Vicky Kaushal to slip into the role of Kangana Ranaut’s nemesis in her upcoming thriller set to roll in August

Kangana Ranaut
Kangana Ranaut

With only a short schedule of Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi pending, Kangana Ranaut has turned her attention towards her next project, a whodunit, which she hopes to title Mental. Interestingly, for her debut outing in the genre, Ranaut has zeroed in on Vicky Kaushal to feature alongside her. In a bid to keep the suspense around the thriller intact, insiders, we hear, are keeping their lips sealed about the storyline. However, a source reveals, “Kangana plays a dark character. Vicky slips into the part of her nemesis. He instantly fell for his role when he read the script. The makers wanted someone who could give a tough fight to Kangana’s character, and Vicky has showcased sufficient range to provide the same.”

Ahead of the first schedule in August, Kaushal we hear, will be allotted 15 days to gain a few pounds for the venture. The development comes after reports of the unit having approached Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao for the part. Kaushal is yet to sign on the dotted line.

While the film was set to roll in February, Ranaut will find herself occupied with the patch work for her Rani Laxmibai biopic before she can dive headfirst into this venture. “With Vicky too having a 40-day schedule for his next, Uri, in the pipeline, it was apt to defer this film.”

Despite its release and the movie glorifying the courage, bravery and valour of the Rajput community, the Karni Sena does not seem to be in a mood to let the controversies die down anytime soon.

From burning and attacking buses, vandalizing public property to wrecking havoc in various parts of the country, the Karni Sena has showed with its actions that it can go to extreme lengths to put a ban on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’; so much so that they burned down a car of their own group member (yet, no one looked at their determination and instead said ‘jaisi karni waisi bharni’).

However, after failing to put a ban on the release of this magnum opus, looks like the Karni Sena has decided to go for the ultimate ‘eye for an eye’ strategy by stepping inside the director’s shoes. Reportedly, in a recent press conference, the Rajput Karni Sena has announced that they will now make a movie on Bhansali’s mother. And they have even decided a name for the movie. It will be titled ‘Leela Ki Leela’. The film will be directed by Arvind Vyas and the script work has already started.

The Karni Sena leader, Govind Singh Khangarot, said, “Bhansali has insulted our mother Padmavati, but we will ensure that he feels proud of the movie we will make.” He further added, “As our country gives right to expression to everyone, we will ensure that this right is used to its fullest.” The choice of words sure is hilarious and ironic, given how they spent the past few days protesting the movie’s ban.

The movie will most probably be shot across Rajasthan. Well, if we go by the conditions that Karni Sena earlier raised during ‘Padmaavat’s making, isn’t this going to be distortion of facts? Since everyone knows that Bhansali was born in Mumbai and his family is Gujarati?

sanjay leela bhansaliBCCL

Since the Karni Sena is making a movie on Bhansali’s mother, shouldn’t they too take permission from Bhansali and even if refused, allow him to go and vandalise the sets of ‘Leela Ki Leela’ too? Shouldn’t they too agree to CBFC’s innumerable cuts and Bhansali’s demand for changing the movie’s name and removing scenes that he does not like?

Well, it will only seem fair if this happens. But, we guess only time will tell how the entire event unfolds. Until then, let’s wait for Bhansali’s reaction to this news.

srk_zeroIt was on Monday that Shah Rukh Khan and Aanand L Rai jointly made the title announcement of their upcoming film featuring King Khan as a dwarf. ‘Zero’, as the title reads, gave a glimpse of SRK dancing around in a vest and boxers. Now the makers have unveiled two new posters- one a character poster featuring Shah Rukh and the other, a title poster that sees a sky full of stars over the horizon with the title ‘Zero’ on it and a caption that reads, “Hum jiske peeche lag jaate hain…Life bana dete hain.” Helmed by Aanand L Rai, ‘Zero’ also stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma alongside Khan.

zeroOn the New Year of Jan 1st 2018, Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Aanand L. Rai engaged in Twitter banter regarding their upcoming film. The two decided that they will reveal the title of the film on New Year’s Day along with some visuals as a treat for the fans and they have lived up to their promise.

Taking to Twitter, King Khan revealed the title of the film as ‘Zero’ and also revealed a one-minute-long video clip. The quirky video acts as an amazing teaser for the movie and finally shows SRK in his dwarf avatar as he grooves to old Bollywood songs and behaves in an obnoxious manner. It looks like the actor will play the role of a dwarf that people will love to hate.

You know how sometimes a story or a song strikes a wonderful chord with our hearts that whenever we revisit it, we learn something new about what is does to our understanding and how we feel about it. ‘Tum Saath Ho’ from the movie ‘Tamasha’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone is exactly that magical tune that touches you everytime you listen to it. The whole situation, the raw emotions expressed in that scene, the expressions and the impecabble natural acting of conflicting emotions is unmatched.

