The actor’s aggressive avatar as Khilji — as seen in the poster of the film — caught the attention of Bollywood buffs. He sports kohl eyes, long tresses and a scar on his face for the role of the anti-hero in the period drama. Deepika essays the title role in the movie, which sets out to tell the tale of the valour and heroism of Rajputs. Shahid Kapoor features as her husband.

Vidya Balan says if the need arises, female actors will unite to fight for their rights in B-Town. A few months ago, South actors Manju Warrier, Parvathy, Bhavana, Anjali Menon, Geethu Mohan Das and Rima Kallingal came together to form the Women in Cinema Collective, an association that fights patriarchy and gender bias in the Malayalam film industry.

“It’s a great initiative. I don’t know if we should do it [form an association] because they have done it, but they have set an example. Women deserve equal rights. So far, there hasn’t been a need for us to come together, but if it arises, all the actresses will unite,” says the Tumhari Sulu actor.

Balan feels it’s important for women to be vocal if they are harassed. “Irrespective of how successful a woman is, I don’t think they feel safe addressing sexual harassment. The recent example of producer Harvey Weinstein was shocking. Many big and powerful actresses chose not to speak against him. Women need to come out and talk,” she says.

Tomorrow morning will see Ajay Devgn head out for his fitness regimen — only, this time, he will swap the gym for Mumbai roads and keeping him company in his workout will be his German Shepherd, Koko. As part of the second edition of a petathon, pet owners and their canines will gather at MMRDA Grounds in Bandra for a mile-long marathon. The initiative aims to increase awareness around pet health and give tips to owners on better parenting of their four-legged friends.

Such is the charm of the marathon that Bollywood stars including Parineeti Chopra, Tusshar Kapoor and Arshad Warsi will be seen participating in it. A source reveals, “Tusshar is extremely attached to his mini Pomeranian Poshto. The minute he heard about the event, he was game. Arshad too will be running with his pet dog, Zuniboo.”

Fitness enthusiast Tiger Shroff, who is the face of the event, says, “Being fit is not just a part of my profession, but my passion too. I am glad such an event has been organised. I love dogs and am excited to be a part of this brilliant initiative.”

The event, the first edition of which was kicked off last year at Gandhi Maidan in Chembur, is expected to last for four hours. Besides pet owners and the health-conscious, the marathon will be attended by city’s leading veterinarians and members of animal rights groups.

The recently released posters of the film were appreciated by the audiences, especially Kareena’s look. Sonam Kapoor has also acquired the movie rights for the book series, ‘The Aryavarta Chronicles’. The bestseller series by Singapore-based author Krishna Udayasankar is a modern re-telling of the epic Mahabharata through the novels ‘Govinda’, ‘Kaurava’ and ‘Kurukshetra’ that collectively comprise the series. The 32-year-old actor had previously bought the film rights of Anuja Chauhan’s novel ‘The Zoya Factor’.

After King Khan’s birthday blowout in Alibaug, the week will end with another B-Town bash — this one hosted by Deepika Padukone. mid-day has learnt that the actor is hosting a party at her Prabhadevi pad tonight to celebrate the overwhelming response she has received for Padmavati trailer.

Deepika Padukone

On the guest list is the magnum opus’ team including co-stars Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. A Padukone soiree cannot be complete without Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra and Aditya Roy Kapur. Her new friends, Ittefaq producer Kapil Chopra and director Abhay Chopra too have been invited.

A source reveals, “Whoever Deepika has met in the last few weeks, including Alia, has been complimenting her on the trailer and the song, Ghoomar. Even at SRK’s bash, the constant chatter was around how she needs to celebrate the film.”

While her on-screen husband Kapoor may skip the do as he is out of town, it will be interesting to see if her off-screen love interest makes his presence felt. Rumours suggest all is not well in paradise, with stories hinting that her last-minute decision to attend the film’s 3D trailer launch left Singh miffed. However, the flirtatious exchange on Instagram between the two yesterday tells a different tale.

Yesterday, Twinkle Khanna issued an apology on social media for defending husband Akshay Kumar’s sexist comment to former co-judge Mallika Dua on The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. Last week, the star wife had added to the controversy by saying, “Humour should be seen in the right context.”

She had even poked fun at Mallika and her father, veteran scribe Vinod Dua. Twinkle wrote that the emotional outburst was due to the trolls, who dragged her children into the controversy.

She wrote, “I got pulled into this debate not as a social commentator, but as a wife and unlike my normal, slightly rational self (sic).” All’s well that ends well.

