In a candid conversation with mid-day online, Urvashi Rautela speaks about the preparations she underwent for her upcoming film Hate Story IV and how it is not merely an erotica

Urvashi Rautela
Urvashi Rautela’s look from the film Hate Story IV.

Urvashi Rautela, who blew everyone’s mind with her amazing dance moves in the song Haseeno Ka Deewana, has bounced back with some exceptionally dance forms in her upcoming thriller film, Hate Story 4. Talking to mid-day online about how Hate Story 4 is a woman-centric film and how its release date around women’s day is apt, a cheerful Urvashi Rautela spills the beans about the film being more than just an erotica.

Read the excerpts here:

Why did you sign Hate Story IV?
The only reason I signed Hate Story IV was purely because I loved my character Tasha in it. I think it was tailor-made for me and the entire script. Tasha is a big supermodel and I really loved the amalgamation of two different worlds in it. First, that she was very strong, confident and fearless but on the other hand, she is very vulnerable, soft and real. I really loved the entire team and Tseries is my family, working with them, again and again, feels home and also my director Vishal Pandya. These are the reasons why I signed the film.

What attracted you towards this role?
Different kinds of roles and that’s what the actors should be focussing on doing variety and playing different roles. And it was Tasha’s supermodel character that attracted me towards this role. I had to do a lot of preparation to do for this character. I’ve been a teen supermodel in my real life. So, that was something that came naturally to me. Also, apart from that, there were certain characteristics of Tasha which were completely different from my real personality. Therefore, there was a lot of underground research that I had to do for this role along with mental and physical preparation. It was not that easy because it is definitely the most exhausting role of my career. We have had a lot of emotional breakdown scenes. There was a lot of hate responsibility.

What kind of responses are you receiving for Hate Story IV?
We are receiving a very positive and amazing kind of responses for the film. People have loved it and they have appreciated it. We have crossed more than 40 million views on the film’s trailer and also on the Aashiq Banaya Aapne track. It makes me really happy when people are really complimenting about Tasha and that’s what I want. The biggest highlight was my (Tasha’s) end walk in the trailer, where I am folding up my sleeves and just walking. So, I think that’s the major highlight and people are really appreciating about that part from the trailer.

After being applauded for your Kaabil dance numbers, would you take up item numbers in films?
I did that only because of Hrithik Roshan and Rakesh Roshan. They really liked me for Haseeno Ka Deewana and I was very well appreciated for that. After that, I got a lot of big opportunities but I haven’t thought about it much but definitely, I am happy in my own movies that I have done. Aashiq Banaya Aapne song and Naam Hai Mera songs from Hate Story IV are also dance numbers. I did Haseeno Ka Deewana only and only because of Hrithik Roshan.

Aren’t you afraid of being stereotyped in the business?
I am very positive and blessed to be doing a variety of roles in my films. Like in my first film, Singh Saab the Great, I played the role of a simple Punjabi kudi and in my second film, I play a socialite. I wanted to take that glamorous role because I had played a de-glam role in my debut film. That’s the reason I did Socialite. In my third film, I played the role of a ghost and in my fourth one, I am playing a supermodel. So, I am glad that directors have always perceived me in different kinds of roles and this is something which really makes me happy. I want to continue doing this.

Also, we have women’s day on March 8, any message that you want to give them?
I always believe in celebrating women’s day, and it’s such a great time that we have a female-centric film also releasing around the same time. I am really happy that our movie is releasing around women’s day because the film is about women and Tasha is the real hero of the film. That way I think everything is happening according to God’s perfect timing.

What are your upcoming projects?
I have promised myself that I will not talk about my upcoming projects until March 9, 2018.

What kind of a rapport have you built with your co-stars?
With all my co-stars, I make sure that we have a friendly relation and with both of my co-actors Vivan Bhatena and Karan Wahi, the experience has been really great. They were really supportive and are both great actors. It was a fun time shooting with them. As an actor, I have always believed in doing something new.

Tell us something about the reprised song versions of the film and your dance in it.
For instance, when I got to know about Aashiq Banaya Aapne music, I was very sure that I want to do something very different, like how I do eleven different dance forms from Bharatnatyam to hip-hop, Kathak, jazz, ballad, belly dance. I have done heels choreography in this song and no one India has ever done it, Yanis Marshall does it in Hollywood. I’m really glad that people are loving it. Heels choreography is not as easy as it looks. It’s done by wearing five inch-heels to maintain your centre of gravity and balance. Slowly, people are really complimenting heels choreography. In the other song, Naam Hai Mera, which was a sudden incorporation in the film and I have done a new different choreography waacking. It is a form of expression of dance in which we use our arms. It’s a new different thing for all my fans and Hate Story lovers.

Are you happy with the way your career is being shaped up or the kinds of films you’re being offered?
I’ve grown up watching a lot of Jennifer Lawrence’s work. I really loved her character in the film Joy, where she played a very strong role and those were female-centric films and also watching Gal Gadot and Wonder woman, she’s also Miss Universe’s royal. So, watching a lot of female-centric films, I had a dream of being in a female-centric film and I think Hate Story IV is my women-centric film and Tasha is the real hero of the entire story. So, in that case, yes, I always wanted to do a female-centric film and I really think that though it’s very early for me, I’m very happy but also nervous at the same time.

