I have seen her various films where she stood out with her unique acting, but what made me fall completely in love with Tabu was her acting in ‘Maqbool’ and ‘Cheeni Kum’. Two movies, which according to me, branded her as a powerhouse actress in Bollywood.
She doesn’t believe in rules and that’s what makes her an extraordinary actress. She isn’t our normal mainstream heroine and the extravaganza and unnecessary drama doesn’t exist in the films she picks.

Today, one look at her and you can’t help but admire the way her face and eyes express emotions that most actors can’t convey with words. Her on-screen persona is so remarkable that you feel moved by her sheer brilliance. Not many know this, but acting didn’t happen to her as she was discovered and we thank the stars for that, or we would have missed an extremely gifted person like her.
This gem in the industry, who was introduced 16 years ago, is one hell of an artist and no one can say otherwise. MensXP spoke to Tabu and she gave us an insight into her life.

How would you describe your journey in the film industry till date? Do you feel some void or that something is missing after all these years?
I don’t think I could have asked for more having been on this long and fulfilling journey. At times it has been extremely challenging, but always gratifying. I’ve learned so much and am thankful for all the experiences that I have had. I just wish I had taken more vacations and spend quality time with my friends and family (Laughs!)
Success, fame, a huge fan following. What is that one dream you still think you have not fulfilled?
Honestly, success, fame and huge fan following were never my dreams, but they came to me unexpectedly. I had never planned to become an actress. But these ‘rewards’ are things I cherish the most. It’s a huge blessing in this lifetime and to be able to be connected to millions of fans and supporters, it’s an extraordinary feeling and a phenomenon according to me.
I have never been a dream/goal kind of person, but of course there are smaller wishes that I want to fulfil like I want to travel the length and breadth of India by road, I want to trek and would love to do an Everest base camp, I have a big group of friends in Hyderabad that are regular trekkers, but I have still to find the time and courage and dedication to build my stamina to prepare for a trek. But it’s something I want to experience, these are a few of my small dreams and goals that I have.
One of my best and biggest takeaways from my professional journey has been that I have got to work with some tremendously gifted and talented people. The experience of working with renowned directors like Ang Lee on ‘Life of Pi’ and working with so many people across nationalities and races, really made me stretch my bandwidth and every time I came back a newer person. I really value such experiences that took me far away from my comfort zone and exposed me to newer avenues.

How would you describe your struggle when you entered the film industry?
(Laughs) I never struggled, I was discovered. In fact, I was begged and cajoled and completely convinced to do just one film ‘Prem’ by Shekhar Kapoor and they promised me that after this one film they would get me enrolled in a university abroad. I was never interested in doing movies, I even frowned upon the idea, because I just wanted to study.
You are known to be a perfectionist. So how do you think that affects your work and the people working with you?
I want to do things to the best of my ability and would never want to leave things to chance or take it for granted. I know it’s really unfair to expect the same from others and now I am mature enough to not expect this from everybody, because everyone has their own method of doing things. When it comes to me, I want to give it my all and never settle/compromise till the time I feel I am convinced with my shot/work.
Even fame comes at a price, what price do you think you had to pay?
Fame has been the most contradictory element in my life and career. Sometimes it’s great while other times it’s not. But honestly it feels fantastic; I think it’s a huge social phenomenon to be able to reach out to the millions across the world that recognize you for your body of work. I consciously did not seek fame, but now that I have been fortunate enough to have it, I value it and can use it for a greater purpose instead of selfish gains.
Your characters are very intense. Be it in ‘Fitoor’, or ‘Haider’, do you think these roles resonate with you?
I don’t know if these roles resonate with me, but at least for a moment, I can identify with these characters emotionally. Be it with ‘Fitoor’ or ‘Haider’ I could understand the emotional core of these characters which were so amazing to bring to life and must thank and acknowledge my writers and directors who wrote these roles envisioning me to play them. That’s a huge compliment to transmute a character from paper to life and it’s the most important part of my profession that I really connect with. It gives you free range to paint them in your colours and give them a little bit of your personality.

