Yesteryear actress, Shakila, who featured in cult movies like Wadia Movietone’s ‘Hatim Tai’ (1956), legendary Guru Dutt’s ‘Aar Paar’ (1954), ‘CID’ (1956), ‘Shriman Satyawadi’ (1960) with Raj Kapoor and  ‘China Town’ (1962) with Shammi Kapoor breathed her last on Wednesday afternoon. She was 82.

Shakila died after suffering a heart attack.

A Mumbai Mirror report states that she was seeking to be rushed to a nearby renowned hospital.

Her fellow actors from the 50s said that it was unfortunate that she couldn’t get immediate admission in the hospital and therefore had to be taken to Juhu’s Arogya Nidhi Hospital, said the same report.

The news of her death was confirmed by her nephew Nasirr Khan, son of veteran comedian Johnny Walker.

Taking to social media, he wrote, “With a heavy heart, i have 2 inform u all dat my maternal aunt (my moms older sister) Shakila Aunty has passed away. She was a star in her own right in the 50’s n 60’s. Babuji dheere chalna, pyaar mein zara sambhalna…Please keep her in ur prayers. May Allah grant her Jannat (sic).”

Often described as the ‘queen of Indian movies,’ she quit the film industry, married an NRI industrialist, and settles in the UK. She later returned to Mumbai’s Marine Drive for a few years.

However, after her daughter Meenaz committed suicide, she shifted to her Bandra residence, where she was currently residing.

She was best friends with Saira Banu, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Nanda and Jabeen Jalili.
