After starring in Ishq Ka Rang Safed that highlighted the plight of widows, Eisha Singh will play a character who has a strong opinion about ‘triple talaq’

After starring in “Ishq Ka Rang Safed” that highlighted the plight of widows, Eisha Singh will play a character who has a strong opinion about ‘triple talaq’. The young actress feels happy to get such “good offers”. In Zee TV’s new fiction show, “Ishq Subhan Allah”, the 19-year-old plays the role of Zara who is a well-educated young woman. She applies the teachings of Islam to a logical and liberal way of life.

Asked about picking shows with social messages, Eisha told IANS over phone from Mumbai: “In one show, I played a young widow. This show is about women empowerment. I am getting so many good offers. So, it is exciting to do such shows.” Apart from women empowerment, the show raises its voice against triple talaq. Scared of controversies?

“When it comes to religion, people get very sensitive but still we must know how to handle such subjects. Triple talaq is a sensitive topic. Our writers and makers of the show need to be careful. I am also careful enough and make sure that I don’t hurt anybody’s sentiments through my role,” she said. So far, it has been a learning experience for Eisha.

“I am learning Urdu. There are certain words that I had to repeat at least 30 to 40 times to pronounce them properly. I was born and brought up in a typical Hindu family, but the plus point is that I am from Bhopal so I am familiar with the culture,” she said. “I also learnt how to perform namaaz. Islam is such a beautiful religion,” she added.

But what’s her take on triple talaq? Should it be considered a punishable offence? “I will stick to my show. Like during ‘nikaah’, if you need a woman’s consent, then why not during divorce? They (men) don’t ask women. That is bad. If you talk about equality, both (men and women) should have a say in this and have equal rights,” she said.

She said the show is not a finite one but its longevity depends on the acceptance from the audience. “We will stick to our issue which is triple talaq and won’t divert just for TRPs,” she said.

It feels great to lend my voice to Tiger Shroff for the first time and I’m pretty certain the audience will relate to it. My combination with Mithoon has worked pretty well with Tum Mere Ho song and it is always a pleasure to work with such melodic composers.”

Ileana D’Cruz on why unlike Hollywood’s fierce lot, Bollywood’s leading ladies have shied away from MeToo revolution

Ileana D'Cruz
Ileana D’Cruz

From accusing heavyweights like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey of sexual misconduct to sparking off the MeToo movement — female actors in Hollywood have brought about a revolution in the past few months, as they broke their silence on sexual harassment. In sharp contrast, Bollywood has been a mute witness to it all — happy to diplomatically applaud their international counterparts for naming and shaming their sexual predators, but not quite ready to address the elephant in the room.

“Losing on films is only one of the fears,” says Ileana D’Cruz, as she tries to analyse why B-Town leading ladies haven’t spoken up about sexual harassment that is prevalent in the industry.

She opines that in a country where the audiences tend to idolise their on-screen heroes, it is not easy to raise your voice against them. “You have to understand that our country, to some extent, tends to worship a lot of actors. Firstly, the families get affected if you speak up. Secondly, the fans have built such an image of these actors that they can’t see them in a negative light.”

According to D’Cruz, what deters the female actors from taking the brave step of naming the perpetrators, is the fear of it backfiring. “Think about any of the male superstars in this country. If a girl accuses him, most fans will say, ‘I don’t believe her claims. There is something wrong with the girl’. It is easy to point fingers at a nobody than at somebody famous. There have been so many similar cases here. But no one will step out and talk about it because actresses fear that no one will support them.”

Having earlier admitted to being a victim of sexual harassment and eve-teasing, the actor reveals she has had to face disturbing episodes in her 12-year-long career in the movies too.

“I have been associated with people who have tried to harass me. They have tried to push themselves on me just because they are powerful. Situations like this are not easy to be in. You may think you can retaliate, but sometimes it is difficult to do that.”

Arora, on her part, is excited to be revisiting the mystery drama, which had set cash registers ringing when it released in 1964, to the big screen. She says, “This is our tribute to Manoj Kumar. Farah Khan, who worked with Sridevi and has now choreographed for Janhvi in “Dhadak”, feels it would be unfair to compare the newcomer with her mother

Farah Khan
Farah Khan

Farah Khan, who worked with Sridevi and has now choreographed for Janhvi in “Dhadak”, feels it would be unfair to compare the newcomer with her mother. Farah believes every actor has a different approach towards the craft and their individuality should be respected. “Janhvi is absolutely lovely and she is a very good dancer. She picks up really fast and to compare her to her mother is the most unfair thing I think because Sri by her age was already a veteran and this is Janhvi’s first film. “I love Sri. When I started my career, she really pushed me and I used to do all her shows. But everybody is (a different) individual,” Farah told PTI.