Imtiaz Ali's Dissection Of The Scene That Led To 'Tum Sath Ho' Gives A New Meaning To The Song© Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment

While the credit of the scene definitely goes to the actors, but Imtiaz Ali the director of the movie also takes away a major chunk of applause for his beautiful way of directing it. In a recent video with Film Companion, Imtiaz shared a few insights on what led to the brilliance of the final product of the scenes that eventually led to the wonderful song ‘Tum Saath Ho’. He shars some inside information about the shoot and how the actors got into the chaacter and how they managed to improvise on the whol script themselves. The whole video gives a new meaning to the song after you watch him explain it.

How many of us knew that there were three versions of this song before this one came up or how this scene in the cafe was shot over two nights and the actors had to emotionally prepare to that. The song combines the brliiance of his direction, the stellar acting of Ranbir and Deepika, the musical genius of A.R Rahman and ofcourse the magic of Alka Yagnik and Arijit Singh.

We hope enjoyed this revelation as much as we did!

Thanks to the release of movies like ‘IT’, ‘Get Out’, ‘Annabelle: Creation’, ‘Gerald’s Game’ and more, 2017 was an unmatched visual treat for all the horror genre lovers. These movies and the directors behind them messed with our brains like no one else and instilled fear in our minds with their thrilling, trippy and unimaginably weird storyline.

And looks like 2018 won’t be any different either. In fact, it will be weirder, bizarre and more frightening than the previous year(s) because the directors are now leaving no stone unturned while toying with the horror genre. If you think that ‘Insidious’ is going to be the scariest movie this year, you are clearly missing out on the best or should we say the most chilling and bloodcurdling experience ever.

hereditary 2018 movieA24

Horror is hands down one of the trickiest genres to play with. Unlike other genres, horror movies benefit from the collective fear it infuses in the audience and in all honesty, no horror film can ever be considered a great one if it fails to make people jump from their seats, scream in fear or shudder for at least a few hours after the movie is finished. And Ari Aster’s directorial debut ‘Hereditary’ hints at doing the exact same thing.

After it premiered recently at the Sundance Film Festival (yes, the one that Priyanka Chopra has been constantly posting about), film experts and audience present inside the theatre have unanimously called ‘Hereditary’ as the ‘scariest horror movie in years’. Ari Aster’s directorial debut has earned the reputation of being an exceptionally scary horror movie and, given this hype, we honestly can’t wait to watch this now.

Well, coming from A24, the production house that has earlier given us movies like ‘Green Room’, ‘The Witch’ and ‘Lady Bird’; it doesn’t come as a surprise that this movie is being praised so much.

hereditary 2018 movieA24

‘Hereditary’ revolves around the lives of a family and a mysterious legacy they find themselves entwined in, after the family’s matriarch passes away. Toni Collette plays Annie graham who’s is in a state of shock after her mother Ellen’s death. After the family moves into Ellen’s house, strange and eerie things start happening to the family and they begin to unravel cryptic and terrifyingly dark secrets about their ancestry. Hence, the tagline – ‘Every family tree hides a secret’.

Aster has done a great job in giving nightmares to people with its unnerving and unsettling plot, but this slowly gripping tension, unexpected jump scares and scenes that will take more than prayers to sink in and get over, is what is making people love and fear this movie.

The movie is expected to release on June 8, 2018 and also stars Gabriel Byrne and Ann Dowd. So folks, it’s time to gear up for another crazy movie night with your bros. Dare them to watch ‘Hereditary’ with you once it releases.

With both, commercial and arty ventures on his plate, Manoj Bajpayee discusses how content-driven cinema has given his kind a new lease

Manoj Bajpayee
Manoj Bajpayee

In 2016, a 10-15 line monologue by intelligence agent Ranvir Singh convincing Taapsee Pannu’s Shabana, in Naam Shabana, was proving to be onerous for Manoj Bajpayee. Unrelenting, director Neeraj Pandey had kept him going for 10 takes, and demanded yet another. That the role was offered to Bajpayee on a platter — Pandey literally permitted him to select his character — had made the feat even more cumbersome. “Any other actor in my place would have crumbled,” says Bajpayee, who was “up for the challenge” that the filmmaker hurled at him. And it certainly was one, given that Pandey even refused to point out what it was that was going amiss. “He only says, ‘Second take… third take… fourth take’. He is always looking for something, but the actor will never know what [that is],” Bajpayee says.

