salman-akshay-dabangg-tour3“Mashallah, Da Bang Tour was a huge hit. Sonakshi (Sinha), Salman (Khan) bhai, Bipasha (Basu Singh Grover) and Prabhudheva were all in their element. It was a fiery and compact show. The response and hysteria was unimaginable. Getting it to India was a natural progression,” says actor-filmmaker Sohail Khan, discussing his brother’s popular tour, which entertained the Indian diaspora in Hong Kong, Auckland and Melbourne, a couple of months ago. It is now set to come to India on a five-city voyage.

Sohail says the tour was special because people bagged the rare opportunity of watching the star perform live. “Except for at awards nights, bhai doesn’t perform live. He hasn’t connected with his fans on such a scale for 15 years. An entire generation has passed since then,” he adds.

Salman Khan and his team plan to travel across Delhi, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata. “Bhai has big movies slated for next year. We’ll also have to keep the schedule of performers in mind. Besides the five cities in India, we will travel to South Africa, US and UK next year. We should be able to cover the foreign locations in 10 days, followed by a fortnight in India. If all goes as planned, we should be able to wrap the tour by March 2017,” says Sohail Khan.

How often have you discriminated against someone who couldn’t speak fluent English? Or how often have you been at the receiving end of the discrimination? As classist as it sounds, majority of educated Indians are guilty of this prejudice. We complain of racism abroad, but here in India we have practised it without batting an eyelid.

AIB's New Sketch On How You're Judged Because Of Poor English© YouTube

From how someone is dressed to their fluency in the English language, we judge people at the drop of a hat. This prejudice has been institutionalized to the extent that it affects how easily you get a job and even how well you get paid. It’s there in corporate boardrooms, in branded showrooms, in parties and malls.

There are thousands of students from small towns and humble family backgrounds who strive with limited means to get into engineering colleges. And they do. In fact, they excel. Hundreds of IITians and aspiring doctors are from humble families living on bare minimum incomes.

AIB’s latest sketch on the discrimination faced by young engineering candidates hailing from humble backgrounds nails the cultural hypocrisy we practice. As honest as it gets, the guy loses his cool when the interviewer focuses on his English rather than his engineering skills.

Let’s face it – the person who lacks fluency in English is at a disadvantage, especially professionally. Of course, English is a link language and we have to be proficient in it to expose ourselves to global learning. One can’t afford to stay ignorant of what’s happening in the world. But the problem arises when discrimination happens because of diction and spoken English. One might be a scholar who could write impeccable English but still face a problem with today’s stylized slang-heavy English.

While it’s understandable if social circles are different on the basis of mutual tastes and preferences, it is not acceptable when people are put down because of that, especially in workspace.

Northwest, central India set to experience another wet weekend New Delhi: Northwest and central parts of the country are set to experience yet another wet spell this weekend making it the wettest February for the region.

Northwest, central India set to experience another wet weekend

The weatherman has attributed the unseasonal rains to a fresh extra-tropical weather system and its induced low pressure area that would affect western Himalayan region, northwest and adjoining central India.

Besides Delhi, the system is expected to bring rain to many parts of north Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh.

“The rainfall over Delhi is likely to begin on the early morning of 23rd and continue till the next morning,” the India Meteorological Department said in a statement.

The weatherman has advised farmers in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh withhold the irrigation in their fields.

Parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are expected to get heavy to moderate rain or snowfall between February 21 and 24.

Northwest, central India set to experience another wet weekend

This would be the third spell of rains due to an extra-tropical weather system, commonly called as western disturbance, to affect the north-west India since the beginning of this month.

The weatherman said such systems are not uncommon in February and normally five western disturbances affect the region during the month.

LoC incidents won`t affect peace process: Khurshid Jaipur: Welcoming the “positive statements” coming from Pakistan for talks to de-escalate tensions along the border, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Friday said the recent incidents won’t affect the peace process between the two countries.

“There is a positive content in the statement that has come from Pakistan foreign minister and high commissioner to India. It is welcome and it should be getting an appropriate response from our side,” Khurshid told reporters here.

LoC incidents won`t affect peace process: Khurshid

He said the matter will come up for discussion at the three-day Congress Chintan Shivir here.

“Peace process is not going to be undermined by these incidents. We hope that we will find a resolution to all these matters and we have treated the whole issue with great care and the closest attention possible,” Khurshid said.

“Peace process is something in which we have invested a lot…and it was done because it is strategically and tactically important for India’s role in the world,” he said.

