Kareena Kapoor’s Pilates instructor Namrata Purohit on how the star shed 16 kilos to return to her svelte frame

Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor Khan wowed viewers by flaunting her svelte frame at a Singapore fashion event recently. However, walking the ramp for Manish Malhotra, the actor found herself battling criticism for having shed far too much weight than could have been appropriate. But the actor’s fitness trainer, Namrata Purohit, dismisses the suggestion that the actor has turned frail.

Kareena Kapoor

“The day we met, Kareena said she wants to be the fittest she has ever been,” Purohit tells mid-day. “She came to me 45 days after her son, Taimur, was born. She did not have a particular body size that she wanted to achieve. Kareena only wanted to be fit and flexible again. She has lost 16 kilos since we first started working out,” says Purohit, adding that the actor trained with her four times a week for an hour each day.

Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor has confessed her love for the fitness form, Pilates, with her graphic tees. Purohit says that the routine was essential since, after pregnancy, women can often lose control over their core muscles. “In Pilates, movement of the arms and legs are performed while keeping the core engaged. It was initially challenging for her to learn that, but she picked it up fast.”

Kapoor’s earnestness even earned her a special Pilates tee from Purohit. “I’m a tough one to please. The day she could co-ordinate every movement perfectly, I gave it to her.” Purohit adds that given that Kapoor had to shed her pregnancy weight, her routine focused on cardiovascular training. As for her diet, the new mommy followed a nutritious meal plan, but was permitted cheat days too. “I don’t believe in stringent dieting. Kareena is allowed to cheat whenever she wants.”

Richa Chadha has established a permanent place in Bollywood through non-conventional roles from portraying a hot-headed don in Fukrey to a small-town girl fighting taboos around sex in Masaan

Richa Chadha

Richa Chadha says a true feminism wave will arrive in Bollywood when better roles will be written for women. “Actresses are speaking up, which is a good thing because actresses are speaking up more than actors. But I don’t know whether there is a feminism wave in Bollywood (or not),” Richa told IANS.

“It will truly be amazing if better parts are written for women and better films are made with women and those films make money at the box office. Then we can truly say that it has arrived,” she added.

Richa has established a permanent place in Bollywood through non-conventional roles from portraying a hot-headed don in “Fukrey” to a small-town girl fighting taboos around sex in “Masaan”.

In fact, Richa is proud of her role as Bholi Punjaban in the “Fukrey” franchise. The second part of the franchise “Fukrey Returns”, which will premiere on the Indian small screen on Sunday on Zee Cinema, was also a hit. “The role helped me connect to a wider commercial audience. It was a good decision to do it. It is not an easy or a stereotypical character to play. It was the character a lot of people may or may not do especially in Bollywood because it is very risky…Taking the role was a calculated risk. I am happy,” she said.

Richa is hoping for the third part of the “Fukrey” franchise. “Third movie will happen, but director only knows when and what will the story,” she said.

In contention for Salman Khan’s next, Priyanka Chopra said to be keen to bow out of Quantico

Still from Quantico
Still from Quantico

She may have made a splash in the West courtesy her Alex Parrish act, but mid-day has it that Priyanka Chopra is considering opting out of Quantico – blame it on her love for Bollywood movies. The actor, who made a pit stop in India last week before flying out to Ireland for the drama’s third season shoot, went through a few Hindi film scripts. Salman Khan’s Bharat was apparently one of the few that caught her fancy.

Priyanka Chopra

Says a source, “Priyanka was quite taken by the script of Bharat. What also added to her excitement was that it would give her the chance to team up with Salman after a decade. But she’s not signed on the dotted line yet.”

However, if she gives her nod to this project, it’ll throw a spanner in the next season of Quantico. An insider suggests that Priyanka Chopra is not too keen on the cop drama having a fourth season. “Priyanka feels the show will lose steam if they continue with more seasons. Before pursuing any more international offers, she wants to do a Hindi film.”

Chopra is expected to return to India later this year after promoting the latest season of Quantico in the US. “Any clarity on Quantico’s next season will only come after the third season has been aired. She won’t say no to them if the next season is sanctioned, but she fears being repetitive,” adds the source. Chopra’s spokesperson refused to comment.

Gurmeet Choudhary on miscreant threatening to commit suicide over alleged non-payment of loan by the actor; lodges complaint

Gurmeet Choudhary
Gurmeet Choudhary

Actor Gurmeet Choudhary was taken off guard when he learnt that a person using the name Ankit Royal had threatened to kill himself due to the non-payment of a loan by the actor. Using the photo-sharing platform, Instagram, Royal had apparently claimed that he would kill himself in a live session on Facebook.

Choudhary, who filed a complaint at the Goregaon Police station on March 30, tells mid-day, “I am just worried. There is a feeling of uneasiness. The incident was brought to my notice by an event manager. Subsequently, I also started getting messages from fans on social media from across India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the USA. I realised this was something that needed my attention.”

