Ruling out any possibility of manufacturing Jaguar and Land Rover in India in the near future, Tata group chief Ratan Tata has said that some “silly taxes” make even their assembly costlier than the imports.

Tatas are building a plant in China which will export these cars to different parts of the world and have been invited by Saudi Arabia as well.

“India is still making it somewhat difficult for us to offer it,” he said when asked as to when Jaguar and Land Rover could be manufactured in India.

“They are being assembled now (in India). Unfortunately, today if we were to manufacture here, it would cost more than the assembled one,” said Tata, who would hang his boots as the chief of an over USD 100-billion salt-to-software conglomerate later this month on December 28.

Asked about the difficulties in manufacturing these cars in India, Tata said, “Because we do not have scale of manufacturing here, we are selling about a 1,000 Jaguars a year and you would need to be at least four to five times that in order to justify the investment that you would make…

“…so unfortunately, the assembly here is turning out to be more costly than importing the cars because of some silly taxes that they have been imposed on companies.” Tata said that the “government should really look at doing things to incentivise people to bring more investment to India so that it becomes a base of exports, which unfortunately is not happening and China is doing that.” “We are building a plant in China which will export to different parts of the world. Even Saudi Arabia is asking us to come there and India is still making it somewhat difficult for us to offer it,” he added.

India on Sunday said China was a “major concern” than Pakistan given the power it has to impact the country in various spheres.

Noting that China was necessarily more important in terms of India’s global vision and the ties between the two countries can impact the region, Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said as far as Pakistan was concerned, the impact was “more pacific”.

He was replying to queries on which was a bigger challenge for India – territorial dispute with China or trust deficit with Pakistan.

“China is necessarily more important in terms of our global vision. In terms of economics. In terms of stability and impact of stability that our friendship and understanding can have on Asia and South Asia. As far as Pakistan is concerned, it is more pacific.”

“China is part of a larger picture and Pakistan being part of that picture… significant part of the picture and can ruin that picture if Pakistan does not have right colour.

“But it is much larger canvas and picture we are dealing with as far as China is concerned. China we engage multilaterally everywhere. China can be a very very important partner in both in Asia and Africa and elsewhere. China will play a significant role in what we want to do in the UN,” said the minister, who was on way back from Myanmar after a three-day visit.

He further said, “China is also a constant reminder to us that we got to put our economy at the right track. We can pretend that China is not there. But China is there and unless we put our economy on the right track it is going to overwhelm us completely.

“So China is a major concern and Pakistan, in a significant way (is a concern) but not a major concern.

“Because Pakistan has the ability to ruin the game for us therefore we have to keep Pakistan also in focus…..,” the minister said.

“There are linkages also between China and Pakistan and that is important. But the linkages again is less important dimension,” Khurshid said.

Asked about the ‘pinpricks’ China keeps giving to India on territory issue, he said, “I really wish they do not happen but they do happen.”

“We have learnt to live with them. We have learnt to manage them. We have learnt to control them. But today these are not restricted to what was our real problem i.e issue of the border. Today they are coming elsewhere in multilateral situation. We don’t want to be drawn into any dispute vis-a-vis China because we want to look at the positive as far as possible,” the minister said.

He said India should engage with China, grow with China as was decided in 1988 during late Rajiv Gandhi’s visit to Beijing and added that India was getting signals from China that emerging young leadership also wanted to go on the same path.

China claims all titles at junior World TT Ch`shipHyderabad: China completed a clean sweep of titles at the Volkswagen 2012 World Junior Table Tennis Championships after winning the girls and boys trophies, here on Sunday.

Earlier in the week they had won both the boys? and girls? team titles.

German Petrissa Solja, the only non-Chinese, lost her semifinal match to Chinese top seed Zhu Yuling in the morning who finished the day by rolling over Gu Yuting 4-0 for the girls crown.

The speed with which she disposed of her opponent is only half of the story. Her superior technique and never-say-die attitude tell the rest.

With equal felicity, she won several winners both off her back and forehands and was never in any sort of trouble after going 2-0 up.

Soon after Fan Zhendong overcame a two-game deficit to beat Lin Gaoyuan 4-2 (10-12, 7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8, 11-4) to claim the boys singles title.

Earlier, he had claimed the mixed doubles title too.

Fan took his time to size up his left-handed opponent and it cost him the first two games. Once Fan had things in his grip, it became easy as he went on to take the next four without much ado.

Lin made a few service errors along the way and in the ultimate analysis proved dear, the organizers said in a release.

Second-seeded pair of Fan Zhendong and Liu Gaoyang made a surprising recovery to beat the top-seeded compatriots Lin Gaoyuan and Gu Ruochen 4-3 (11-6, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8) to take gold in the boys doubles.

Gu Yuting and Zhu Yuling downed Gu Ruochen and Liu Gaoyang 4-3 for girls double gold and the mixed doubles gold went to Fan Zhendong and Liu Gaoyang who beat the Lin Gaoyuan and Gu Ruochen combine 4-3.