On the talks offer by Pakistan, Khurshid said: “We are trying to work on it and the prime minister has been trying to ensure things remain in control and our concerns are addressed and situation doesn’t deteriorate. All these things have to be kept in mind.”

LoC incidents won`t affect peace process: Khurshid

Khurshid had on Thursday declined to commit himself to accepting Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar’s offer for bilateral talks, saying that India cannot move forward for talks just on the basis of “one statement”.

Ties between the two neighbours have been strained ever since the January 06 killing of a Pakistani soldier allegedly in firing by Indian troops.

Two days later, Pakistani soldiers brutally killed two Indian soldiers, including beheading one of them, near the LoC.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who stoked a controversy a few days ago saying that rapes do not take place in rural but urban India, has created a fresh row now with remarks that a woman is bound by contract to husband to look after him.

“A husband and wife are involved in a contract under which the husband has said that you should take care of my house and I will take care of all your needs. I will keep you safe.

“So, the husband follows the contract terms. Till the time, the wife follows the contract, the husband stays with her, if the wife violates the contract, he can disown her,” Bhagwat told a rally in Indore on Saturday.

Reacting sharply to Bhagwat’s comment, CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said, “I don’ think it is really surprising because at the end of the day, this is what RSS is. That is why I think it is the retrogade ‘samiti’ of India. These were the regents who when BJP was in power wanted a new Constitution of India based on ‘manushriti’. So when he talks in this language, he only reflects his ideology.” The RSS chief had created a flutter last week when he had said in Silchar in Assam that rape is mainly prevalent in urban India due to western influence and that such crimes against women do not happen in rural areas of the country.

Protest against Bhagwat

Youth Congress activists burn an effigy of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to protest against his remark on rapes in India, in Bhopal.

The remark that came against the backdrop of the Delhi gangrape incident was slammed by Congress, CPI-M and women’s bodies while BJP and RSS defended it saying the comment should be taken in proper perspective.

Bhagwat had claimed that the incidents of rape were the result of adoption of western culture in society as a whole and that erosion of traditional Indian values were more pronounced in urban areas.

“Crimes against women happening in urban India are shameful. It is a dangerous trend. But such crimes won’t happen in Bharat or the rural areas of the country. You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gangrape or sex crimes,” he had said.

“Where ‘Bharat’ becomes ‘India’ with the influence of western culture, these type of incidents happen. The actual Indian values and culture should be established at every stratum of society where women are treated as ‘mother’,” Bhagwat had said, demanding that the government take appropriate action to stop rape incidents and RSS will support any government initiative to change existing laws.

On the RSS chief’s husband-wife contract remark, Karat said, “I don’t know if he knows this but in India on the basis of caste system, we have the worst kind of oppression of Dalit and adivasi women.

“When these people talk about ‘Hindu Rashtra’ and Hindutva, it is based on this highly casteist, partriarchal framework and that is why I think what RSS spokesmen are saying reflect their inner thoughts,” she said, adding, “Because they believe women are subordinate to men and women are appendages to men.” RSS spokesman Ram Madhav said the projection of Bhagwat’s views on the marriage system in the Indian context is “totally false”.

“It is totally falsifying his views. He said the western marriage system is contractual where a man and a woman consider marriage as a contract whereas he also went on to say that Indian marriage system is a very sacred institution.

“In this, the woman has a place of great respect and the man has certain obligations towards the family and the way the whole thing was projected was as though Bhagwat was calling Indian marriage contractual. This is total distortion of what he has said,” according to Madhav.

On Bhagwat’s comment on the rape issue, Karat had then said, “Bhagwat neither understands India nor Bharat.” She had said government statistics of atrocities on women and sexual assault showed that the maximum number of victims belong to the poor, Dalit and tribal communities.

National Commission of Women(NCW) Chief Mamta Sharma had said Bhagwat should stop differentiating in terms of geography.

“We are all Indians. We are all citizens of India…Go to grassroots level and see what is the condition of the women there,” she had said.

However, Madhav had said the RSS chief’s statement should be taken in proper perspective.

“He has condemned the heinous crime of assaulting women, rape against women and he said it is an utterly wrong thing and that people who indulge in such things must be punished,” he added.

New Delhi, Dec 18: Condemning the gang rape of a 23-year-old girl in the capital, Bollywood star Salman Khan Tuesday said rapists should be hanged.

“In my view, there should be a death sentence for all rapists. Such things have no role in our life. I feel disgusted after hearing such things. For me, this is a third grade crime. I also believe that there should be a norm that if a rapist goes to jail, he should be beaten till death,” said the 46-year-old.

