Okay. So I have seen ‘Black Panther’ twice in one week and am STILL tripping over how badass and afro-tastic the entire movie was! So forgive me for acting like an insane fangirl in certain parts of this article.

Now before we jump into it, my very good friend Tom Hiddleston has a lovely message for you all, so please read it first & proceed with caution.

If I see one whining moron saying “you should have warned us” in the comment section after this, then I swear to Bast. Honestly, if you STILL have not seen this movie, then I’m judging y’all so damn hard.

Now, ‘Lion King’ is one of the first Disney movies I ever saw. And mind you, I was in 3rd grade or something and this was back in 1997, so popping a cassette into a VCR and watching a movie on the telly was a pretty damn big deal for a kid at the time.

Anyway, the second I heard the Zulu chant in the ‘Circle of Life’, I remember every hair on my body was on its end. A teeny tiny sneezing Simba walked into my heart with his widdle baby paws & when Rafiki just lifted him like that over Pride Rock….oh God…

Simba’s relation with his majestic and handsome AF dad Mufasa was something I totally related too. Me and my old man share the same playful, love-filled bond and he always helps me in a tight spot. So you can imagine how my world crashed when Mufasa died horribly like that in a stampede by a herd of stupid Wildebeests, all because of *&%**#@$ Scar. But, what killed me the most is what happened next…

Guys, I’m tearing up right now…

What the hell, make it stop!

Now, remember the scene back from ‘Civil War’ when T’Challa cradled his dead father in his arms, after the attack on the UN? See any similarities?

Man the parallels are too much looking back at the death of T’Challa’s father on Civil War & Mufasa on Lion King. 😭#BlackPanther pic.twitter.com/piskpDvSed

— UrbanNoize2 (@UrbanNoize2) October 16, 2017

Simba and Mufasa shared the ultimate father-son relationship even after his death. So much so, that during a particularly low point in his life, Simba even spoke to Mufasa/Mufasa’s spirit thanks to Rafiki.

So, when a similar scene popped up in ‘Black Panther’ not once, but twice, it was such a throwback. A newly crowned T’Challa, after a Wakandan ritual, is transported to the ancestral planes with the help of his uncle Zuri, where he meets his father (who by the way transforms him from a panther into a human! (Yaas).

“Remember who you are.” The Black Panther and Lion King parallel. Wow. #BlackPanther pic.twitter.com/Zn3VPa2YS6

— UrbanNoize2 (@UrbanNoize2) October 16, 2017

They have a tender moment where T’Challa breaks down saying how he misses his father. Also, the music at that moment was so similar to the one from ‘Lion King’, I couldn’t help but make the connection.

A Scene In 'Black Panther' Looked Straight Out Of 'Lion King' & The 90s Kid In Me Screamed

The next scene where I saw a striking similarity with ‘Lion King’ involved Eric Killmonger. Yes, the badass rival of the Black Panther, who also turns out to be his long lost cousin.

So after an epic battle which ends with Eric getting stabbed by T’Challa, the cousins somehow seem to make their peace and end up watching a beautiful Wakandan sunset. And the first thing that came to my mind was…

The resemblance between the two scenes was so damn uncanny that I was thrown aback. Anyway, it was a welcome rush of memories. So watch out for these parallels when you watch this movie.

Also, I’m seriously considering watching ‘Black Panther’ for a third time in the hall. WHAT? I loved it, okay? Deal with it!

Also, I’m in love with General Okoye. This woman can throw her wig at me and crack my head open with a spear aaaaaaanytime she wants…sigh!

Rani Mukerji shoots with kids over two days for Hickhi’s promotional video

Hickhi

A month after mid-day had reported that Rani Mukerji would shoot for a promotional video for the upcoming social drama, Hichki, we hear that the actor filmed for it in Worli village over the weekend. Talking to mid-day about the three-minute long video, producer Maneesh Sharma had said that it attempts to put the spotlight on “women who’ve overcome obstacles to realise their dreams”.

A source from the production says, “She [Mukerji] was excited about shooting with the kids residing in the nearby areas. She would reach ahead of the scheduled time to rehearse. She also interacted with the children every day after we wrapped up. When filming was underway, kids from the neighbouring areas would also trickle in to catch a glimpse of her. She made it a point to chat with them in between shots, even obliging them with autographs and selfies.”

Hichki sees Mukerji’s Naina, a teacher, battle all odds to live a fulfilling life despite suffering from Tourette Syndrome. An insider says that the video attempts to encourage people to overcome obstacles, just like her character does in the film. “The video sees Rani criticise social stigmas, including an obsession with fair skin, the attitude towards those with disabilities, and the lack of freedom given to women,” the source says. The video is expected to release on Saturday.

