Mohun Bagan`s next I-League match deferredNew Delhi: Mohun Bagan`s I-League match against Pailan Arrows, scheduled to be held on Saturday, has been deferred in view of the controversy over the green-and-maroon brigade`s walkout after half time in the derby against East Bengal.

“The decision regarding the status and necessary actions arising under the I-League Regulations regarding the match played on December 9, 2012 between Kingfisher East Bengal and McDowell Mohun Bagan is under consideration. Hence, the scheduled Match No. 72 between McDowell Mohun Bagan and Pailan Arrows to be played on December 15, 2012 stays deferred till further notice,” the AIFF said in a statement today.

The mecca of Indian soccer Kolkata had, on Sunday, made headlines when the marquee clash at the Salt Lake stadium had to be called off after Mohun Bagan refused to play the second half after their key player, Syed Rahim Nabi, sustained facial injuries.

Trailing 0-1 at the break, they cited “security concerns” as the reason for not turning up for the second half.

Under Clause 22 of the AIFF Constitution, the club stands to banned for two years.

Stand-off between IOC & IOA is more of a legal argument: AnandNew Delhi: Chess legend Vishwanathan Anand is not too concerned about the suspension imposed on the IOA by International Olympic Committee as he feels the ongoing dispute is “more of a legal argument” which can be sorted out in due course of time.

The World Champion heaved a sigh of relief about the fact that there isn`t many international sporting activities lined up for Indian athletes in the upcoming months, which means all the concerned parties will get ample time to sort out the issue.

“It`s good that it (the suspension) happened after the (London) Olympics. Frankly speaking, I am not too worried because there are solutions for Indian athletes even if the suspension remains. If they are good enough, they can compete under the IOC flag,” Anand said here today.

“Next Olympics is three years away and there is plenty of time for the next Asian Games also. So, there is time to fix the issue which is more of legal argument. It can be managed.

“So, let`s not lose the focus on the training of the athletes and what organisations like Olympic Gold Quest are doing for Indian athletes,” he added.

Talking about his next year`s plans, Anand, who won the `CNN-IBN Indian of the Year` Award this year for successfully defending his world champion crown since 2007, said: “I have a lot of tournaments lined up in the first half of the year.

“I have a full calendar till June. In general, I want to play well and a lot of chess this year because last year I player very little,” he said.

London Olympics bronze medallist woman boxer, M C Mary Kom too hope that the stand-off between IOC and IOA will sorted out soon for the betterment of Indian atheltes who, accorring to her, are the real sufferers.

“I am really worried and upset. As a sportsperson, you don`t want these issues because an athlete can concentrate on his or her training,” said, Mary Kom, who won the sopecial achievement award.

“I hope higher authorities will bring an early and good solution to this problem.”

UK: Family suspects `foul play` in Indian nurse`s death Bangalore: British authorities will conduct a postmortem and an inquest into the mysterious death of Indian nurse Jacintha Saldhana in London, but her family in Karnataka suspects “foul play” and wants an independent inquiry into the tragic episode.

“Jacintha’s grieving family is anxiously waiting for the postmortem report and the outcome of the inquest by the Scotland Yard, because they suspect foul play in her tragic death as she was a strong woman and would not have resorted to such an act (suicide),” her family’s close friend Ivan D’Souza told a news agewncy Tuesday from Mangalore, about 350 km from Bangalore.

In the absence of details or more information on the incident from Jacintha’s husband Benedict Barboza from London, members of both the families have been avoiding media as they are in a state of mourning.

“They are too shocked to say anything to the media and are more worried on how Benedict and his two kids are coping with the tragedy in Bristol, where they reside. “Am told Benedict was allowed to see Jacintha’s body Monday at the King Edward VII Hospital in central London,” said D’Souza, general secretary of the opposition Congress in the state and a neighbour of Jacintha’s family in Mangalore.

Barboza’s family, however, lives at Shirva, about 60 km from Mangalore and 400 km from Bangalore.

UK: Family suspects `foul play` in Indian nurse`s death

D’Souza met Barboza’s family members at Shirva along with former party MP Vinay Kumar Sorake to condole Jacintha’s death and enquire about their welfare.

According to Jacintha’s brother Naveen Saldhana, the family is waiting for the arrival of the body in Mangalore, with Benedict and his two children Junal, 16, and Lisha, 14, for the last rites that will be performed at Shirva as per the Catholic tradition.

“The family is expecting the British authorities to hand over Jacintha’s body to Benedict either Tuesday or Wednesday so that he could fly to Mangalore via Mumbai on the same day or Thursday for the last rites Friday.

“It depends on how long the postmortem and inquest would take and when Benedict would get the flight to Mumbai and a connecting flight to Mangalore,” D’Souza noted.

The family members are also mulling over seeking a second postmortem in India if they and Benedict are not satisfied with the inquest outcome in London.

UK: Family suspects `foul play` in Indian nurse`s death

“As Indian laws are applicable even in Britain, the family members are thinking of asking for a second postmortem under section 154 of the Indian Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 if they are not convinced about the exact cause of Jacintha’s death, being investigated by the Scotland Yard,” D’Souza asserted.

Saldhana was found unconscious Dec 7 in the quarters of the hospital in central London where she was working as a senior nurse, and was pronounced dead when wheeled into the hospital in an ambulance.

“I have known and seen Jacintha when ever she visited Mangalore over the years as her family members, including mother, a sister and a brother reside next door. She was a pleasant lady and warm with friends and relatives,” D’Souza recalled.

Jacintha, 46, who graduated from Father Muller College of Nursing in Mangalore in the mid-1980s, first worked at Muscat (Oman) for a few years and went to London after marriage 15 years ago to live with Barboza, an accountant in the British National Health Service at Bristol, 190 km from London.

“We didn’t even know that Jacintha got unwittingly involved in the hoax call though we read something about it in newspapers last week that there was a prank call to the hospital from a radio station in Australia, whose jockeys tried to know about the princess’s ( Kate Middleton) health by imitating the voice of the queen (Elizabeth) and prince (Charles),” Jacintha’s nephew said but declined to be named.

Dropping non-performers is correct decisionRajkot: Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Tuesday backed the selectors` decision to drop Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh from the team for the fourth and final Test against England but is hopeful that both will make a comeback in the squad.

“The selectors` decision to keep non-performing players out of the team is proper,” the former skipper told reporters when asked about the axing of the off-spinner and the stylish batsman.

“Not only these two but all those who are not performing should be rested,” he said.

The cricketer-turned-politician, who is currently a Congress MP, was here to campaign for his party in the Gujarat Assembly election.

He, however, said Harbhajan and Yuvraj are good players and they would surely come back in Team India. “They have plenty of cricket left in them and would surely come back in the national side.”

Asked about Sachin Tendulkar`s retirement, Azharuddin said “Sachin is a great player and let him and selectors decide about his future.”

“The selection committee is the proper body to decide about who should play and who should retire,” said the veteran of 99 Tests and 334 ODIs.