The brutal rape and torture took place Sunday night when the woman along with her male friend boarded a private bus at Munirka to go to Dwarka after watching a movie.

The woman was beaten up, stripped and raped by at least seven men who were inside the bus. Both the woman and her male friend, who was also beaten up when he resisted, were thrown off the bus near Mahipalpur.

Salman feels people should have zero tolerance for such crime and that they should try to stop it if they come across any such incident.

“I think Indian society needs to be ‘dabang’ (bold) in their approach. I recently read a news where a girl was being molested and people standing nearby were making videos on their phones. This is not the real India and I don’t think if such incidents can ever happen in front of my eyes,” he added.

The actor was in the capital Tuesday to promote his upcoming film “Dabangg 2”, a sequel to 2010 hit “Dabangg”.

“Dabangg 2” releases Friday.

Sachin TendulkarThe fourth and the final Test match between India and England being played at Nagpur ended in a draw. England won the series 2-1 and ended their 28 years old draught. Looking back at the series it will be fair to say that England were the better side out of the two and deserved to win the match.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni after the match said that the better team won. He also noted the fact that England was well balanced and won precious moments of the series.

No one could have predicted the result after what happened in Ahmedabad. But the English side showed why they are such a force in Test cricket. They played some incredible cricket to win the next two Tests of the series. Even in this match, England played very well to secure a draw and ensured that there was no coming back for the home team.

So, the embarrassment continues for MS Dhoni and his men. Indian team have to go under a reality check after this result because the team looks to have more problems than answers.

Let’s now have a look at some of the hits and flops from both teams in the Nagpur Test:

India:

Hits:

Virat Kohli: Kohli was struggling in the series and questions were asked about his temperament for the longer version of the game. Kohli needed a big innings and that’s exactly what he came up with. He came at a time when India lost two quick wickets. Soon he lost Gambhir at the other end but that had no effect on him. He played a brilliant knock and added crucial runs with his skipper. Kohli scored a century under most testing conditions and it was his longest innings in terms of ball faced.

MS Dhoni with the bat: Dhoni was under tremendous pressure before the Test started and needed runs desperately. He came up with a solid 99 and that would keep his critics who doubted his place in the team at bay for some time. Like Kohli it was Dhoni’s longest innings in terms of time spent on the crease. He was unlucky not to have got to a century.

Flops:

Sachin Tendulkar: The master failed again! Sachin was in desperate needs of some runs but got out to a brilliant ball. Sachin has never been under so much pressure and it seems to have a massive influence on his batting. Sachin once again looked circumspect at the crease and that cost him his wicket in the end.

R Ashwin: He has been one of the biggest disappointments of the series for India with the ball. Ashwin’s job is to pick wickets and he completely failed at that. He took only one wicket in the first innings and was very lucky to get two wickets in the second innings. He was brilliant with the bat in the series but he is in the team for his bowling.

MS Dhoni as a captain: Dhoni was impressive in England’s first innings and handled his resources pretty well. He came up with a brilliant innings with the bat, but failed as a captain at the most crucial time. India’s only chance of winnings was to get England out in the second innings. It is true that the pitch had nothing but Dhoni once again waited for something to happen rather than trying to make things happen. Indian team’s approach in the first hour’s play on day four surprised everyone and Dhoni will have to take the blame for the humiliating series loss.

England:

Hits:

Jonathan Trott: Trott has been wonderful for England in the recent time, but struggled in the series. He played a good innings in Kolkata but everyone expected a big innings from him. Trott came up with a series winning hundred for his team. He got out after getting a start in the first innings but ensured that he crossed the three figure mark in the second.

Joe Root: It was a brave move from the team management to bring in a debutant opener to play in the middle-order in what was a very important game for England. Root had a massive test and he cleared it with flying colors. His partnership with Matt Prior in the first innings took England out from a losing position and he can be very proud of his performance.

Matt Prior: His contributions might go unnoticed but he was a game changer for England in this series. Prior has a habit of scoring important runs and he did that in this match. His fifty in the first innings was very important and the confidence he showed certainly helped the youngster at the other end.

James Anderson: It was a treat to watch Anderson bowl in the past couple of matches. Anderson had a bad first Test but came back strongly after that. His spell with the old ball when he picked the wickets of Sachin and Gambhir was phenomenal. Indian captain went to the extent of saying that Anderson was the main difference between the two sides.

Ian Bell: Before the second innings of this Test, Bell looked completely out of sorts. But like every good player he delivered when it was most important. Along with Trott he put up a series winning partnership. He made a brilliant 116 not out.
