Narendra-HirawatShah Rukh Khan suffered a blow with his last release, Jab Harry Met Sejal turning out to be a box-office turkey. Six weeks before the release of Khan’s love story, his friend Salman Khan, too, lost his Midas touch as the much anticipated Tubelight failed to set the cash registers ringing upon release.

While both Khans are reeling under the setback, the biggest victim has been distributor Narendra Hirawat of NH Studioz. Rumours suggest he lost almost Rs 60 crore over the failure of the two projects.

Hirawat, who had bagged the all-India distribution rights of Tubelight, was in for a rude shock when the film did not recreate the magic of previous Salman movies. While Salim Khan had promised to compensate the distributors who suffered a setback, Hirawat denied receiving any compensation.

Speaking to mid-day, he said, “We haven’t received any money from Salman Khan. All these reports about distributors receiving money, are false.”

However, Hirawat is confident that Salim Khan will honour his word. “I have worked with them many times and we have always been on good terms. Salim saab has promised to compensate us for the loss. I’m confident they will do it. Whenever it happens, I will inform everyone about it.”

When asked if he expects a similar move from Shah Rukh Khan, he said, “The movie has not lived up to the expectations, because of which we have suffered a huge loss. Like Salman, I have worked with Shah Rukh in the past too. He is a nice person. I hope we get some kind of compensation for Jab Harry Met Sejal too, but it is all up to them [the producers]. As of now, there hasn’t been any word on it.”

We reached out to Salim Khan, who asserted that Salman Khan Films will soon provide the compensation, as promised. The celebrated screenwriter said, “Ek baar jo humne commitment kar di hai, toh woh patthar ki lakeer hai. We haven’t returned the money yet, as it takes time to calculate the amount. Many people are involved, so, it can’t be done overnight. We will definitely return the money.”

For Indians, Salman Khan isn’t just a superstar. He’s a demigod. His fans worship him. Bhai is more than just a craze, who makes it big at the box office with every film. ‘Dabangg’, ‘Sultan’, and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ left everyone impressed but can the same be said about his most-anticipated film ‘Tubelight’?

This Bollywood adaptation of ‘Little Boy’ is set in Jagatpur, a small town in North India. The plot revolves around the two brothers with the Indo-China war as the backdrop. Laxman (Salman Khan) is a simple gold-hearted man but people call him ‘Tubelight’ due to his low IQ and child-like behaviour. Narayan (Mohd Zeeshan) is one of the locals who poke fun at him and even slaps him without any reason. Bharat (Sohail Khan) is Laxman’s brother whom he loves immensely. However, Bharat has to leave the village as he joins the Indian Army during the Indo-China war. Manne Chacha (Om Puri), during that time, teaches Laxman about the importance of Gandhi’s philosophy and ideology. Liling (Zhu Zhu) and Guo (Matin Rey Tangu) play the Chinese immigrants who are obviously the reason for the problems as per the villagers.

Playing on the Hindi-Chini sentiment, the film tries to make a point that love conquers all if you have hope. But does the film conquer reviewers as well?

Kabir Khan and Salman Khan mess it up BIG TIME

Even a filmmaker like Kabir Khan can have his bad days and ‘Tubelight’ is one such proof for him. The director, who is known for creating films that have a much deeper meaning and leave a great impact on his viewers, leaves us heavily disappointed with this film. Remember ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, which made us so emotional that we couldn’t help but shed some tears? Well, ‘Tubelight’ is nowhere close to it.

This Eid, give this a miss!

In B-town, Eid belongs to Bhaijaan. In fact, #SalmanKiEid starts trending before the release of his films. But unfortunately, this Eid doesn’t belong to Sallu. ‘Little Boy’ failed to impress its viewers in the West and similarly, ‘Tubelight’ has all the elements of disappointment for us this side. So how about you spend some time with your family instead of heading to the theatre this Eid?

Tubelight tries to emotionally manipulate you

Kabir Khan uses emotion as a tool to move Indian viewers. And certainly, Indians do love their emotions, drama, and tears. We definitely love a fully packed film that makes us shed tears but that doesn’t mean we will shed tears seeing Salman cry every other second in the film! The makers shamelessly try to turn you into a sentimental wreck who will sob looking at Salman breaking down but it ain’t happening this time, Kabir!

Half a star for trying but that’s it

‘Tubelight’ flickers and flickers and flickers, but fails to light up even at the credits. By the intermission you are left bored and beaten. This is certainly not what you envision when you think about Salman and Kabir, as the two of them have worked their charm before. The whole problem with the film is its plot– it’s unpolished, where either things fall out of context or they fail to make any point. But still, we’ve got to give the makers of the film half a star for at least trying.

The tagline ‘Kya tumhe yakeen hai?’

