Seems like Oscars this year will see something very unusual. It has been a tradition at the event that previous year’s ‘Best Actor’ winner presents the ‘Best Actress’ trophy next year, while the ‘Best Actress’ presents ‘Best Actor’. But as per reports, Casey Affleck, who was honoured as the ‘Best Actor’ for his performance in ‘Manchester By the Sea’, has pulled himself out from presenting the ‘Best Actress Award’ this year, said Deadline. Sources said, he has notified the Academy he will not be attending the event.

‘Affleck did not want to become a distraction from the focus that should be on the performances of the actresses in the category and that is why he made the proactive move. He was in a no-win situation, with all the attention surrounding the #MeToo movement. The specter of Affleck presenting would have created controversy,’ the report quoted sources as saying. On that note, the actor, brother of Hollywood star Ben Affleck, was sued by two female crew members for alleged sexual harassment in 2010.

While Bollywood and television industry is still suffering in the hands of the censor board, web series, on the other hand, are going all out experimenting with everything to get a hang of what audience might like.

Keeping the conservative thoughts and the CBFC tantrums off track, the web series-makers are coming with content that might offend some but will be loved by many. Bidding adieu to the daily soap operas and ‘saas-bahu’ drama, the OTT platforms are creating and curating content that millennials can easily relate to.

2018 is full of long weekends and this Republic Day weekend, we have four interesting shows all set to stream on our gadgets.

With makers like Ekta Kapoor and Vikram Bhatt helming these series, it surely is going to be a binge-worthy weekend for entertainment buffs. From courtroom drama to thriller to military drama, we list down four shows that you should definitely watch.

neeraj pandey

Actor Rajesh Tailang says he loved working with filmmaker Neeraj Pandey in “Aiyaary”, and hopes to collaborate with him again.

“I have always been a fan of Neerajji. I loved his films like ‘A Wednesday’ and ‘Special 26’. He is very precise and to the point. He knows what exactly he wants out of you and helps you to achieve that in a very friendly manner,” Rajesh said in a statement.

“He establishes each of his characters beautifully. It was really great to be working with such a great director and human being. I hope to work with him in future too,” he added.

“Aiyaary”, set in Delhi, London and Kashmir, revolves around two strong-minded army officers having completely different views, yet right in their own ways. It is a real-life story based on the relationship between a mentor and a protege.

Slated to release on February 9, it features Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee in the lead roles.

On his role, Rajesh said: “I am playing negative role of Brigadier K Srinivas. It is always a challenge to play a character with grey shades.”

Sonam Kapoor felicitated young girls who have championed the spheres of health and hygiene and honouring them with Pretty Powerful PadMan Award.

Awaiting the release of her highly anticipated film starring Akshay Kumar, Padman, Sonam Kapoorwas approached by PVR Nest for She’s Ambassador Program launched by Dr. Nadir Patel, Canadian High Commissioner.

Based on hygiene, health and well being and using cinema as a medium for learning, the program is in tandem with the actress’ to-be-released movie. In its endeavour to felicitate young girls who have championed the spheres of health and hygiene and honouring them with Pretty Powerful PadMan Award, PVR Nest fittingly invited the gorgeous actress to grace the initiative.

Only recently, Sonam along with director R. Balki and Twinkle Khanna visited schools to interact with girls and distributed packets of sanitary pads among them. Furthering the cause of raising awareness about menstrual hygiene, the diva along with others mingled with young ‘Health Ambassadors’ across Mumbai, presented the awards and in her address inspired the girls to be confident and unashamed of their biology. Sonam said, ” These young girls who have championed the cause of health and hygiene deserve to be recognized for their contributions and I hope this sets an example.”

Mumbai gives Rajasthan freedom of expression goals with peaceful screenings of Padmaavat; viewers back Bhansali’s vivid storytelling skills, are baffled by the controversy

A CENSOR Board clearance and two Supreme Court verdicts in its favour, yet Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat continued to face the wrath of fringe groups a day into its release. Although multiplexes in four states – Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa – refused to screen the film amidst the ongoing tension, Mumbai viewers turned up in abundance to support the Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh starrer.

Having witnessed Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s spectacle at paid previews held yesterday and early shows this morning, cinephiles have one message for protesting outfits — watch it before you speak!

Mumbaikars attending the 8 am show at Ghatkopar’s R City Mall appeared baffled by the controversy. Parveen Ali Khan tells mid-day, “Films should be treated like films. I did not see anything in the movie that should offend anyone. The Rajputs are shown in good light.”

The controversial self-immolation scene (jauhar), too, did not seem to have been portrayed offensively, said another cine-goer, Sachin Benbanshi. “The jauhar scene only showed the sacrifice made by Rani Padmini. I don’t see a reason for controversy.”

Reiterating what Bhansali’s supporters have said ever since the outcry erupted in December 2017, college student Noor Khan, who watched the movie with friends, said, “People who caused controversy should watch the movie first. They will realise there is nothing in it that’s worth protesting over.

Having watched the film, I think the uproar caused isn’t justified.” The notion was backed by other moviegoers, including Khairun Shaikh and Vipin Tiwari. “I don’t want to comment on the controversy, but the movie was good. There is nothing offensive about any scene in the film,” says Shaikh.

Another city resident, Deepak Mishra, however, opines that had Bhansali merely portrayed historical facts instead of “showcasing a love angle at the beginning”, he could have avoided controversy.

While citizens suggested that the furor had little merit, Padmaavat attracted a fair share of criticism too. At 164-minutes, engineer Pratishtha Ram, a self-proclaimed cinephile, found the film “awfully slow”. “It’s overrated. It is visually gorgeous, but awfully slow. I found myself fidgeting with my phone throughout the first half. When the drama finally ensued, it was half-baked.”

Researcher Reshma Kadam appears to give words to our fears when she says, “Padmaavat will be a victim of its hype.” Having already grabbed eyeballs owing to the controversy, the film may find itself grappling to live up to expectations, she says. “The drama outside the theatre is more than that on screen.”
