Actor Saqib Saleem says the shooting of “Dil Juunglee” has helped him develop a close bond with the cast and crew.

He says his friendship with actress Taapsee Pannu is such that they used to hit each other after shooting a romantic scene.

“If you watch the making of our film, you will know how we were shooting. Taapsee and I would be shooting an intense romantic scene and as soon as the director used to say cut, we would start hitting each other.

“I think not just me, but we all have developed a good friendship with Taapsee… We were a young team and everyone was looking out for each other,” Saqib said here.

“Honestly, I didn’t even realise when we finished the film. Usually, while shooting, there comes a time when you think when will the shoot end and you will start your next movie. But here, we never wanted it to end, which is why we also moved the movie from February 16 to March 9,” he added, laughing.

The team also celebrated Holi on Thursday.

“Holi is a festival I really enjoy and it’s an occasion which brings people together. This celebration with ‘Dil Junnglee’ team is my most memorable Holi. Before this none of my films were released on (or around) Holi, which is why this Holi will always have special importance in my life,” Saqib said.

“Dil Juunglee” director Aleya Sen said the title talks about how you feel when in you are in love.

“Your heart will behave out of character and make you do crazy things. When you are in love, you are really wild.”

The director also said the characters in the movie are inspired by people who exist.

“All the characters we wrote for the movie are real people that we knew. I wrote the story with my sister, and these are actual people who we know and we knew.”

Produced by Pooja Entertainment, the film also features Nidhi Singh, Abhilash Thapliyal and Srishti Srivastava.

She has received appreciations from critics and audiences alike for films like Pink, Naam Shabana and Judwaa 2, but actress Taapsee Pannu, who has been described as the “most powerful woman of the year” by a magazine, says she is yet to touch stardom and still feels like a struggler.

Considering her achievements, does she feel she has gained stardom?

“Not at all. I don’t even feel like a star. I still feel like a struggler because I need to really work hard and make sure that my Friday works for me. I still don’t feel I am the one who will get the audience into theatres as yet. I don’t see that I have that pull, I am trying to make that,” Taapsee told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

She started her career as a model in 2008 and made her acting debut with Telugu film “Jhummandi Naadam” in 2010. Three years later, she stepped into Bollywood with Chashme Baddoor.

“The day I feel my audience is taking a ticket of my film and says ‘It’s Taapsee’s film, let’s go and watch it’, that day I will believe I am a star, before that no,” she added.

She has featured in a myriad of genres like comedy, thriller, drama, courtroom drama and romance.

Asked if she is trying to balance between genres, she said: “Of course yes, that is the idea behind mixing things up because I feel if I keep doing hard-hitting films which people (the audience) have loved me in and I am very happy about it, I feel people will stereotype me. They will start calling me that I am someone who does only these kind of not so mainstream cinema.”

The actress says she does not want to get pigeonholed in a particular genre.

“I don’t want them (the audience) to stereotype me because then the impact of these hard-hitting films will die down after a time because they would know what they would expect out of me. So, the fun is to mix and match because then you don’t know what you are coming up with next,” she added.

Taapsee, 30, is riding the burgeoning wave of films with female lead or co-lead roles with films like “Baby”, “Naam Shabana” and “Pink”. She feels confident that it is a trend going in the right direction and will continue.

Talking about the swift change from male to female lead actors in films, Taapsee said: “Of course efforts have been made and I am so happy to see each and every leading lady trying to make an effort to do a female-centric film. I think it’s a good way to begin at least to be open to taking risks and chances.”

The actress said that when she made her debut, she only saw particular actresses, who weren’t termed as mainstream heroines and doing female-centric movies.

“But within four years, you can see such a huge change where all the female A-listers, mainstream actresses today are doing at least one female-centric film a year which is so beautiful to see and the result of it is at par as the male-centric film but at least it is headed towards the right direction,” she added.

Taapsee also credits the audience for the positive shift.

“We are giving the audience content and the audience is slightly opening up I feel… At least they are giving us little bit of an opportunity. We just need to make sure to do good films as female protagonists as the audience continues to believe in us,” she added.

Topping list of fastest growing stars in Bollywood, Alia Bhatt credits her offbeat movie choices for audiences’ love; Taapsee Pannu comes second

Alia Bhatt

From selecting movies that steer clear of the run-of-the-mill to making their voice heard on social media, Alia Bhatt, Anushka Sharma and Taapsee Pannu are writing their own rules in an industry that is believed to be a tough place, more so for women. Not surprising then that the trio emerged the ‘fastest growing female stars’ in an annual research conducted by Ormax, a company acknowledged as pioneers of film research in India. The study saw a star’s ascent being determined on the basis of three parameters – their films released last year, their upcoming slate of projects and their growth on social media.

Taapsee Pannu

Thrilled about topping the list, Bhatt says that her passion for films is what prompts her to explore complex characters on screen. “My characters are what I will leave behind in life. My goal is to make memorable movies and create unforgettable characters,” she says.

Anushka Sharma

Point out how her popularity on the Internet too plays a role in her bagging the top spot and she says that when it comes to her social media accounts, she is “just a regular girl having fun”. “I am more active on Instagram and it is filled with pictures of my cat. I give them [her followers] a glimpse of my life. But I also try to make sure that if I am saying things, it should serve some purpose. I want to have a distinct voice of my own.”

Pannu ranks second on the list courtesy a commercial success in Judwaa 2 last year. Her ‘call a spade a spade’ attitude too resonates with her fans. Stating that such acceptance from the audience gives a boost to an outsider like her, she says, “[It’s encouraging] for someone like me who did not know anyone in the film industry, had no multi-film deals with studios or any godfather to fall back on. Wherever I am today is because of my audience and that’s what pushes me to do better.”

Even before rumours of her liking for ‘Brahmastra’ co-star Ranbir Kapoor manage to gather steam, it appears that Alia Bhatt has found love elsewhere.

Saqib Saleem and Taapsee Pannu starrer Dil Juunglee’s trailer has been released by its makers. While Taapsee sports a nerdy look in the first half of the trailer, there is a stark image makeover of her character in the second half of the trailer. Saqib plays a regular Delhi guy, whose English twang is rather interesting. The dialogues look quirky, while even the music seems catchy. All in all, Dil Juunglee looks like a fun roller coaster ride of the couple’s love story. The film also stars actors Nidhi Singh, Abhilash Thapliyal and Sristi Srivastava.