Earlier, things became clear which side of the balance is becoming heavier.

Germany’s Petrissa Solja, who excelled throughout, could not match the Chinese top seed Zhu Yuling as the latter won in straight sets.

In the other semifinals, Gu Yuting defeated Gu Ruochen in the all-Chinese semifinal 4-1.

In a way, the semifinals ended along expected lines with the top two seeds entering the final.

Petrissa was straightaway into attack and went 6-3 up with her top spin play off back and forehands doing the tricks.

However, Zhu getting into her grove to level 6-6 but at 10-8 Petrissa held the advantage but her opponent saved two game points.

At 11-10 Zhu took lead for the first time and a fortunate edge saw her taking the first game.

The German tried her best to salvage but with her nerves settled, the Chinese had the measure of her rival.

Petrissa’s receiving was poor in the second yet she ran the Chinese close.

She was, however, unable to work her angles as well and Zhu?s consistency saw her through. Though the pattern continued in the two games, the Chinese always had the upper hand to complete the task.

Second-seeded Gu Yuting had a nervous start but overcame the early hiccups to go 1-0 up against Ruochen.

Lacking in experience somewhat, Ruochen was struggling against Yuting?s controlled aggression. Yet Ruochen?s consistency level was good and that is what won her the third game.

But that’s all she could do as Yuting’s percentage speed game kept improving and it had no answer from Ruochen.

It`s tough to be a champion: SainaNew Delhi: London Olympics bronze medallist shuttler Saina Nehwal has said it is tough to be a champion and it gets lonely at the top.

“Looking back, I feel it is tough to be a champion. It gets lonely at the top. But then again, you don`t have the time to think about the loneliness. You just have time to train, eat, sleep and get up again, so there is no time left to feel bad,” said Saina.

“You have your parents who will support you, you have your friends who will be there for you, you have your coach who will guide you. Whatever sacrifices I`ve made have made me who I am today.”

But how does the 22-year-old Hyderabadi celebrate her victories and spend her leisure time?

“I sleep till late on Sundays. I am reserved and I don`t like partying but I like going for movies, shopping for gadgets, jackets and shoes and watching tennis. But you don`t know how time flies on Sundays,” added the shuttler before leaving for the Super Series Finals in China.

MUMBAI/RIYADH: Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) signed a preliminary deal to build a plant in Saudi Arabia, extending its expansion in fast-growing markets having already started work on a plant in China.

The British luxury marque, owned by India’s Tata Motors (TAMO.NS), signed the deal to look at the possibility of making 50,000 Land Rovers a year at a Saudi plant costing some 4.5 billion riyals, the country’s commerce and industry ministry said in a statement.

A spokesman for JLR said the agreement was “purely exploratory” and it was too early to provide any details.

JLR has seen huge demand over the past year from emerging markets such as China, Russia and countries in the Middle East for its luxury SUVs and sleek sedans, offsetting sluggish growth in developed markets.

The company and its Chinese partner Chery Automobile said last month they had laid the foundation stone for a factory near Shanghai.

“I can’t make any statement for these kind of investment figures. We have just signed a letter of intent …. it’s a letter of intent to investigate the project,” JLR Chief Executive Ralf Speth told reporters in the Saudi capital.

“A memorandum of understanding is … scheduled in the next year and this memorandum of understanding will have more facts and figures.”

Diversification drive

The proposed plant, which will assemble four-wheel-drive Land Rovers, will likely start up in 2017 and will be located in Yanbu on the kingdom’s Red Sea coast, said Azzam Shalabi, head of the Saudi commerce and industry ministry’s industrial clusters programme.

Saudi Arabia, which does not have an existing automotive industry, is seeking to develop local industry to diversify its economy away from oil exports, leveraging its abundant natural resources and low electricity prices.

JLR said in its statement it had already identified opportunities for aluminium component production in the country, but it did not specify where the investment for the proposed plant would come from.

The company would not lose British jobs to any new Saudi plant, Speth said. “If we proceed, it will complement our existing expansion in the UK and elsewhere,” Speth was quoted as saying in the JLR statement.

For Tata Motors, JLR is a key unit which delivers 90 per cent of group profit. The group’s shares jumped last month after it reported that July-September margins at JLR had improved to 14.8 per cent from 14.4 per cent a year earlier.

Ratan Tata, outgoing chairman of Tata Group, told a magazine in September that Tata Motors was looking using local aluminium production in Saudi Arabia, where Saudi Arabian Mining Co (Maaden) 1211.SE and Alcoa Inc (AA.N) are building a smelter scheduled to start production next year.

That smelter is on Saudi Arabia’s Gulf coast, across the country from Yanbu, but Shalabi said a rail link connecting the two areas would be operational by 2017 to ship rolled aluminium to the Land Rover factory.
