Pak Minister Rehman Malik retracts statement on 26/11, says time has come to ‘move ahead’

Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Saturday denied he had equated the demolition of the Babri Masjid with terror attacks, and offered an assurance that he would get the death of Kargil martyr Captain Saurabh Kalia investigated.

Explaining comments he made after landing in New Delhi Friday evening, which were widely reported by the Indian media, Malik told NDTV news channel that he “had never compared” terror attacks with the Dec 6, 1992 mosque demolition.

“I am here with a message of love and peace, and both countries are working on a roadmap of peace and love, there is no option,” the Pakistani interior minister told the news channel.

“When I spoke of Babri, I never compared it with terror acts,” he said, adding: “What I said is that we do not want ugly incidents… Never made such a comparison,” Malik said.

Malik had said Friday: “Terrorism brings grief, we do not want a 9/11, Bombay blast, Samjhauta Express blast, Babri Mosque demolition.”

On his remarks on Kalia, Malik said: “My full sympathies are with the family… Since the matter concerns the ministry of defence, I will take the information and have it investigated… The cause of death is not yet determined. If he was tortured, how could you expect that we would give such a body (back), knowing the reaction it would elicit.”

He also said that India had “never raised with Pakistan in any way” the issue of Kalia’s death and it was not part of his agenda in India this time.

He accused the media of creating the agenda for the India-Pakistan talks, terming it “not fair”.

Clarifying his remarks Friday on Kalia that were interpreted as dismissive, Malik said he had been “totally misquoted” and that he did not know “too much of the incident”.

“I am not a master computer,” Malik said.

Capt Saurabh Kalia’s mutilated and tortured body had been handed over to India after the 1999 Kargil conflict. Kalia’s father has taken his son’s torture-killing to the Supreme Court, saying Pakistan should be told to apologise. He has also approached the UN Human Rights Commission asking it to probe his son’s death as a war crime.

Asked about it, Malik had said Friday: “When a fight is going on at the border, we really don’t know whether he was killed with a Pakistani bullet or he died because of the weather.”

I&B Minister Manish Tewari took on Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, calling the latter immature for raking up the Sir Creek issue at a time when the state is in the middle of a hotly contested election and the Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik is in India.

Tewari went on to say, “we don’t need a certificate from Modi on our nationalism credentials. There can be nothing more immature than bringing up the Sir Creek issue at this time.”

The Congress is accusing Modi of politicising the Sir Creek issue and chose to point out that it was Vajpayee who is responsible for the current status quo. Manish Tewari even said that Modi has no right to speak on the issue as what was he doing when the NDA was in power.

Terming Modi’s comments irresponsible, Tewari accused him of trying to milk political mileage by raising the spectre of security concerns.

After being on the run for four months in an alleged illegal granite quarrying scam, Union Minister M K Alagiri’s son Durai Dayanidhi surrendered before a court at nearby Melur on Friday, four days after he was granted anticipatory bail by the High Court.

Accompanied by a battery of advocates and DMK workers, he paid a personal security of Rs 10,000, while two persons stood as personal surety, at the court of Judicial Magistrate Jaykumar here in the southern Indian city.

The court directed him to appear daily from Saturday until further orders before Keezhavalavur Police station near Melur, which had registerd cases against him under various IPC sections, including 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 447 (criminal trespass) and 420 (cheating), for allegedly quarrying illegally on government land.

Dayanidhi and 14 others got bail in the multicrore granite quarrying scam, in which owners of various granite firms, including Olympus Granites in which he is a partner, had been named as accused.

The scam came to light when former Madurai Collector U Sagayam held an inquiry and submitted a report to the government, stating that illegal quarrying had cost the exchequer a loss of over Rs 16,000 crore.

Cases were registered based on complaints from Village administrative officers (VAOs) of Melur and keezhavalavu stations.

The VAOs had accused Dayanidhi and another partner Nagarajan of encroaching on land adjacent to the permitted area and causing loss of Rs 440 crore.

On December 10, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court had quashed a non-bailable arrest warrant issued by a lower court against Dayanidhi and granted him anticipatory bail.

Police had formed a special team to look out for Dayanidhi and alerted immigration authorities to help them in preventing him and other accused from leaving the country.

Various other granite firms also have faced the heat of the Government crackdown following the findings by Sagayam.

Indian-origin nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who was found hanging at her official accommodation at a London hospital recently, had apparently left three suicide notes.

One of these notes criticised the hospital staff, details accessed by Headlines Today revealed.

The 46-year-old senior nurse was on December 7 found hanging from a wardrobe in her apartment on the premises of King Edward VII Hospital, where she worked.

She had allegedly committed suicide after a prank call from two Australian radio presenters, who pretended to be the Queen and Prince Charles enquiring about the condition of Kate, who is pregnant and was undergoing treatment in the hospital for morning sickness.

One of the suicide notes has been addressed to the hospital management that also criticises some staffers. Another note talks about the prank call made by the Australian presenters.

In the other suicide note Saldanha has requested for her funeral.

While two notes lied at the spot, another one was later found from Saldanha’s belongings. Her family has been given typed copies of the three handwritten notes by the police.

On Thursday, findings of the autopsy on her body were revealed to the Westminster coroner at the formal opening of the inquest. It said that the woman was found hanging in her apartment and there were injuries on her wrists.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday assured the state legislature that the state will not allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail sector .

Chandy made the announcement in response to notice for an adjournment motion given by the opposition Left Democratic Front in the assembly. He said he had received nod from Congress high command for taking such a decision in the issue.

Chandy said it was true that MPs of Congress and allies from Kerala had voted in Parliament for allowing FDI in retailing . But this was following whip from party leadership.

He said Congress MPs from the state will follow party leadership’s decisions. But we had got exemption regarding implementing it in the state, he added. The current decision won’t be revoked even during the remaining years of UDF government in the state, the Chief Minister asserted.

The opposition had given notice for discussing the problems faced by traditional industries in Kerala including coir, cashew, fisheries, textiles and beedi in the light of nod for FDI in retailing. CPI (M) MLA P.K Gurudasan served the notice.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition V S Achuthanandan demanded that it should be investigated if any MP from Kerala had received benefits for allowing FDI in retailing in the country. He raised this allegation in the light of the disclosure of Walmart that it had spent a huge sum for lobbying for enhanced market access in India.

Achuthanandan’s remarks created uproarious scenes in the assembly and later he withdrew it.

Yasin Malik says Afzal Guru shouldn’t be hanged as he did not attack Parliament himself

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik on Thursday said that Parliament attack conspirator Afzal Guru should not be hanged because he was not directly involved in it. Malik’s statement comes amid uproar in Parliament over the issue as the nation observed the 11th anniversary of the daring terror attack. Guru has been sentenced to death for masterminding the terror attack that took place on December 13, 2001. Last month also Malik had cautioned the government against hanging Guru, saying it would have disastrous consequences for the entire region and pave the way for return of violence to Jammu and Kashmir. State’s Independent MLA Engineer Rasheed also said that Guru should not be hanged as it would create a law and order problem in the state. Earlier in the day, Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma also made a controversial statement and advocated commuting Guru’s death sentence to life imprisonment. However, he later retracted the statement after being criticised by various parties, including the Congress. The BJP demanded in Parliament that the government announce the date of hanging Guru at the earliest. His mercy petition has been pending with the President for years, as the government has been finding it difficult to take a decision on it. The demand for his hanging intensified after the secret hanging of 26/11 attacker Ajmal Amir Kasab last month.
