Celebrating how his Assamese film underplays the sensitive topic of violence, Victor Banerjee says Hindi films have a lot to aspire to

Victor Banerjee in a still from Rainbow Fields
Victor Banerjee in a still from Rainbow Fields

Set in 1983, Victor Banerjee’s award-winning Assamese film, Rainbow Fields, depicts the trauma of children growing up during the Nellie massacre that took place in Assam. One might assume that exposing the child actors in the drama to sensitive topics like guns, killings and death, may have been difficult. But Banerjee suggests otherwise.

“When you belong to places like Assam, Nagaland or Mizoram, death has an entirely different significance, or insignificance, if you may. With this film, we’ve put out a story that’s natural for the people of that area. Since I grew up in the northeast, I have a great deal of sympathy for the way they feel, and the causes that they have been dying for,” Banerjee, who plays a grandfather to kids affected by the turmoil, tells mid-day.

Given that Victor Banerjee has been witness to the trauma that children growing up in the midst of violence endure, his casting in the project is fitting. He says that the Bidyut Kotoky-directed venture is special due to the manner in which the subject has been underplayed. “You won’t see much blood in the film, but there is a persistent undercurrent of violence that is bothersome.” It is the lack of dramatisation in films of this nature that make them better suited for European countries, says Banerjee. He adds that, in stark contrast, Bollywood lacks such sensitivity.

“I deeply despise Bollywood for what it has done to the Indian culture. I think a lot of the ‘moral values’ that we have and the way we perceive women has to do with Bollywood films. When my friends from international countries come here and watch a Bollywood film, they call our songs soft porn. Our tracks see our female actors in the skimpiest of clothes because that’s what the public wants,” says the actor, further criticising the industry for stereotyping characters. “The South Indians are showcased as one kind of clowns, the Goans are portrayed as another kind of clowns, and so are the Christians. That’s a disgrace.”

Bollywood, he says, can learn the art of appropriately showcasing culture on the big screen from other film industries. “[The Marathi film industry] writes stories from their literature. Their concepts replicate the feelings and attitude of their kind. So, people belonging to the culture identify with it immediately. Their films have a soul.”

Rainbow Fields, also starring Dipannita Sharma, is scheduled to hit screens later this month.

HichkiHichki movie still

Hichki
Drama; U/A
Director: Siddharth P Malhotra
Cast: Rani Mukerji, Neeraj Kabi
Rating: Rating

What kinda class 9 in a school has only one teacher, pretty much teaching them science and math, and nothing else—practically through the day—while the kids sit around being so obnoxious, that you wonder why they wake up in the morning, step outside, to reach that classroom in the first place.

These are poor, neighbourhood kids in a pretty swanky school, relegated to a special section F. Which is why the super-posh looking, senior teacher (Neeraj Kabi) can’t stand them? What follows in their syllabus, time-table, or life, as it were, are such predictable stuff—probably fed into a screen-writing software—that the F could simply stand for slightly Fake.

The teacher recruited to reform the unruly teenaged kids (some of whom have been cast quite well), is an enthu-cutlet, double B-Ed, suffering from Tourette Syndrome: a tic disorder that could cause sorts of involuntary motions in the body—blinking of the eye, coughing, throat clearing, sniffing, facial movements, etc.

All of which I have begun to learn only from Wikipedia, given the film, with its repeated explanation of there being momentary hiccups in the wiring of the brain, tells me nothing more; besides the heroine uncontrollably going, “Wah, wah, wah,” brushing her wrist against her throat. And sadly, making the audience laugh at her, on occasion (at least in my theatre), which defeats the whole purpose altogether.

Clearly, as against my expectations, this is not a film on the Tourette Syndrome. It is based (with due credit) on Brad Cohen’s memoir, Front Of The Class: How Tourette Syndrome Made Me The Teacher I Never Had. It takes us back to school all right. Which explains the number of young boys and girls at the film’s FDFS (first day, first show).