You look exquisite and refreshing all the time? What’s your secret behind it?
My secret, when you think about it is fairly simple – making sure I take care of my skin. This is something my mother ingrained in me right from my childhood. I make sure to keep my skin well hydrated and moisturized. A personal favourite is making my own body scrub using sea salt and Vaseline Petroleum Jelly as a pre-bath exfoliator. It works especially well to take care of dry skin on your elbows and knees. Apart from that I make sure to drink enough water, get sleep, exercise, eat well.
Besides acting, what are you passionate about?
Writing, travelling, trekking, listening to music. I love writing just for me.
This year was quite an eventful one for Hollywood and all the movie junkies out there. If you ever thought that 2017 went by in the blink of an eye or was a really bland year, we’ve got something in store for you. Since, New Year is right around the corner; let’s take a look at these 10 reasons (read movies) that made 2017 one of the coolest years to live in.
1. Dunkirk
© Warner Bros.
Christopher Nolan needs no introduction. From a man who has earlier given us movies like ‘Interstellar’, ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Inception’; one can expect nothing but the best and sometimes even beyond that. His 2017 release ‘Dunkirk’ was no different.
Set in the backdrop of World War II, ‘Dunkirk’ revolves around the allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France, who found themselves surrounded by the German Army. How they get safely evacuated after a fierce battle, weaves the rest of the story.
2. Thor: Ragnarok
© Marvel Entertainment
If there was to be an epitome for ‘The Midas Touch’, we would most definitely vouch for Marvel. They can turn anything into gold and ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is proof.
Yes, it is best Thor movie you will ever see! Yes, it is the same movie which Mark Ruffalo aka Hulk accidently live streamed a portion from, prior to the release! Yes, it is same movie that we would love to watch again and again and again. So folks, don’t wait for Christmas, go and watch it right now.
3. Coco
© Pixar
If there was anything that Disney and Pixar taught us this year, it was the fact that we can never grow old to watch an animated movie. And the immense popularity of ‘Coco’ is proof of the same. This movie has already grossed nearly $390 million worldwide and has also nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
The movie narrates the story of Miguel Rivera, a 12-year-old boy, who accidently gets transported to the land of the dead. There he meets his musician great-great-grandfather and seeks his help to reunite with his living family. Even if you are not someone who watches animated movies, give this at least one chance. The movie also has a hidden message, which you need you find out yourself.
4. Justice League
© DC Comics
*Drum Roll please*…Let’s get on with the much-talked about movie of this year, a movie that we have waited 10 years for, ‘Justice League’. We agree, the flick turned more heads for Superman’s airbrushed moustache than the new characters and their superpowers. But let’s not take away from the fact that this was one movie that compelled us to say, “We came! We saw! And we never got over it.”
And for all the critics who feel that this movie was a disappointment, let’s take revenge on them by making them watch Hindi superhero movies.
5. IT
© New Line Cinema
Until last year, whenever someone made plans to watch a horror movie, people could not think beyond ‘The Exorcist’, ‘The Conjuring’, ‘Death Note’ or ‘The Ring’. But, after the release of ‘It’, things changed and how. Maybe, this is the charm or should we say fear of Stephen King’s novels.
Even today, people might not remember what they did two days back, but they surely remember Pennywise, the evil clown who loves to feast on innocent children. While Stephen King did a fantastic job with the novel, director Andrés Muschietti left no stone unturned in making the movie adaptation bigger and scarier than any horror movies out there in the market.
6. Blade Runner 2049
We don’t think we can get over this picture of Ryan Gosling anytime soon.
© Columbia Pictures
Now that we saw this picture, let’s talk about the movie it is from – ‘Blade Runner 2049’. If we were to explain this movie in one word, we would possible use either ‘Exceptional’ or ‘Brilliant’; and the fact that it has already grossed $256 million worldwide, is kind of reassuring that we are not wrong.
Set 30 years after the first film, this one will take you through the life of Officer K (played by Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department. His unravels a long-buried secret and…we won’t tell you the whole story. Go and watch the movie, right now.
7. Logan
© Marvel Entertainment
Another fantastic superhero movie from Marvel, ‘Logan’ is the 10th installment in the ‘X-Men’ series and final solo movie of our beloved superhero Wolverine. The movie has already grossed $616 million worldwide, becoming this year’s second highest grossing R-rated film (‘It’ is the first). We don’t think we need to say anything in addition to it or explain why you should watch it. All we can say is, you are missing out on some really cool stuff, if you haven’t seen it already.
‘Logan’ features an aged Wolverine along with an extremely ill Professor X, who set out to save Laura (she was created from Wolverine’s DNA), from the evil forces Reaves and Alkali-Transigen led by Donald Pierce and Zander Rice.
8. Baby Driver
© Media Rights Capital
‘Baby Driver’ is probably one of the best action movies of 2017, with a musical touch that makes it all the more intriguing. ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ actor Ansel Elgort did a fabulous job as the talented (music obsessed) getaway driver named Baby, who is forced into working for a mysterious kingpin (Kevin Spacey) of a gang of bank robbers.
In other news, Director Edgar Wright has already teased the fans that a sequel is “being hammered out”.
9. Wonder Woman
© Warner Bros.
If there was an award for the best season (we are talking about weather and not a show), summer of 2017 will possibly win that prize without any competition. Reason? Gal Gadot, our ‘Wonder Woman’. She was the primary reason for all the heat and rise in temperature we all witnessed.
Want proof? How about we tell you that this movie was the 8th highest grossing film of 2017, after it earned a whopping $821 million globally!
Still need reasons? It singlehandedly destroyed everything that Marvel worked hard for.
Still not sure whether to watch it? Well go and watch it for Gal Gadot and how she turns into one of the most badass superheroes this world has ever seen.
10. Get Out
© Universal Pictures
Written and directed by Jordan Peele, ‘Get Out’ is a horror movie that follows the lives of a young couple, who visit the woman’s parents, only to witness a series of strange events that scar the man’s life forever. It is an amazing movie that was critically acclaimed to be one of the best films of this year.
So peeps, go ahead and tag your friends to make a movie marathon plan with them. Also let us know about your favourite movies from 2017, which did not make it to this list.

