Shawn Mendes scooped the big gongs at the MTV Europe Music Awards held in London’s SSE Arena, Wembley, this morning, defeating industry bigwigs like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Ed Sheeran to bag the Best Artiste nod. The singer walked into the event with five nominations, coming in second only to Taylor Swift, who had six titles to aspire for. Swift won none.
Celebrations were also due for Eminem, who kicked off the show with the live premiere of his new single, Walk On Water. Collecting his gong for the Best Hip-Hop Artiste, the rapper expressed surprise at beating Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone and Drake, given that he hasn’t released an album since 2013. “I got one coming though,” he said.
British singer Rita Ora proved to be an entertaining host. She performed a carnival-esque medley of Your Song and Anywhere, and carried forth with the traditional EMA hosting duties involving elaborate costume changes. While she gave the fashion police enough fodder with her attires, a peculiar white bathrobe, that saw her flash her undergarments, faced ample criticism.
Even the heavy security deployed at the gig, given the recent attacks at Manchester and Las Vegas, couldn’t prevent an awkward planned stage invasion, when a male member of the crowd clambered onstage for 30 seconds. He unfurled a banner during French Montana’s rendition of Unforgettable before being escorted away.
U2 collected the previously announced Global Icon award from Jared Leto, who hailed the Irish band as “a way of life.” The show culminated in celebratory style with David Guetta performing his new single, Dirty, Sexy, Money.