Sridevi, who started film career at the age of four, died of accidental drowning in Dubai last month. She was 54. Farah has recreated the popular track “Zingat” from blockbuster Marathi film “Sairat” for the Hindi remake version of Karan Johar produced “Dhadak”, that marks the acting debut of Jahnvi and Shahid Kapoor’s half brother Ishaan Khatter.
“What happened was when they asked me to do it (recreate the song) for the Hindi version, I was given two briefs. The director (Shashank Khaitan) wanted it like it was done in the earlier movie, very casual, very organic and Karan wanted it to be a big song.”

Farah, who is known for her commercial sensibilities, believes a well-told story is more important than a boring “pseudo intellectual cinema”. “This year I have really enjoyed watching ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ which I thought was not only saying something but it was also very entertaining. Then, of course, you have Rajkummar’s ‘Newton’ and I think ‘Hindi medium’ was again saying a new story.”

Most of her directorial ventures have featured Shah Rukh Khan but the director said it took three years for the superstar to say yes “Main Hoo Naa”. “It was also a struggle because I was not making your typical so called women should direct only a certain type of movie. I wanted to make a big budget action movie which had drama in it. So I was not falling in that cliche of what people suppose women directors should be making. That itself was a struggle” she said.

The director-choreographer is one of the jury members for REEL movie awards honouring artistes who have entertained audiences with their creativity through excellent storytelling. Film critic-TV host Rajeev Masand will moderate the jury panel that also has names such as Sudhir Mishra, Sujoy Ghosh and Nikkhil Advani. The awards will be announced on March 20.

In an industry that ropes in multiple composers for its films’ soundtracks, these artistes are helming entire scores

Tanishk Bagchi

Given that a film’s soundtrack plays a vital role in determining its popularity, it’s common for filmmakers to rope in multiple composers to create songs of various genres, so that they can appeal to a diverse audience. However, resting the responsibility of composing the entire score on a single composer has its own benefits, especially when the narrative banks heavily on the music. Barring bigwigs like AR Rahman, Vishal-Shekhar and Pritam, few get the chance to helm the entire soundtrack. mid-day connects with those who prefer to fly solo.

Tanishk Bagchi
(Loveratri)
Tamma Tamma (Badrinath Ki Dulhania, 2017), Tu Cheez Badi (Machine, 2017), Mere Rashke Qamar (Baadshaho, 2017) and Hawa Hawai (Tumhari Sulu, 2017) hitmaker Tanishk Bagchi has his second solo project in his kitty, after previously helming the soundtrack of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017). “Ever since I started out, I wanted to do a solo film. Working as an independent composer is a great way to express your music, but it comes with many challenges,” says Bagchi, who will compose all the tracks for Salman Khan’s brother-in-law Aayush Sharma’s debut film, Loveratri. Bagchi says the greatest challenge for a solo composer is meeting deadlines. “The album takes longer to complete because one composer has to work on the songs for every mood, including romantic, sad and peppy.”

Superbia

Superbia
(Baa Baaa Black Sheep)
The music group comprising singer Shaan, and composers Gourov Dasgupta and Roshin Balu, has worked on the soundtrack of the Maniesh Paul-starrer, Baa Baaa Black Sheep. “The director [Vishwaas Paandya] didn’t want multiple composers on board. He also did not wish to pick songs from music banks. We enjoyed the process of creating original tracks to fit every situation,” says Shaan. Dasgupta adds, “These days, unless [a celebrated composer like] AR Rahman, Vishal-Shekhar or Pritam is involved in a project, it is rare for one composer to get the chance to work on the entire score. Vishwaas didn’t approach any other composer because we delivered what was expected of us.” Dasgupta likens the trend of approaching multiple composers for a film to “a shopping experience”. “The makers approach composers who specialise in a certain genre. For example, item song chahiye, to iske paas jaao, romantic song chahiye, to uske paas jaao. But, when one composer makes the soundtrack, s/he harbours an emotional attachment with the film.” Filmmakers, Dasgupta says, do not trust the younger crop of musicians enough to entrust them with the job of working on the entire score. “Of late, many solo composers have created terrible soundtracks.”

Jasleen Royal

Jasleen Royal
(Hichki)
Jasleen Royal, 26, has composed the soundtrack of Hichki, which marks her first outing as a solo composer. “When I met producers Aditya Chopra and Maneesh Sharma, I told them that after working on so many films, I wanted to do a solo album. They immediately agreed. They had immense faith in me. Since the music takes the film’s narrative forward, having multiple composers on board wouldn’t have worked anyway.” Working on an entire soundtrack is demanding, but it’s worth the toil, she says.

Mannan Shaah

Mannan Shaah
(Namastey England)
Mannan Shaah, who composed the soundtracks of Commando (2013) and Commando 2 (2017), is looking forward to working on the album of Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s Namastey England. “He [Shah] believed in my ability. He heard a few of my compositions, which I had worked on for Namaste England. He then asked me to go through the script and compose the entire album,” says Shaah. The nature of the script, he says, is the deciding factor for filmmakers when zeroing in on the need for one or many composers. “For a film like Namastey England, it was important that the music be consistent, and have an identity. Classics like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) are remembered for not only their scripts, but also their music. They’re solo-composer films.”