Always envied flawless skin of Bollywood’s leading ladies? Well, B-Town’s mast mast girl Raveena Tandon might just help you achieve that
Always envied flawless skin of Bollywood’s leading ladies? Well, B-Town’s mast mast girl Raveena Tandon might just help you achieve that. The actor has started her own beauty video blog (vlog), called Beauty Talkies With Ravz, where she gives skincare tips and shares her beauty secrets with her followers – all in videos of under a minute.
Raveena Tandon
Tandon says that the idea of starting a beauty vlog germinated when she was flooded with requests for the same by her fans. “I’m grateful for all the love that fans have sent my way. I saw this as an opportunity to reciprocate their love. I will be addressing skin concerns and questions related to beauty that I get asked often.”
The response to her first two videos has been encouraging, she beams. While one may assume that the actor will recommend high-end skincare products that will burn a hole in their pockets, Tandon asserts that she suggests only “ghar ke nuskhe.” “I share all the home remedies that have been passed on to me. The tips that I suggest are easy to follow. The videos too are conceptualised by me,” she says of the posts that drop online every Wednesday.
Taking advantage of the interactive nature of social media, Tandon adds that she intends to take the project ahead by having interactive sessions with her fans in the near future. “Right now, we post the videos once a week. Depending on the audiences’ response, we will decide the frequency of the segment. Even if I’m travelling or busy with a shoot, I’ll fit this commitment in my schedule.”

The Karnataka government has decided not to grant permission to Sunny Leone’s New Year’s Eve show in Bengaluru following protests from right-wing groups
The Karnataka government has decided not to grant permission to Sunny Leone’s New Year’s Eve show in Bengaluru following protests from right-wing groups. The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) and some other organisations have been opposing the event as they consider Sunny an ‘assault’ on the city’s culture.

For the past week, KRV members have been taking out rallies, burning effigies of the actor and even threatening suicide. “Don’t bring her [Leone] here. People are opposed to the event. Let them [organisers] hold events related to Kannada culture and literature, which is our heritage,” Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy has reportedly said.

South actor Isha Talwar has indulged in an underwater smoochfest with Saif Ali Khan in Akshat Verma’s upcoming film, Kaalakaandi. The scene was shot in a swimming pool in Thane. Saif is a certified diver, so could manage the scenes but Isha had to undergo training in diving. The actors had to stay in the water for hours along with the camera crew.

Managing to breathe in between takes from an oxygen cylinder and keeping the coordination going was a task. Saif and Isha, however, managed to nail the shot in three takes. The film, which courted censor trouble besides theatrical release issues, finally hits the marquee next month.
