FDI will push country towards economic slavery: Baba Ramdev Lucknow: Firing a fresh salvo on Congress, Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Saturday alleged that the decision of Centre to allow FDI in multi-brand retail will ruin the future of country’s farmers and push India towards economic slavery.

“They are playing with the future of five crore retail traders, 25 crore people associated with them and around 75 crore farmers.

They are not even ashamed,” he alleged while speaking at a function here.

FDI will push country towards economic slavery: Baba Ramdev

Alleging that FDI was brought under US pressure, Ramdev accused Congress of taking the country towards economic slavery.

“Earlier Congress used to give slogans that ‘Congress ka haath aam aadmi ke saath’, Now I say Congress ka haath Walmart ke saath, with foreign companies. They have no love for country and are taking it towards economic slavery,” he alleged.

“US expressed happiness the moment FDI came here. They will, because their people are sitting here,” he said.

He claimed voting in favour of FDI in both Houses of Parliament was not the victory of FDI, but “the victory of CBI”.

On the issue of black money, Ramdev said the huge sum lying in foreign banks can bridge country’s financial deficits if brought back to the country.

He also praised CAG Vinod Rai for “exposing scams”. On his future strategy, Ramdev said he will tell about it “when time comes”, and insisted that they are “fully prepared” to play an “important role”.

He urged people to ensure that not a single Congress candidate wins in Lok Sabha elections.

“This time vote where Baba says,” he said. On quota issue, Ramdev said time has come when emphasis should be given on representation instead of reservation.

Addressing the Ficci annual general meeting here, Sharma said the opposition parties should stop “daily discourse”, questioning government decisions and smelling a rat in every move.

He said it was in the domain of an elected government to take executive decisions which should not be dragged to Parliament and voted upon.

Ready for debate on govt decisions: Anand Sharma

“…Do I have to go on a daily basis to seek a certificate or endorsement of my thinking or approach or policy initiative or my decision as a minister of the Republic of India that I should be perpetually on a regular call at the doorstep of Nitin Gadkari or Prakash Karat. I can’t do that and why should I?,” he said.

Sharma’s criticism of the opposition parties, mainly the BJP, comes in the wake of a full-fledged discussion in Parliament on the government allowing 51 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, under a rule which required voting in both the Houses. The opposition motions against the decision were negatived with the support of BSP and Samajwadi Party.

Earlier, addressing the same meeting, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj asked the industry bodies to hold a roundtable dialogue where government, opposition, industrialists, as well as CAG, CVC and CBI director are invited to discuss the national issues.

“A national dialogue will end this cynicism in the country,” Swaraj said.

Reacting to her suggestion, Sharma said, “I am willing to debate (with) the critics and the opponents any day without notice. Decide the place, decide the forum and I will come”.

Kate hoax call: Indian nurse`s funeral in Karnataka town on Monday Mangalore: The body of Indian-origin nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who was found dead Dec 7 in London, will be buried at Shirva town in coastal Karnataka, family sources said Saturday.

“The coffin carrying Jacintha’s body is expected to arrive here from London via Mumbai Sunday afternoon and will be taken to Shirva Monday for last rites and funeral at the local cemetery around 4 p.m.,” Udupi Superintendent of Police M. Boralingaiah told IANS, citing family sources.

Kate hoax call: Indian nurse`s funeral in Karnataka town on Monday

Jacintha’s husband Benedict Barboza and her son Junal,16, and daughter Lisha,14, will accompany the coffin from London to Shirva about 50 km from here and 400 km from Bangalore.

“The coffin will be kept in Mangalore for the night at a mortuary or a place the family will decide. The place could also be the residence of Jacintha’s mother, who lives in a suburb of Mangalore with her son and another daughter,” Boralingaiah said.

Security arrangements are being made in Mangalore and at Shirva to maintain law and order and ensure no untoward incident takes place.

Shirva is the homo town of Barboza where his mother and sisters reside. It is well known for growing jasmine flowers.

“We estimate about 5,000 people to attend Jacintha’s funeral at Shirva, including VIPs and local officials. The coffin will first be taken to the local church for mass and then to the Catholic cemetery for burial,” Boralingaiah said, quoting the family.

Mangalore diocese Vicar General Dennis Prabhu and Mangalore Archbishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza will hold a prayer service in the local cathedral Sunday evening where both the families, their relatives and friends will be present.

Saldanha, who graduated from Father Muller College of Nursing in Mangalore in the mid-1980s, first worked at Muscat in Oman for a few years and went to London after marriage 15 years ago to live with barboza, an accountant in the British National Health Service at Bristol, 190km from London.

Jacintha was found unconscious Dec 7 morning in the quarters of King Edward VII Hospital in central London where she was working as a senior nurse, and was pronounced dead when wheeled into the hospital in an ambulance.