While, for the rest of the world this Monday is still going to be boring and mundane, there is one guy who is probably flying high on cloud nine and dancing with joy, with no ‘blues’ to give whatsoever. The guy in question is none other than Karan Johar, whose directorial debut ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ is making the world go crazy, even after 20 years of its release. And the Berlin Film Festival only cemented the fact for us.

If the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol-Rani Mukherjee starrer taught us anything, it is the trick of using cheesy pickup lines like a pro, and getting any girl with ‘pyaar dosti hai’ logic. Seriously, didn’t we all try this line, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai *insert our crush’s name*, tum nahi samjhoge”, on people at least once?

Well, how can we forget that this is the same movie that gave us Sana Saeed. Yes, we are talking about the hottie from ‘Student Of The Year’.

The movie also gave us one of the most epic transformation stories, which happened over an unrequited love.

The movie also gave one of the coolest Dadis of all time and even today we feel that she possibly time-travelled from the future, because she was clearly way ahead of her time. She even sneaked out with her granddaughter for a summer camp.

The movie made us realize how life is not about ‘counting dollars’ but ‘stars’, thanks to this kid, who had just one job throughout the movie and that was to look at stars.

Lastly, the movie also predicted Salman’s future for all of us that he is going to stay single.

The movie had something or the other for everyone and no matter how old we grow; we can re-watch this movie every time it pops up on our TV screens.

But, we guess it isn’t just India that’s affected by the charm of this movie. Other countries too love Bollywood as much as we do, and the magic of this iconic movie was witnessed at the Berlin Film Festivals. To pay a tribute to ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra played the title track, which was welcomed by a huge round of applause by the audience.

Honestly, there couldn’t have been a better rendition than this and we can listen to it the whole day on loop. Even Karan Johar was so impressed by it that he took to Twitter to express his joy.

Was so excited and honoured to see this!!!!! #KuchKuchHotaHai https://t.co/EKsDTSMVj1

— Karan Johar (@karanjohar) 18 February 2018

It’s impressive how after so many years, the movie still manages to flutter many a hearts and make people drown in a pool of nostalgia.

Karan Johar is currently gearing up for another kickass movie ‘Ranbhoomi’ starring varun Dhawan.

African filmmaker Idrissa Ouedraogo has died at the age of 64. Ouedraogo, from Burkina Faso, passed away on Sunday, read a statement from the National Filmmakers Guild

African filmmaker Idrissa Ouedraogo has died at the age of 64. Ouedraogo, from Burkina Faso, passed away on Sunday, read a statement from the National Filmmakers Guild. President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said that his country “has lost a filmmaker of immense talent”, noting that the director “truly contributed to turning the spotlight on Burkinabe and African cinema beyond our borders”, reports variety.com.

Ouedraogo was best known for “Tilai”, a powerful drama about family honour that won the Cannes Jury Prize in 1990. Tributes and condolences from around the African film world poured out on social media. Congolese helmer Balufu Bakupa-Kanyinda described his “deep sadness” at the passing of a man affectionately known as “the teacher”, adding that “the maestro has come home, behind the screen”.

Gilles Jacob, president of the Cannes film festival at the time when Ouedraogo’s “Yaaba” and “Tilai” were selected, mourned the passing of a screen legend who “closed his eyes for good right when the sun which illuminated his body of work was setting”. In Berlin, where filmmakers were gathered on Sunday at the Berlinale Africa Hub, many shared thoughts on Ouedraogo’s life and celebrated career.

Ouedraogo’s friend and veteran fest programmer Keith Shiri called the helmer “a great and generous man, who welcomed him on his first visit to Burkina Faso in 1989, for the pan-African film festival, “Fespaco”, where Ouedraogo would become a staple in the following years. Along with his work on-screen, Ouedraogo was also a veteran of theatre, directing “The Tragedy of King Christopher” at Paris’ Comedie-Francaise.

Though he directed a short film in the 9/11 omnibus “11’9″01”, Ouedraogo had largely turned to TV work in recent years, and was thought by many to have become disillusioned with the challenges of funding the films he insisted on filming on celluloid.

Padmaavat has gone ahead to break all records to become the biggest grosser of 2018 both in India and overseas markets

Deepika Padukone

Sanjay Leela Bhansali spells magic with his films in the true sense. Known for his larger than life portrayal of cinema, the filmmaker’s stories are also one to set the cash registers ringing. Beating his previous record of ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela – Ram Leela’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’ of Rs 202 crore and Rs 358 crore respectively, ‘Padmaavat‘ has gone ahead to break all records to become the biggest grosser of 2018 both in India and overseas markets. The movie has clocked in a whopping Rs 540 crore!