That his acting prowess is challenged 25 years into his career implies that Bajpayee welcomes a collaboration with Pandey. His fifth association, the forthcoming Missing, with Tabu, sees Pandey as producer, while the sixth, Aiyaary, has him wield the director’s baton. The intellectual fodder that they offer each other implies that Bajpayee is sure to pick up a conversation with the filmmaker daily, even when they aren’t filming. “Every week, we also grab dinner together at his office or at a restaurant, where stories and ideas make for discussion. Ever-so-often, he sends across a copy of his script for my opinion. He pays heed to them on some occasions, he rejects them on the others. We are similar, intellectually. He understands my dreams and expectations as an actor, and I trust him. But generally, we don’t interfere in one another’s business.”

Bajpayee with wife Neha and daughter Ava

Even as he awaits the February 9 release of Pandey’s Aiyaary, the actor has his hands full with three other ventures, each of which, interestingly, is targeted at a distinct audience. While Dipesh Jain’s In The Shadows has been appeasing the festival-going audience, Sajid Nadiawala’s Baaghi 2 hopes to draw viewers of mainstream cinema. Bajpayee also has Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK’s The Family Man set for a digital outing, a platform he touts as the “next big thing”. Evidently basking under the glory of the limitless offers, he credits the growth of contextually strong cinema for the increasing attention that cinematic talents have been acquiring. “We are finally heading towards a time when performance-driven actors will be at par with superstars. And that was exactly what the fight was about. The fight was never about mainstream cinema versus art-house films. We just wanted an industry where all sorts of actors could co-exist, and we’re heading there.”

Neeraj Pandey
Neeraj Pandey

Yet, the eventual exhaustion of commercial cinema is unlikely, given the far-reaching effects of mainstream films. “It [commercial cinema] is a genre that is important. It reaches small towns, villages and multiplexes too. But, because of the changing world, especially the growth of the internet, there’s a large audience looking for great content as well. As a result, you get to see films like Aligarh and Budhia Singh.” The demand for great content, he says, is coupled with the desire to see stronger performance from actors of his kind. “Viewers want actors who are known to deliver with their performances to be at par with Western artistes. Also, their demand from every actor is different. They want to see a Salman Khan in a [film like] Tiger Zinda Hai. When they come to see Manoj Bajpayee, they want him [Bajpayee] surprise them with new acts. So, our job is to be really good in every role. And fortunately, while a Tiger Zinda Hai is working, a Newton is too. And this is healthy. There has always been a Robert De Niro and an Al Pacino, but there has also always been a Tom Cruise.”

While his fans would be up for a debate, Bajpayee insists, he has never been a talented actor. Harbouring the love for the craft since childhood, he says he knew he would need to off-set his perceived lack of flair with toil. “I need to work hard to recite every single line. I keep practicing it quietly before I’m required to deliver it. Also, I work on understanding the back-story of my character. If there isn’t one, I try to create it. Because I hold on to it for long. I can’t switch on and switch off. For me, if it’s switched on, it is on for a long time.”

A busy schedule sees Bajpayee neck-deep in work until August. But, after that he intends to take a four-month sabbatical to “refuel” himself for his forthcoming commitments. “It’s an essential for an actor if s/he wishes to be ready for every venture,” says the actor, as he goes on to spill the beans on how he intends to unwind.

“I have already started learning to cook. I’ve realised that it is something that I am slowly growing interested in. I want to cook meals for my daughter and surprise her with one dish or another. I want to give her the memory of her father’s dishes.”

There are some sequels that make you want to wait for the next instalment but not the same can be said about abysmal ‘Hate Story’ franchise. With every subsequent release, it just keeps getting worse! It’s high time that the people who actually made ‘Hate Story’ (all 4 parts of it) put this terrible franchise to rest, once and for all.

Image 1(c) T-Series

After 3 films, comes the fourth one starring Urvashi Rautela, Karan Wahi & Vivan Bhathena,, which essentially packages an old story in new bottle. It’s all about love, sex, dhokha and revenge. How original, isn’t it?

Image 2(c) T-Series

The trailer reminds us of old Hindi films where we have seen this over a zillion times now, but the only new factor is Urvashi Rautela’s unnecessary skin show in order to add some kind of sleaze factor. Except that Urvashi has nothing substantial to offer.

Image 2(c) T-Series

In the fourth ‘Hate Story’ film, you have Karan and Vivan who are essentially brothers. Urvashi plays a girl who is in love with Karan. On the other hand, you have Vivan who also loves Urvashi and Punjabi actress, Ihana Dhillion plays his girlfriend. Vivan is essentially mad in love with Urvashi, which forms the premises of the film. Talk about a ridiculous love triangle!

Image 4(c) T-Series

The sequences and the dialogue in the film will literally make you cringe.  You also see Gulshan Grover playing father to both the heroes.

Image 1(c) T-Series

The trailer says it’s not a love story….it’s a hate story. Well, we didn’t feel any hate, maybe more like apathy, but you should check out the trailer yourself and let us know if you felt any emotion whatsoever.

Directed by Vishal Pandya the film will hit the screens on March 9, 2018.
