Having chosen a biopic for his third film, Harshvardhan Kapoor is aware that recreating Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra’s journey will be a tall order. The biopic, we hear, will trace Bindra’s transition from adolescence to adulthood as he trains to be a professional shooter. Stationed in London, Kapoor has already begun prepping for the role — he is working on achieving a lean physique to portray Bindra during his teenage years.

Reveals a source, “While a portion of the film will see Harsh as 17-year-old Bindra competing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, it will then progress to chart his growth as he bags the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Since the film traces his 18-year journey, Harsh will be required to lose weight first to look like a 17-year-old and then put on a few kilos to ape Bindra’s look in his late 20s and early 30s.” The insider adds that prosthetics and VFX will be employed to make his physical transformation seamless.

Harshvardhan Kapoor is currently shedding the kilos to attain a physique with zero per cent body fat. “We have designed a 90-minute workout that is a combination of free weights, sprints on a treadmill and functional training. This is in addition to cardio, weight training and Vrikshasana [a form of yoga that Bindra recommends],” says one of the actor’s trainers.

He adds that the youngster is also honing his mental skills. “We are working towards helping him get a higher attention span. The average attention span of an adult is 15 minutes. Harsh needs to have a 60-minute attention span. This will help him in perfecting the nuances.”

Director Kannan Iyer, who is helming Abhinav Bindra biopic, hints that the Olympic gold medallist might appear in the upcoming film on his life.

The yet-to-be-titled movie is being adapted from Bindra’s autobiography — ‘A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold and Beyond’.

When asked if Bindra would make an appearance in the film, Kannan told PTI, “Yes, possibly towards the end, it is a kind of tradition in sports biopics but we are yet to decide.”

The plot of the film, which features Harshvardhan Kapoor in the lead role, will pretty much pan out on the lines of the book, he says.

“He has written a book, so we are going by that. He has loved the script and is always available for consultation.”

The “Ek Thi Daayan” director reveals Harshvardhan has begun his training under a trained shooter. Recently, the “Mirzya” actor posted a brief video holding a gun and listening to the instructions of an expert.

“He will be training for some time under the world class shooter Suma Shirur, followed by sessions with Abhinav.” The real life father-son duo of Anil Kapoor and Harshvardhan will be sharing screen space for the first time for Bindra’s biopic.

“Both are such good actors that they can do anything on screen. ‘Dil Dhadakane Do’ showed a beautiful relationship between Anil and Ranveer Singh as father and son… And they will do a terrific job,” says Kannan. He adds, “There will be a romantic interest in the film… what is more likely is there will be a new person. But it is too early to talk about it.”

The film will be shot mostly in Chandigarh; some portions will be shot abroad and the Olympic part will be shot on the sets in Mumbai.

One movie old Harshvardhan Kapoor is currently busy with his second movie, but that has not stopped him from being noticed or signing more stuff. He underwent rigorous training for his first movie ‘Mirzya’, and while the movie was not a commercial hit, it was praised quite a lot by the critics.

The Kapoor boy has now signed his third movie which is a biopic on Abhinav Bindra. He took to his Instagram profile to share the happy news with everyone.

Beginnings are very special. Especially when you get to play a character that has made the nation proud on world stage. I am stoked to have been chosen to play #AbhinavBindra and hopefully will do justice to the man, the legend! Like the man himself said “Hard Work is a talent.” #LetsDoThis

“The biopic is a big responsibility because of the subject matter. It is the most mammoth responsibility I’ve ever shouldered. I roped in Abhay, who wrote the final draft of Bhavesh Joshi, to work on a new draft of the Bindra biopic. We are taking the script into a really exciting place. It’s about externalising internal conflicts, and making it emotionally and visually spectacular”, he mentioned in an interview. Abhinav Bindra is an Olympic gold medallist in shooting and is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan. He won gold at the Beijing Olympics 2008 in the 10m air rifle tournament.

Interestingly, his sister, Sonam Kapoor’s success story also includes a biopic on Neerja Bhanot, which even earned her a National Award. Harshvardhan is currently shooting for Aditya Motwane’s ‘Bhavesh Joshi’. He is already preparing for this biopic and has been spotted at a shooting range with Abhinav’s coach.

Bollywood is currently obsessed with biopics and there’s a plethora of them that are in the pipeline and some of them are already a huge success.  ‘Dangal’ has already set a super high benchmark with its mad success not just in India, but also in Hong Kong and China. ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, ‘Mary Kom’, and a biopic on Dhoni are some of the major movies made in sports genre that have enjoyed a great run at the box office.