Considering the lean period with no holidays or long weekends, the magnum opus has been an absolute money spinner! With both critics and audiences loving the period drama, ‘Padmaavat’ starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor, looks like it will break a few more box office myths.

Ranveer Singh, who is on a high after recording his biggest hit with this film and is receiving appreciation for his portrayal of Alauddin Khilji in the film, says box office numbers are a validation for him. “It feels amazing. As an entertainer, box office numbers are a validation that I am being able to entertain audiences and, to me, that’s everything,” says Singh. Padmaavat has earned the actor commercial and critical acclaim. The movie released on January 25.

Imagine how life would have been for a dead broke actor who positively rejected the idea of selling his power script, and wrote his own destiny to become a well known figure of all time. Steadily, ‘Rocky Balboa’ fixated us to his version of the American dream and filled our hearts with hope, belief and ambition. He broke the existing boilerplate about the modish version of Hollywood, instead, gave it an unfashioned, raw slant which many would have turned down then.

On the likes of Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, ‘Balboa’ existed to be the greatest bull artist of all time! In the lines below, read about how Sylvester Stallone ignited the ‘Rocky’ in him to become a great actor and what followed years later as his charm faded away.

Early Life Without Any Money

This Is Why Sylvester Stallone Is Known To Be One Of The Greatest Stars Of All Time© gigareel

Born in a lower middle class family, Stallone spent his early years in Manhattan and had a difficult childhood due to being partially paralyzed from the time of his birth. At times he couldn’t explain at first the reason behind his slurred speech and often faced rejection as a child. It was when he moved to Philadelphia and gained some university education, he started accepting the challenges both (physical and financial) all by his own.

At one point in his early days as an adult, when he was left with no money and a shelter, he starred in a soft core pornography feature film titled ‘The Party at Kitty and Stud’s’ and earned his first 200 dollars. But, that is not all about him. He knew he had to do more with his life and tried ways to explore it through whatever available sources he had. Then ‘Hollywood’ happened to him!

Small Beginnings In Hollywood

Right from his acceptance to go for uncredited roles in films like Pigeons (1970) as a party guest, Woody Allen’s ‘Bananas’ (1971) as a subway thug, in psychological thriller ‘Klute’ (1971) as an extra dancing in a club, and in the Jack Lemmon film ‘The Prisoner of Second Avenue’ (1975) as a youth, and later doing supporting roles in ‘Farewell’, ‘My Lovely’, ‘Capone’ and ‘Death Race 2000’, Stallone tried his hands onto every small film which could keep up his survival. By then he hardly knew that something big was waiting for him in the days that followed. A self written script about a boxer changed Stallone’s fate forever.

The Script And Its Fate

On March 24, 1975, Stallone witnessed the Muhammad Ali–Chuck Wepner fight. He later sat down for 20 long hours to write a script. After finishing the script, the challenge was to find someone who could make it into a film and take Stallone in the lead. After getting rejected by many studios, it was Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff who became interested in the script and offered Stallone US$350,000 for the rights. The actor rejected the offer and instead showed interest to be casted as the lead in the film. Post much negotiation; the producers agreed to his terms, ‘Rocky’ was born!

The Academy Awards 1977

The film instantly became a huge hit and connected to masses. “If ever a recent offbeat film project had some high-horsepower sponsorship, it’s ‘Rocky’” wrote Variety about the film. The movie received both critical acclaim and a good viewership which further paved way for ten Academy nominations. The 49th Academy Awards (1977) was a memorable year for Stallone and his film, ‘Rocky’ defeated the highly lauded ‘All The President’s Men’ and took away the Oscar for Best Film, Best Director and Best Editing.

Glorious Years In Hollywood

The success of ‘Rocky’ was mammoth and made Stallone a star to be chased. Renowned producers wanted to work with him for his avant-garde performance. However, Sylvester thought unorthodoxly and gave his first directorial debut the very next year after ‘Rocky’ was released. He went on to direct the 1978 film ‘Paradise Alley’ and later starred in ‘F.I.S.T’. In 1979 he wrote, directed and starred in ‘Rocky II’ which grossed over 200 million dollars worldwide.

When people just couldn’t get enough of his mysterious and stony image, he launched a major franchise and termed it as ‘Rambo’. After ‘First Blood’ (1982), three ‘Rambo’ sequels, ‘Rambo: First Blood Part II’ (1985), ‘Rambo III’ (1988) and ‘Rambo’ (2008), followed. Stallone’s box office success was keeping his fans happy and contented with his skills and filmography and sooner he wrote, directed, and starred in two more sequels to the series: ‘Rocky III’ (1982) and ‘Rocky IV’ (1985). These two characters of ‘Rocky’ and ‘Rambo’ have been portrayed by Stallone in a total of 11 films.