At the centre of it all is very much Rani Mukerji, with the most radiant smile ever on the silver screen—a path-breaking actor in her own right, especially in the early 2000s, given Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black (2004), where she didn’t just grab audience’s attention (cracking the part of a blind-mute girl), but also inspired a host of aspiring actors starting out at the time (Kangana Ranaut etc.), to expect, and take on female roles that phenomenally challenged them as performers as well.

Honestly, Mukerji doesn’t disappoint here either. The script, or the story, more so, does. You know exactly what’ll happen next as the teacher pulls along her delinquent pupils from the nearby slums—with the camera’s gaze fixed at capturing the usual poverty porn/tourism, and dialogues aimed at some equally banal, sanctimonious preaching.

Sure, we could do with a fine, desi version of Dead Poets Society (1989). This film’s intentions—even if multiple, and therefore all mixed up—are laudable, no doubt. But, naah, doesn’t quite cut it, you know. Or at least doesn’t seem like worth cutting classes for, anyway.

While ‘Avengers: Infinity Wars’ is set to hit the screens on April 27th, Indians fans are also eager to watch the Hindi dubbed version of the film. And we all know the dubbed version often gets us ROFL. Remembering watching the Hindi trailer of the movie? Yeah, it did leave us in splits.

And just yesterday, Shahid Kapoor’s stepdad and Ishaan Khatter’s father Rajesh Khattar made an announcement, revealing that he will be lending his voice to Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the Hindi version.

Iron Man has been more than just a superhero to his fans, as he has been a major source of inspiration. Maybe it wasn’t just the comics that made us love this Marvel character, but more than that, it was Robert Downey Jr who totally nailed the role with his spot-on sense of humor, action, and dialogues.

Just a couple of days ago, we witnessed the biggest breakup in Hollywood since Brangelina – the breakup of Henry Cavill and his KingStache. He even said goodbye to his beloved moustache with a heartfelt video that he shared on his Instagram.

#ShavedButNotForgotten

A post shared by Henry Cavill (@henrycavill) on Mar 21, 2018 at 2:10am PDT

They were so in love and the breakup came so suddenly, but at least it seems like it was mutual. But now, turns out his moustache has already found someone else.

Chris Evans New PornStache Looks Like Henry Cavill's Old KingStache

The moustache did not even wait before jumping from one superhero to another. Not cool! I can’t even imagine how Henry would be feeling right now.

Chris Evans New PornStache Looks Like Henry Cavill's Old KingStache

The other superhero in question is none other than Captain America himself. Wait, isn’t he supposed to be the good guy? How could he do that to Henry?

Why do you look so sad, Chris?

Chris Evans New PornStache Looks Like Henry Cavill's Old KingStache© Twitter

Is it because you feel bad about stealing Superman’s KingStache?

Well, let’s try to look at things from the moustache’s perspective. Maybe, it thought that being in ‘Justice League’ would be its big debut, but then Warner Bros. went ahead and spent $25 million to basically delete it. That must have hurt, I know, I would be devasted if someone went to that level to exclude me from something.

The moustache must have realized that DC doesn’t deserve it and shifted loyalties to Marvel. Moreover, the moustache moved on just in time, because obviously the biggest thing in pop culture right now is ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and saw the opportunity to find a superhero that would value it.

But, I guess the moustache hasn’t heard the bad news yet. Captain America is going to die in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, then what will happen?

I think we’ve established that the moustache is kind of a hoe and a gold-digger, so it’ll probably find another superhero to latch onto.

We have some suggestions. I would personally love to see Tom Hiddleston with a pornstache. That would be hilarious.

I feel like Mark Ruffalo can also rock that look.

Or, what about Tom Holland? That would be the funniest thing ever.

“I loved watching the ‘Entertainment Ki Raat’ team in the first season and can’t wait to be a part of the second edition. Saumya will be returning as a host of a show after a few years. “I have been busy with my daily sitcom ‘Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain’. Priyanka Chopra got her hands on a really old family picture, wherein, we see a baby Priyanka Chopra in mother Madhu Chopra’s arms and late father Dr. Ashok Chopra. Seemingly, the photo was taken when Priyanka was just a few months old. Well, the actress is completely unrecognisable as a toddler.

