After winning the Cannes Grand Prix Glass Lion 2016, India’s first transgender band, 6-Pack Band, was recently invited for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2017. Curated by Shamir Tandon and backed by Y-Films (youth wing of Yash Raj Films), the band set the stage ablaze with their act at the do, held between June 17 and 24.

Talking to mid-day from Cannes, Tandon said, “It gives me and the band immense pride to have represented India on a global platform. Becoming the first-ever artistes from the Indian subcontinent to have performed at the Cannes main stage is an honour. The third gender in India is yet to get its due. Success stories like that of the 6-Pack Band is our effort to bring social integration in India and across the world.”

Khan feels their successful musical journey is inspiring for the transgender community, which can encourage others to come out confident. “We want to give our community wings so that we can pursue our dreams. Being at Cannes among such esteemed guests and performing here makes me a proud Indian.”

Two hit songs from Salman Khan’s 1997 original, ‘Judwaa’, ‘Tan Tana Tan’ and ‘Oonchi Hai Building’, are being recreated. Jackky tells mid-day she rehearsed for 70 hours a week to get the steps right. The clip begins with Jagga (Ranbir) who is a school boy stammering and says that singing helps him to put out what he feels and express. It is through his small songs that he delivers his dialogues giving the film a unique twist. Shruti (Katrina) with him in every frame makes them look like a perfect team who are out to solve a mystery.

In the last few decades, Bollywood has made its mark globally. Indian celebs’ popularity has grown immensely. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Indian filmmakers and artists are doing everything in their capacity to make it big worldwide.

After ‘Dangal’ and ‘Baahubali’ making it big at the box office globally, we have yet another good news for Bollywood lovers which will make you say ‘hurray’ in unison. No, it’s not Salman Khan’s Tueblight making 1000-2000 crore but the fact that Indian actors have received an invitation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to be its members.

Yes, you heard us right. With an intention to diversify its membership this year, the Academy has sent out 774 invitations to new members from 57 countries to be their member.

According to a report by a leading daily, biggies like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Irrfan Khan, Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone and Aamir Khan are invited to be members of the Oscars class 2018. However, Shah Rukh Khan is missing from the list, making us wonder why.

But they are not the only ones who have made it to the list; Goutam Ghose and Mrinal Sen have been invited among the directors, Buddhadeb Dasgupta and Sooni Taraporevala among the writers. Anand Patwardhan has been invited under documentary filmmakers list. Costume designer Arjun Bhasin and Sound Designer Amrit Pritam Dutta are part of the list too.

However, this isn’t the first time that Bollywood celebrities have been invited by this prestigious organisation. Last year, Sharmila Tagore, Deepa Mehta, and Freida Pinto were part of it, but this is the first time that so many Indians have been invited in one go.

The announcement was made when Cheryl Boone Isaacs, President of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences officially told the Oscar website, “We’re proud to invite our newest class to the Academy. The entire motion picture community is what we make of it. It’s up to all of us to ensure that new faces and voices are seen and heard, and to take a shot on the next generation the way someone took a shot on each of us.”

Hollywood biggies like Gal Gadot, Adam Driver, Riz Ahmed, Domhnall Gleeson Warwick David, Adam Driver, Riz Ahmed, Domhnall Gleeson, Chris Pratt, Anna Faris, Margot Robbie, Channing Tatum, Shailene Woodley, Ruth Negga, Rupert Grint, Warwick David and others have been invited as well.

While Betty White, 95, is the oldest member while Elle Fanning, 19 is the youngest.

Well, definitely it’s a very proud moment for India. Not that Indian arists needed this invitation to prove their worth but it feels great that the Academy is finally broadening its horizons and diversifying its membership by inviting people of colour this time.
