National award-winning makeup, hair and prosthetic designer Preetisheel Singh was so perturbed by all the controversies and protests surrounding Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’, she chose not to say anything about her work for it till its release. “It broke my heart witnessing all the turmoil the film was going through. So I had decided, I will only speak about it when the labour of love met success,” remarks Preetisheel who designed the looks for all the top artists including Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.

“I cannot even imagine how Bhansali Sir would have coped up with the storm. My admiration for him has increased manifold,” she adds.

The best in her business, Preetisheel knows her job inside-out, but admits that her work for ‘Padmaavat’ was extremely challenging. “When working with Bhansali Sir, one has to be ready to always put in that extra bit as he has such a keen eye for aesthetics and detail. I read the script and understood the characters — how they dealt with people. I visualised the environment they would have grown up in, their likes and dislikes, their personality etcetera,” she explains.

“There’s a lot of study that went into getting under the skin of every character. Post this, I went through my look-references and finally came up with something that would equally excite the director and the actors. I was thrilled when Bhansali Sir finalised the looks.”

With the movie garnering tremendous acclaim from all quarters and being a roaring success at the box office, Preetisheel is “super happy and relieved that everyone’s efforts have finally borne fruit.”

It can be noted here that she has also received accolades earlier for her work with actors in more than a dozen films including ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Rangoon’, ‘Brothers’, ‘Mom’, ‘Haider’, ‘Parched’, ‘Hawaizaada’, ‘Shivaay’, ‘Talwar’, ‘Housefull 3’, ‘Ghayal Once Again’, ‘Finding Fanny’, the Tamil film ’24’ as well as the pre-Mughal historical epic ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’ for which she won the ‘National Film Award for Best Makeup’.

The first song of ‘Padmavati’, ‘Ghoomar’ is out and it is full of grandiose. The song is set in a royal palace, where ‘Padmavati’ is performing the traditional folk dance of Rajasthan along with several other women. Shahid Kapoor, looks royal as Maharawal Ratan Singh, but is is Deepika who is winning hearts. Deepika looks ethereal as ‘Rani Padmavati’ and has mastered the ‘Ghoomar’ dance to the t. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has paid attention to even minute details, ‘Ghoomar’ showcases the grandeur and exquisite culture of the ‘Rajputs’.

Deepika, is wearing the traditional ghaghra choli and is seen twirling several times in the dance sequence. ‘Ghoomar’ is considered one of the most difficult dance forms to master, knowing how the twirling and the footwork has to be in sync. But, Deepika has pulled off the dance with a lot of poise, elan and grace. The song has been sung by Shreya Ghoshal, who has added an angelic and earthy feel to it.

Deepika Padukone has tweeted how ‘Ghoomar’ was the most difficult, yet fulfilling song sequences she performed in her career.

For those who don’t know, ‘Ghoomar’ is the traditional folk dance and a part of the heritage of Rajasthan. Just like ‘Bajirao Mastani’ showed Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone in a ‘laavni’ face-off ‘Pinga’, ‘Padmavati’ will have ‘Ghoomar’ as their traditional dance sequence.

A traditional dance form of Rajput women, the routine involves twirling in circles, leaving the onlookers enchanted and mesmerized by the beautiful dance performance. An extremely difficult performance art that takes years to learn, Deepika had to pick up the steps within a matter of days. With myriad of gracefulness and a royal poise, the song was shot keeping true to the traditional Rajputana folk dance form.

Sources reveal that Deepika did over 66 twirls while shooting for the song. Adding to the difficult dance form that includes twists and twirls, Deepika had to do the dance in an extravagant costume and adorned in heavy jewelry, which is a feat in itself.

Commenting on Ghoomar, Deepika said, “The Ghoomar Song has been one of the most difficult song sequences that Sanjay Sir and I have shot for. His vision can be seen in the grandiose of the set and the immense hard work we’ve all put into making it. I had started preparing for this film and character for several months before we actually started filming. But it was for The Ghoomar Song that I walked onto set as ‘Padmavati’ for the very first time. The shooting of Padmavati began with ‘The Ghoomar Song’ and I will never forget that day. I remember approaching my mark for the first shot and suddenly I felt a chill run through my body. It was almost as if Padmavati‘s soul had entered my body. That feeling still lingers and will continue for years to come”.

With the battle scar on the face coupled with the densely-kohled malevolent eyes and long mane- Ranveer looks every bit the antagonistic Alauddin Khilji that he is to portray in the film. ‘Padmavati’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali is slated to release on December 1, 2017.

And the torch-bearer of these awesome releases is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’. Even before its release, the movie has been turning several heads and how. First, it was the controversy around the movie’s plot and the film sets being vandalized, and then things took a lighter turn when we saw how striking Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor will look in the movie as goddess queen Rani Padmini, and fierce and undefeated Maharawal Ratan Singh. We are already gasping for air after looking at the two.

Bhansali is known for his larger than life movies, which are filled with grandeur and opulence and this magnum-opus promises to tick all those boxes as well. Ranveer Singh will play the role of a cruel and ruthless antagonist who gets mesmerized by the beauty of Rani Padmavati. Well, when you have Deepika Padukone as the lead, it’s really difficult for anyone to not fall for her charm.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming project ‘Padmavati’ fall in the latter category, after we saw the film’s sets being vandalized and posters and banners being burnt in retaliation against the movie. However, all these controversies couldn’t deter Bhansali from moving ahead with his magnum-opus period drama and despite several delays and protests, we finally got to see the first look of goddess queen Rani Padmini.

While we were still dumbfounded over Deepika’s regal look and the beauty she is, Bhansali dropped another bomb on us, which will take really long to recuperate from. In another tweet, Shahid Kapoor wrote “Maharawal Ratan Singh, saahas, saamarthya aur sammaan ka prateek.” In fact, talking about his look Shahid reportedly said, “When you are playing a King, you need to have a certain personality. At that time, the people used to not be very skinny and lean, so you need to have a manly personality. Basically for that, and to carry those outfits also, Sanjay sir wants me to be a little muscular and a little full. But I will be gaining weight in terms of muscle and not in terms of fat. This is because I am playing the character of a warrior. The Rajput kings had very strong personalities.” Well, now that the look is out, we don’t think there could have been a better choice than Shahid.