Heavy Duty Workout And Preparation For Films

This Is Why Sylvester Stallone Is Known To Be One Of The Greatest Stars Of All Time© konbini

With each film, Stallone kept a robust yet different physical appearance. His exuberant training regimen often comprised of heavy duty exercises and that too for six days a week. For ‘Rocky III’, Stallone claims to have reduced his body fat percentage to as low as 2.8%. Before the shoot of ‘Rocky IV’ and ‘Rambo II’, Stallone received tough training from former Mr. Olympia, Franco Columbu.

Unsuccessful Roles

Though most of the ‘Rambo’, ‘Rocky’ films received overall positive reviews and made Stallone a star forever, he also chose to do some offbeat roles, not suiting his personality and therefore couldn’t make him appear other than the man with a basso profundo voice. People still wanted to see more of the fighter in him and just couldn’t accept the fact that he could be someone else than the one fighting inside the ring.

Films like ‘Rhinestone’, ‘Over The Top’, ‘Angels With Dirty Faces’ and ‘Cobra’ failed at the box office and ultimately Stallone decided to rejuvenate the ‘Rocky’ franchise. ‘Rocky V’ got released, however, Stallone’s career in Hollywood started sinking, due to many flop films over a short period of time.

2006–2008: Revisiting Rocky And Rambo

This Is Why Sylvester Stallone Is Known To Be One Of The Greatest Stars Of All Time© projectcasting

Who could believe that Stallone still had something to do with the ‘Rocky’ series? In 2006, he made a comeback with ‘Rocky Balboa’ which was both a commercial and critical hit. Till date, people admire him for his power packed performance in the film and for the memorable monologue during a scene where Balboa indulges into a prompt conversation with his son, leaving the viewers teary eyed and motivated at the same time.

In 2015, Stallone reprised his role as ‘Rocky Balboa’ in a spin-off-sequel film, ‘Creed’ which earned him his first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and also his third Academy Award nomination. Other than his Hollywood roles, he also appeared in a cameo in Bollywood movie ‘Kambakkht Ishq’.

Not many of his fans know that Stallone has also been an integral part of boxing promotion and his company ‘Tiger Eye Productions’, signed world champion boxers Sean O’Grady and Aaron Pryor. Due to extremely physically demanding roles Stallone also suffered some major injuries including a broken finger, injured neck which had to be supported through a metal plate and an injured eye.

Stallone once said, “If you lead with your heart, lead with your heart, and it will carry you much further than your brains will.” Maybe, that has made him what he is today. An actor who believes his films are his life and so he does every single thing to make his films a great piece of art. From rags to riches, Stallone wrote his own life story and is an inspiration to millions of people throughout the world. There is never going to be another one like him!

Keen on making a mark in Bollywood, Maheshwari departed to make time for auditions instead. Eventually, she bagged Gurpreet Sondh’s directorial venture, which releases next month. The film also stars Mastram (2014) actor Rahul Bagga and Rajpal Yadav. “It is a romcom. We shot for it in Delhi,” she says.

In 2013, she along with Jallad, assisted Khan during the episodes he’d host over the weekend. She’d appeared for a segment called Sanduk Ka Vaar, where the star would pull out specific props from a box to chide the housemates.

While Jallad became a recurrent face in the seasons that followed, Pari went missing. But Maheshwari is glad that Khan kept her alive with his references. “It was kind of Salman sir to repeatedly remember me. He would often say, ‘Pari kidhar hai, kidhar hai Pari?’ I am grateful to him that he kept reminding the audience about my character.”

Working with Khan on the show, she says, was a “blast”. “He would crack jokes with the unit. There was never a dull moment with him. We would be in splits whenever he was around.”

Five years after her stint on Bigg Boss, Maheshwari remembers the show with fondness. “Bigg Boss was my first assignment. Although I had a small appearance, sharing the stage with Salman sir was an experience I cherished. Few can say that they made their acting debut with him. I left my hometown, Bareilly, to pursue my dream of acting. Now I hope to reach new heights,” says Maheshwari.

The actor has TV shows like Big Fame Star (2013), Do Dil Bandhey Ek Dori Se (2013), The Buddy Project and Thapki Pyaar Ki (2015), among others, to her credit. A foray into Bollywood doesn’t imply that she intends on leaving her career in television behind her. “I hope to strike a balance between the two,” she signs off.