“Major throwback. Mommy daddy and baby me.. I’d never seen this picture until now. The sketch behind us was made by my dad. Besides being a surgeon he was an extremely creative man. Digging the ‘stache dad,” this is what Priyanka Chopra wrote.

The black-and-white photo received zillions of likes in a span of just a few hours. The global girl often gives a sneak-peak into her family by sharing some really old memories on desired occasions.

This is one of the photos shared by Priyanka Chopra:

Meanwhile, Priyanka Chopra is currently in Mumbai and will begin work on her upcoming film, based on the life of astronaut Kalpana Chawla in the next month. Co-incidently, Shah Rukh Khan too will start prepping for Rakesh Sharma biopic. When original choice Aamir Khan was on board for the Sharma biopic, there was talk that PeeCee would play his wife. We hope the two space sagas do not collide at the box office as well.

George Clooney has penned a letter to the students of the Parkland, Florida high school

Actor George Clooney has penned a letter to the students of the Parkland, Florida high school where a deadly mass shooting claimed the lives of 17 people. The student journalists from Eagle Eye, the newspaper of Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school, where the shooting happened in February, had written to Clooney and his wife Amal for an interview.

In the letter published in The Guardian, Clooney said their advocacy for gun control makes him “proud of my country again.” He, however, declined their request for an interview, saying “young people are taking it to the adults and that has been your most effective tool.”

“The fact that no adults will speak on the stage in DC is a powerful message to the world that if we can’t do something about gun violence then you will. The issue is going to be this, anyone you ask would feel proud to be interviewed by you but it’s so much more effective if it’s young people,” he said.

The Friday issue of The Guardian US was guest edited by the staff of the Eagle Eye. It is using the platform to cover the upcoming March for Our Lives as well as “heighten awareness of the issue of gun control and school safety to such an extent that the federal government can no longer ignore us.”

He is an actor who gives his best when it comes to playing a character and picking movies that we just can’t wait to watch. And now, with a Rs 1000 crore film on the cards, Aamir Khan is literally on a roll. Lovingly known as Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir is a bundle of talent, who promises an impeccable performance every time.

From playing a wrestler to a villain, a hero, a lover, and a bunch of other diverse roles, there is nothing that Aamir can’t do and now he is all set to work on his dream project ‘Mahabharata’.

Just two days ago we told you about Mukesh Ambani, who is co-producing the magnum opus movie, will also be investing a hefty amount of Rs 1000 crore in the film.

The epic tale of Mahabharata has inspired generations for ages. It is a story about power, love, hate, betrayal, diplomacy, revenge, lust, manipulation and more. The saga of Mahabharata literally represents every human behavior possible. It’s one of those ancient scripts that has laid down the foundation of ‘puruá¹£Ä?rtha’ or the four goals of the life.

And now we have a scoop that Aamir is keen on playing the mighty Lord Krishna himself. Honestly, we can imagine him fitting as the deity and playing that role flawlessly. But turns out our Mr. Perfectionist also loves Karna, and we wonder what he will pick at the end.

“Mahabharata has been Aamir’s dream project. It’s almost been a decade since he wished to work on this project. Obviously now things seem to be falling on the place. Though nothing official has been announced yet, Aamir has said no to various potential films and even stepped out of one. After ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, he will soon start working on this one and you might see him playing Lord Krishna. Aamir totally loves Krishna’s, his vision, his persona but he also loves Karna. Though he is more keen to play Krishna and it will be an interesting story,” revealed a source to MensXP.

Now that ‘Mahabharata’ is happening, we already look forward to seeing the legendary narrative of Hastinapur, the Kuruká¹£etra War and the fates of the Kaurava and the Pandava princes.

Aamir’s ‘Mahabharata’ will be more of a franchise and not just a movie. If reports are to be believed, then it is going to be one of the most expensive films ever made in the history of Bollywood. And with Aamir as the driving force, it will be epic.