Indian actor Ali Fazal, who featured with Judi Dench in “Victoria and Abdul”, will deliver a speech at The Contenders event in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Ali will share anecdotes on Indian cinema, about his role in the film and about growing diversity in Hollywood amongst other things.

Ali Fazal

“Ideally, it would have been Judi and me there but I am going alone this time and of course, ‘Victoria and Abdul’ has done well across the globe. The way American audience has responded, it is really inviting and nice,” Ali said in a statement.

“Basically, Focus Features (film production and distribution firm) have three films this year which are part of the contenders and we all are going to be there.

“This is like early stage contenders of the year who are giving a talk on how we came about making the film and what was our role in it and of course when it comes to me, speaking on diversity and the involvement of actors such as me,” he added.

In “Victoria and Abdul”, Ali played Abdul Karim alongside Dench, who essayed Queen Victoria.

The Contenders is an annual event where the biggest film studios from Hollywood get together to discuss the best in the cinema of the year and two to three films form each studio are elected.

‘Ittefaq’
Director: Abhay Chopra
Actors: Akshaye Khanna, Siddharth Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha
Rating: 3 stars

It’d take a lot of guts to put together a tight-skinned, song-less mainstream film, starring top A-listers, and to top that, begin the picture with a wholly unrelated, trippy, psychedelic, multi-coloured, rotating animation stinging your eyes in a dark hall for almost three minutes at a stretch, even before the frickin’ opening credits have begun to roll! Wait, what was that for? Well, just!

'Ittefaq'
Sonakshi Sinha and Sidharth Malhotra in  a still from the song ‘Raat Baki’

That, incidentally, was Yash Chopra’s Ittefaq (produced by BR Chopra) from back in 1969, starring Rajesh Khanna (at the peak of his career), no less. This is a fun-fact to bear in mind, for millennials who either unfairly believe Yash Chopra was simply the ‘king of romance’, or that experimentation in popular Hindi cinema began with the late ‘90s brat-pack—Anurag Kashyap, etc—viscerally inclined towards the dark side.

This film, produced by Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, among others, marks the directorial debut of BR Chopra’s grandson, Abhay, and so far as thrillers go, the first thing it gets right is that it packs up in under two hours flat (an hour and 45 minutes, to precise). Which is perfect duration to give the screen your undivided, unwavering attention for a whodunit that otherwise might leave you with more questions than it answers. Before your mind wanders in those directions, you’ve had your fill (of the popcorn and the pic), and you’re good to go.

I’m going to set aside the ItteFAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) you’re likely to have, since that would inevitably mean giving the movie away. Much like Hitchcock’s Psycho, the promotion of this picture itself is pretty much hinged on urging audiences not to reveal the end—it’s the only one they’ve got!

As for the beginning, all you need to know is there’s a cop (Akshaye Khanna, in superb form), looking to solve two murders that ittefaq se, or coincidentally, to the point of disbelief, take place over the same night, and involves one person (Siddharth Malhotra) being present at both crime scenes. The two murders, or if they were even murders in the first place, on the face of it, have nothing to do with each other, except that in one case (a hotel room), a wife is found dead (Malhotra’s), while in the other (a super fancy apartment), a husband (Sonakshi Sinha’s).

Malhotra plays a popular crime-fiction writer, based in the UK. Looking at him, the cop immediately says, “Hey, but you don’t look like a writer.” Well he doesn’t, but then again, who does? He’s a quiet sort of bloke though, at the centre of a murder mystery that, as per diktat, has to be solved in three days, no more. Which is as long as this film needs to pack audiences in theatres and walk away with a hit. Does this movie hit you in the way it should though? Honestly, you wish it wasn’t so overtly production-designed, even sanitized—and there was more ‘Mumbai’ in a movie so ‘Bombay’—for a grimy thriller. But it keeps you thoroughly glued to your seat, and that, for a pay-off, is pretty much worth whatever you paid for.

Thankfully I don’t remember Yash Chopra’s Ittefaq that this is a remake of (poor memory has its benefits). It’s available on YouTube (I rightly stopped right after the pre-movie psychedelia!). It was evidently inspired by a Guajarati play Dhoommas, which in turn was based on the play Signpost To Murder, that had already been made into a film by the same name. Given the number of hands the first script has passed, with sufficient changes made each time (I’m told, in the beginning, there was only one murder, instead of two), it’d be fair to consider this a fully original version by now!

I also don’t remember the last time I watched a full-on, no-nonsense, whodunit Hindi mainstream murder mystery in a theatre, with no way to talk about it but to urge you to see it, because that’s the only way we can discuss it any further. I think you should check it out, just so we can take this conversation offline, to start with!
