New Delhi: Steven Finn is a doubtful starter for the fourth and final Test against India at Nagpur starting tomorrow due to a sore back.

Finn who missed the first two Tests due to injury made a comeback in the Eden Test, but probably will miss the next match. Finn did not take part in the practice session and a scan showed a minor disc injury in the lower back. He has not been ruled out of the match yet.

This comes as a huge blow to the England side who are aiming to become win a series in India after a gap of 27 years.

Earlier Stuart Broad was also ruled out of the Test due a foot injury.

Steven Finn has emerged as a major injury doubt ahead of the fourth Test in Nagpur after suffering a back injury. Finn, who missed the first two Tests with a thigh strain, reported some soreness on the final day of the Kolkata Test. A scan has shown a minor disc injury in his lower back and he was unable to take any part in training on Wednesday.

While the England team management are not ruling Finn out of the Test, his inclusion would appear to involve them taking an uncharacteristic risk. They are expected to pick just two seamers for the game, so will be loathe to go into it with any injury doubts over one of them.

Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the Test after a scan on his left heel showed bruising. He will remain with the squad for now with a decision taken over his availability for the T20 games over the next few days.

Tim Bresnan is the likely replacement for Finn. Bresnan was dropped after a disappointing performance in the first Test in Ahmedabad.

The England Performance Programme (EPP) squad is currently in Pune, but there are no plans to call-up a substitute for Broad or Finn.

Mohammad Azharuddin said that it was right decision by the selectors to drop Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh from the team for the fourth and final Test against England, says a report in The Indian Express.

“The selectors’ decision to keep non-performing players out of the team is proper. Not only these two but all those who are not performing should be rested,” he said.

Azharuddin said that both Harbhajan and Yuvraj are class players and they would surely come back in Team India. “They have plenty of cricket left in them and would surely come back in the national side.”

On Sachin’s retirement, he said, “Sachin is a great player and let him and selectors decide about his future. The selection committee is the proper body to decide about who should play and who should retire.”