The tagline of the film is ‘Kya tumhe yakeen hai?’, (Do you have hope?). Well, we  guarantee you by the end of the film, you will lose all hope and wonder what did you just watch.

Matin Rey Tangu, Zhu Zhu, and late Om Puri are the stars

Tubelight Movie Review And Rating Featuring Salman Khan© Salman Khan Films

Matin, the little boy in the film, takes away all the focus from Salman. In fact, when he shares on-screen space with Salman is the only time you feel for the main hero of the film. Matin is extremely cute and shines throughout the film, making tons of fans in the process. Zhu Zhu has limited screen presence but makes it a point that you fall for her every time she appears on screen. The late Om Puri’s performance is spot on as well, and will stay with us for a very long time.

Well, Sohail Khan proves his acting skill

When one Khan brother lets you down, another shines, taking you by surprise. Salman’s delivery and acting in the film is too difficult to digest. In fact, he gets on your nerves with his child-like acts. To put it mildly, and to quote ‘Tropic Thunder’, he went ‘full retard’. Every time he cries, you feel exhausted, it’s something to do with that face he makes that annoys you. Putting it simply, Salman’s shoddy performance works in favour of his brother Sohail, giving him the space to shine.

The Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai sentiment

Well, who doesn’t love it when it all ends well? Using the Hindi-Chini relationship to make a concrete point, Kabir Khan tries his level best. But leaves you with the only sentiment that is Hindi-Chini Bye Bye. The entire thing backfires, big time.

MensXP verdict

What happens when the main hero isn’t convincing enough? A film like ‘Tubelight’ is born. It is an obvious fact that the ardent fans of Salman may forgive him and the maker for delivering such a film, but not EVERY person is a Salman fan. Please note that the 1962 war was a lost cause for India and so is the film. And you don’t have to be a ‘Tubelight’ to figure this one out. Watch this film only if your love for Salman is unconditional.

P.S. Wondering why a cameo by Shah Rukh Khan was required in the film? Well, we will get back to you once we figure it out!

Ahead of the release of his film ‘Tubelight’, actor Salman Khan is busy with promotions and has been participating in various media events. However, at a recent press conference, it wasn’t Khan but his youngest co-actor, 8-year-old Matin Rey Tangu, who stole the show and our hearts with his innocent comments.

We are not trying to start any racial debate here, but time and again people from the North East are made to feel that they aren’t a part of India. Recently, Matin too found himself at the center of such discussions and taught the much-needed general knowledge lessons to even the adults. Matin who hails from Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh, was asked by a reporter whether he has come to India for the first time. Matin who looked clearly confused by this question asked the reporter to ask the question again. After Salman explained the question to him, he understood what the question really meant and answered the same in an innocent yet the most badass manner.

Matin said, “Hum India par hi rehte hai to India par aege hi kaise?” (I live in India, so how will I come to India?”) This one line has won our hearts and now all we can wish for is a society where one does not get racially discriminated. The audience was smitten by his answer and start applauding him. Set in the 1962 Sino-Indian war, Kabir Khan’s directorial venture is releasing on June 23rd. It also stars Chinese actress Zhu Zhu and Sohail Khan.

The buzz about Salman Khan starrer film ‘Tubelight’ being a remake of the Hollywood movie ‘Little Boy’, has been doing rounds since last year, but the makers have finally come out and given credits to the Alejandro Monteverde movie in the end section claiming it as the Official Story Adaptation. ‘Tubelight’ is an Indian War drama that revolves around two brothers – Sohail Khan playing the ideal elder brother who goes to war and Salman the younger one waiting for his return. The title of the movie itself is inspired by Salman’s character, as someone who takes a while to process things. He has the brain and innocence of a child, as shown in the official trailer with him being addressed as “Tubelight”.

Kabir Khan clears all doubts in an interview – “it’s just the seed of an idea. Everything else has been completely changed in ‘Tubelight’”, says the director. But then again, it doesn’t seem so considering the pictures and the videos that are surfacing on the internet which highlight similar scenes from the American production.

However there seem to be slight differences in the plot as ‘Little Boy’ focuses on dwarfism and the title of the movie explains the concept when Pepper Flynt asks his doctor if he has dwarfism, and the doctor tells him, “For now, Pepper, let’s just say you’re a ‘little boy’. Similarly, ‘Tubelight’ seems to be an extension of Salman Khan’s character, for which the makers have bought a no objection certificate from the Kannada movie ‘Tubelight’, albeit the Kannada movie has an entirely different plot than the Bollywood one. What seems to be a Hollywood movie revolving around a father and son, the Kabir Khan production decided to focus on two brothers instead.

Salman Khan who is known to launch newcomers in the industry has always been seen pairing up with new faces or with the bigger actresses of B-town. The buzz this time is tenfold as Chinese actress Zhu Zhu is playing his love interest in ‘Tubelight’.