Actor Terry Crews’ sexual assault case against WME agent Adam Venit has been rejected by The Los Angeles County District Attorney and the Los Angeles City Attorney

Actor Terry Crews’ sexual assault case against WME agent Adam Venit has been rejected by The Los Angeles County District Attorney and the Los Angeles City Attorney. According to court documents obtained by eonline.com, the District Attorney argued that Venit’s conduct did not rise to the level of a felony.

“Given that the suspect did not make contact with the victim’s skin when he grabbed the victim’s genitals and there is no restraint involved, a felony filing is declined,” the document stated.

As for the city attorney, they had to reject the case due to statute of limitations. The incident occurred in February 2016 and the statute for a misdemeanour is one year. In October 2017, Crews initially came forward with sexual assault allegations against an unnamed Hollywood executive.

Two months later, the actor filed a lawsuit against Venit claiming the agent sexually assaulted him at a February 2016 party. While Venit was suspended from WME following an internal investigation into the matter, he returned to work after 30 days.

mid-day had earlier reported how Kangana Ranaut had requested Salman Khan to part with the title Mental since she was keen on naming her next so. Though that didn’t work out, producer Ekta Kapoor devised a way to get another title that she says is “more fitting” for the Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao-starrer – Mental Hai Kya.

Kapoor says that she wants to give a facelift to the thriller genre with this project. “This is one of my favourite scripts. We’ve tried to bend the genre by adding dollops of black humour to it. With the crazy looks, the aim is to redefine thrillers.”

The Prakash Kovelamudi-directed film sees Kapoor scoring a hat-trick with Kangana Ranaut and Rao. “I have worked with both of them before. Raj and Kangana teaming up together after Queen further adds to the excitement. They have always taken the road less travelled, and played characters that have been emotionally and physically challenging. As artistes, they are hungry for something different and I identify with this drive.”

To tackle gender inequality in industry, Priyanka Chopra’s production house encourages women to join workforce; promises them pay equity

Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra

Women's DayHaving noticed the gender inequality prevalent in Indian cinema, Priyanka Chopra and her mother Madhu Chopra have initiated changes in their production house, Purple Pebble Pictures. Insiders from the banner suggest that the duo is focusing on roping in more women artistes for their upcoming projects to create a gender-neutral workplace, with equal importance to pay parity.

In their bid to support pay equity, Priyanka Chopra‘s studio, Purple Pebble Pictures, has included a rider in the contracts of their artistes clearly stating that gender won’t be one of the determining factors in their remuneration. Madhu Chopra asserts that the inclusion of women in the production house isn’t restricted to direction or acting. “We have women story writers, directors and camera technicians. So in every aspect of filmmaking, we are encouraging women. Although I would reiterate that we give equal opportunity, there is a certain bias towards women at the moment because they are marginalised and we have to give them an additional push.”

Dr Madhu Chopra

Ask her about pay equity and she says that they are creating a set-up where lead actors of projects will be paid at par, irrespective of their gender. “The pay scale is determined by the merit, qualification and talent. So there are different parameters, but gender is definitely not one of them. We believe in gender equality and that applies to remuneration too.”

Priyanka is also keen on backing more women-oriented stories helmed by women filmmakers. While their recently wrapped-up film Firebrand has National Award winner Aruna Raje at the helm, the studio’s last offering — the Sikkimese film Pahuna: The Little Visitors — was directed by Paakhi Tyrewala. Madhu adds, “Female-centric stories make the most impact on people. Everyone knows that women are strong enough to be talked about. The impact that I am expecting [from these developments] is that women will rise from where they have been put and walk shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts.”

Censor board member, actress and activist Vani Tripathi Tikoo said that objectification of women in films must never be encouraged

Censor board member, actress and activist Vani Tripathi Tikoo said that objectification of women in films must never be encouraged. As a member of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), does she watch films from a woman’s point of view or in a strictly professional way?

Vani told IANS: “Women objectification is non-negotiable. No matter what, you cannot show vulgar and cheap elements of women on-screen in a film that is reaching out to thousands of people.

“Whether it is certifying or negotiating on the release of a film, the projection of emotions always depends on its intention — whether it is titillation, perversion or addressing a larger picture through the film.

“For instance, ‘NH10’, a film that shows violence, rape and it is full of gore. But the film addresses a larger issue, a slice of reality. Therefore, that film was released. However, in any film, if the gaze is of perversion, it is not acceptable. If the context of the narration of the film lends itself to explicit language, I will judge it in the context of the film.”

Citing examples of some other movies, she said “Whether it is ‘Pad Man’ or ‘Pink’, both the films are directed by men. Even though ‘Pad Man’ talks about menstruation, no point in the film would one feel uncomfortable or cheap. The same goes for ‘Pink’, where some of the dialogues are bold and made the audience think about the issue, but there is no vulgarity.”

Vani was present at the Ficci Frames 2018, where she was a part of a panel discussion on ‘Against all odds: Women leaders re-visit their journey’.

As violence against women continues to be on the rise, are powerful women in the country doing enough — or at least the expected — for the issue?

“I think women have so much to do, but they can only resolve an issue within the limitation of the given power, so please, before expecting, one should understand the position. Yes, the picture is changing, but from both sides — women participation is increasing at the workplace, and the same time, sexual violence is also increasing.

“While the expectation from a powerful woman is to give justice to all the women out there, we have to understand that it is not just about women standing for justice for women but for all, irrespective of gender. Unjust is unjust.”

She also believes women achievers must mentor more women to follow the path of empowerment.

“There was an education campaign that said, ‘Each one, teach one’. I would say, each one teach ten, so that the future generation will be inspired. That is when the change comes.”
