuses like Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap calling the shots for a web series, you know your expectations are already pretty high. The final trailer of ‘Sacred Games’ dropped and it absolutely looks like a brilliantly done show.
The series stars Saif Ali Khan as the fierce cop who is in a cat-mouse chase with the villain and the stellar actor, Nawazuddin.

The series also stars Radhika Apte who joins hands with Saif in the criminal chase game. The show touches the theme of the villain issuing a warning to the good cop that his Mumbai city is in danger. What follows is some gripping action and a wonderfully directed movie.