While the actor, who is currently travelling due to work commitments, was unable to head to the police station, he submitted a hand-written complaint to the officials before his departure. “I hope the police take strict action against him. He has been tagging news channels, producers and directors, alleging that I owe him R11 lakh. I never thought somebody could pose such a threat to me. This stupidity won’t work with me.”

Are you an avid cinema lover? Think again before you read these lesser-known facts about these Hindi films from the 50s and 60s era

Do Ankhen Barah Haath

The 50’s and 60’s era of Hindi Cinema holds a special place in our hearts. The cinema of the 50s is marked with a distinct voice of the country just free from the clutches of a 200-year foreign rule. Spirits were running high and there was a taste of revolution in the air. These were the glorious years of some of the landmark films in history, which went ahead to gain national and international fame.

The two decades are a treasure trove of masterpieces by stalwarts whose names are forever etched in the history of the Hindi film industry. Be it the charismatic Dev Anand who serenaded his heroines with soulful songs, the enchantress Madhubala with the most beautiful smile that had many heroes forget lines for they couldn’t take their eyes off the celestial beauty or the ever romantic Guru Dutt whose cinematography made us watch films with a different lens. This, along with many more reasons why the 50s and 60s era of Hindi Films will inspire us till time immemorial. That’s why we call them Sadabahar.

While Sony MAX2 is commemorating the great talents of that era through Timeless Digital Awards season 3, it is pertinent to acknowledge the contribution of the movie marvels who gave birth to the many ‘firsts’ of Hindi Cinema, not only in India but also on the global platform.

Here is a list of 10 such facts that will make you extremely proud of the industry lineage.

1. Mughal-e-Azam’ was the first trilingual movie

Mughal-e-azam

This Bollywood epic was literally shot in 3 languages: English, Tamil, and Hindi! However, when the Tamil version failed, the English version was aborted too. Thus, only the Hindi version was released!

2. Sangam– The first movie to be shot abroad

Sangam

Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar and Vyjayanthimala’s triangle love story, Sangam had various scenes shot in Europe. The cinema lovers at that time turned up in large numbers to watch the movie just to see the foreign locales in a motion picture.

3. Mother India – India’s first Oscar submission

Mother India

The epic social drama starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, and Rajendra Kumar was India’s first submission for the Academy Awards in the foreign film category. The movie was not only nominated but also was in the final five. The Oscar jury strongly connected with the protagonist of the movie because of the storyline.

4. First Indian cinemascope film: Kaagaz Ke Phool

Kagaz ke Phool

India’s first cinemascope movie, Kaagaz Ke Phool is a masterpiece, much ahead of its time. This movie is considered as Guru Dutt’s finest film. But sadly, the film was a box office disaster and Guru Dutt never directed a movie again. Kaagaz Ke Phool is also said to be an autobiographical account of Dutt, highlighting his relationship with Waheeda and Geeta Dutt.

5. Yaadein (1964) – The first soliloquy of Hindi Cinema

Yaadein

Inspiration has a knack for striking on unexpected moments only to produce something so exceptional; it’s probably ahead of its time. And the most innovative film of Sunil Dutt’s creative career, Yaadein is an excellent example of this belief. Yaadein made it to Guinness Book of World Records under the category of ‘Fewest actors in a narrative film’, but it sadly didn’t work for the audience.

6. Pyaasa – The only Hindi film to make it to TIME’s ‘All-Time 100 Movies’ list and Sight & Sound’s ‘250 Greatest Films’ List

Pyaasa

Starring Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rahman and Mala Sinha, ‘Pyaasa’ trails the life of an unsuccessful poet in an unkind, frigid society. Recently, ‘Pyaasa’ became the first Indian film to be restored by an Indian company for screening at the Venice Film Festival.

7. Hanste Aansoo – First Indian film to receive an A-certificate

Hanste Aansoo

Hanste Aansoo featuring Madhubala and Motilal became the first film to receive ‘only for adults’ certification following the amendment of the original Indian Cinematograph Act (1918) in December 1949

8. Shree 420: Most successful foreign film at the Soviet box office

Shree 420

This cult movie featuring showman Raj Kapoor, Nargis and Nadira became the first foreign film to draw the audience of 35 million viewers at the Soviet box office.

9. Do Ankhen Barah Haath: First Indian film to win the Golden Globe Award

Do Ankhen Barah Haath

Directed by ace director V Shantaram, Do Ankhen Barah Haath was way ahead of its time. It became the first Hindi feature film to bag the prestigious Golden Globe award under the Samuel Goldwyn category

10. Awaara: “Awaara Hoon” was the first Indian song which became an international sensation

Aawara

The composition of “Awaara Hoon” by Shankar Jaikishan immediately struck a chord with audiences from various classes and backgrounds from across the globe. In fact, in May 2013 BBC poll, the song was rated the second-greatest Bollywood song of all time.
