Firangi is boring. Kapil Sharma, who is among the most talented comedians, should stick to tickling the funny bone. Even with an earnest attempt, he fails to deliver. Read the full Firangi movie review here

‘Firangi’
U/A: Romance-drama
Director: Rajiv Dhingra
Cast: Kapil Sharma, Ishita Dutta, Monica Gill, Aanjjan Srivastav
Rating:

Midway through Firangi, Kapil Sharma’s love interest, Ishita Dutta, tells him, ‘Mujhe kuch samaj nahi aa raha hai tu kya kar raha hai.’ That’s probably what the audience would ask the comic throughout the film. Firangi is boring. The farcical performances and unnecessary melodrama are reminiscent of a bygone era in cinema. Set in 1921, 26 years before India’s independence, the movie kicks-off with the familiar baritone of Amitabh Bachchan, whose narrative is redolent of the one he lent in Lagaan (2001). But, why bring up the Aamir Khan blockbuster in the same sentence as Firangi?

On the surface, the film is about Sharma, a village simpleton. He is a jobless man aspiring to join the police force under the British Raj, but is unable to procure a spot after three attempts. He meets Dutta, inadvertently, at a friend’s wedding in another village. The duo falls in love instantly. While all the bravery is futile, Sharma manages to bag a spot in the force due to his uncanny ability to fix a back problem with a kick. A sub plot of a British police officer cheating the villagers with the help of a king [Kumud Misra], suddenly begins to gather momentum. The miscreants hatch a plan to set up an alcohol factory, and intend to get rid of the residents of a village to do so. Here, the film takes a turn, emerging as a revenge drama instead of a romantic-comedy.

The plot is generic, familiar. Even the supporting acts disappoint. Character artistes like Aanjjan Shrivastav, Rajesh Sharma, Inaamulhaq and even Mishra, are reduced to caricatures. The foreign artistes, primarily playing cops, have comical accents. The direction too is weak. Coupled with a screenplay that certainly required more thought, this film emerges as a half-hearted effort from a man whose debut outing too tanked. Adding to the misery are the songs, which do little to further the movie. The film looks promising post-interval as it appears to garner pace, but slumps quickly as scenes and dialogues appear repetitive. The final nail in the coffin is a climax that seems to have been written in a bid to get the project over with. It is silly. Sharma, who is among the most talented comedians, should stick to tickling the funny bone. Even with an earnest attempt, he fails to deliver.

‘Firangi’ actress Ishita Dutt got married to her longtime boyfriend and co-star, Vatsal Sheth. Her wedding took place in suburban Mumbai and several Bollywood personalities such as Bobby Deol, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, etc attended the reception. However, Tanushree Dutta former Miss India and actress, who happens to be Ishita’s sister was missing from the wedding festivities. Tanushree’s absence sparked a lot of rumours in B’Town that the ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ girl is hell-bent on staying away from Bollywood and celebrities.

Also missing from Ishita’s reception was her ‘Firangi’ co-star, Kapil Sharma. Kapil Sharma, who is said to have hit a rough patch professionally and personally, also gave her wedding a miss.

While talking to a daily few months back, Ishita had denied being in a relationship with him. Both Vatsal and Ishita were rumoured to have signed a ‘no dating’ clause while they were filming their show ‘ Rishton Ka Saudagar- Baazigar’. Ishita and Vatsal even went on a vacation together, which finally blew the lid off their clandestine affair.

Tanushree Dutta has moved to the US. After a successful debut, she went on to do some forgettable movies and then disappeared from the scene. In 2012, she emerged with a shaved head in a bid to find spiritual solace. We came across this recent snapshot of Tanushree with sister Ishita Dutta, who was in New Jersey for the Indian Independence Day celebrations. Ishita, who featured in the Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam (2015), is spending time with her. If the snapshot is any indication, Tanushree appears to be in a happy zone now.

Ace comic actor Kapil Sharma has quite often been alleged to have a drinking issue, which is also indirectly blamed for the downfall of his once famous show ‘The Kapil Sharma Show.’ During the trailer launch of his upcoming film ‘Firangi’, Kapil candidly spoke about the problem.

‘I cancelled a lot of programmes; like recently I cancelled a programme for the BSF in Delhi. I really wanted to do a show for soldiers like this. When I started my show, I went to the Wagah border,’ the comedian told the media. ‘I got to realise that I drink everyday to escape my problems. So I have decided to reduce it,’ he added.

The stand-up comedian further said, ‘Now, I feel a bit happy by coming in front of you all and also opening about my problems.” Kapil added that his mother was not informed about the cancellation of his show and controversies surrounding it. ‘My mother was not informed about the issue. She was told that there was a strike, due to which the shoot was cancelled. She’s too innocent, but later on, she came to know about the whole incident,’ he said.

The ‘Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon’ actor also revealed that there is no bad blood between him and co-star Sunil Grover despite of the infamous mid-air fight between them. He even said that he had called Grover for the launch of his new movie but the actor is currently out of the country busy with another show in Canada.

‘Firangi’ is an upcoming historical period drama film set in the year 1920 and is directed by Rajiev Dhingra. Apart from Kapil, the cast includes Ishita Dutta and Monica Gill. It is slated to release on November 24, 2017.

The pre-independence era and British rule was possibly one of the toughest times to live in. On one hand where people’s hearts were burning with raging revolt and unparalled love for their country, the British were going to extreme lengths to crush that mutiny under their feet. While, our freedom fighters fought with their blood, sweat and tears; we don’t think there was anyone who openly dared to kick the Britishers in their ass. But, our beloved Kapil Sharma did exactly that and instead of getting killed, he got himself a job under a British officer (someone who was kicked by him). This is the premise of Sharma’s upcoming movie ‘Firangi’, which is in reality as desi as one can expect it to be.

Instead of tickling your funny bones, Sharma will actually be seen in a different avatar. He plays a young man who feels that British aren’t bad people. He eventually falls in love with a girl but things backfire when the whole village turns against him thinking he is a traitor working for the British and try to kill him. How will he prove his innocence and convince the villagers and his lover about Britishers not being bad, weaves the rest of the plot.

The trailer packs a lot of funny, intense and romantic moments, which makes this movie a complete entertainer and with Kapil being at the center of this film, you can be ensured that you won’t get bored while watching it. The movie is directed by Rajiev Dhingra and stars Ishita Dutta as his love interest. This film also marks Kapil’s foray into production. From playing comedy roles, romancing multiple women at a time to playing a serious role like this, Kapil has come a long way in Bollywood and we don’t think there’s anything that’s stopping him.

The movie is slated to release on November 24.