Jacintha got unwittingly involved in a hoax call Dec 4 from a radio station in Australia when she was on duty at the hospital where Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middletown was admitted Dec 3 after she complained of acute morning sickness.

When the jockeys (Mel Greig and Michael Christian) from Sydney radio station called the hospital early Dec 4 imitating the voice of the queen (Elizabeth) and the prince (Charles), Jacintha picked the call in the absence of the receptionist at that time (5.30a.m.) and transferred it to another duty nurse who briefed them on the health condition of the royal princess (Kate).

Though Kate was discharged Dec 6, news about the prank call shocked the royal family and caused outraged the world over, especially in the British media.

Bengal-Hyd Ranji: 18 wickets tumble in one dayKolkata: Bengal batsmen surrendered the intiative given by their seamers on a greentop Eden wicket to find themselves at sea in their own backyard as 18 wickets fell in the group A league match against Hyderabad on Saturday.

Put in, Hyderabad`s first innings lasted for two hours and 28 minutes to be skittled out for 115 with Mohammad Shami Ahmed claiming 4/36.

In reply, Bengal were no different as they crumbled to the fury of pacer Ashish Reddy (5/30) and left-arm pacer Anwar Ahmed (3/30) to be tottering for 79/8 at stumps on the first day, still trailing Hyderabad by 36 runs.

Resuming the final session at 37 for one, Bengal collapse began soon after as they lost seven wickets in 15.5 overs in a space of one hour and 37 minutes.

Opener Arindam Das waged a lone battle as he was at the crease with a dogged 37 not out (100 balls) while Shami was unbeaten on zero, as Bengal were in danger of being bundled out inside 100.

Everything went according to the plan at the start of the day as skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla, who replaced an injured Manoj Tiwary at the helm, won the toss on a customised green-top.

The seamers took full advantage of the conditions to give Bengal the perfect start with Shami Ahmed giving the first breakthrough in the sixth over, castling skipper Akshat Reddy (5).

Veer Pratap Singh (3/31) gave a fine support at the other end as he rocked the Hyderabadi middle-order with the scalps of the talented Hanuma Vihari (15), K Sumanth (25) and B Sandeep (10) to be reduced to 58 for four in 19 overs.

Sayan Sekhar Mondal (1/20) bowled debutant Parth Jhala after the drinks break while skipper Shukla (2/21) also did a fine job with his medium-pace to bundle Hyderabad out in the post-lunch session.

Bengal began their reply ominously with opener Rohan Banerjee being dismissed by Reddy for a duck, but Das and Sudip Chatterjee played out patiently to see the second session through.

Little did they know that all their hardwork of the first two sessions would go down in the drain as Hyderabad bounced back in the final session to make the honours even at the end of the first day.

Reddy gave the breakthrough post-tea when Chatterjee was caught at second slip (Paramveer Singh) while chasing an outswinger.

After seeing off four deliveries Abhishek Jhunjhunwala too showed lack of application to be caught behind from Anwar Ahmed`s fine left-arm pace bowling.

Anwar Ahmed`s three wickets from three overs — Jhunjhunwala, Wriddhimana Saha (4) and Debabrata Das (0) — brought on the Bengal tail as they found themselves hiding for covers at their own backyard.

Brief Scores: Hyderabad first innings: 115 all out; 37.1 overs (K Sumanth 25, Ahmed Qadri 20; Mohammad Shami Ahmed 4/36, Veer Pratap Singh 3/31).

Bengal first innings: 79 for eight; 38 overs (Arindam Das 37 batting, Sudip Chatterjee 20; Ashish Reddy 5/30, Anwar Ahmed 3/30). Match to continue.

Armstrong’s ‘banned’ doctor denies doping linkJohannesburg: Lance Armstrong`s former physician Michele Ferrari has claimed he never saw the American cyclist indulging in doping activities, and added he had no knowledge of the banned cyclist engaging in doping activities.

“I`ve never seen, I never heard something about that. He never asked me for information about doping,” Sport24 quoted Ferrari, as saying to a news channel.

In its extensive report that resulted in Armstrong being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency traced more than $1 million in payments from Armstrong to Ferrari from 1996 to 2006.

It detailed how Ferrari told Armstrong and others to dope with EPO and blood transfusions. In July, USADA banned Ferrari for life.

Ferrari added: “My relationship with some teammates of Lance Armstrong was very, very short and occasional … There are six riders that accused me … I didn`t have any relationship, any consulting with these guys.”

Ashraf thanks BCCI for shifting Indo-Pak T20 gameKarachi: PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf on Saturday thanked BCCI president N Srinivasan for postponing the second Twenty20 International between India and Pakistan by a day, which was scheduled to be played in Ahmedabad on December 27.

“Zaka Ashraf has sent a letter to Mr Srinivasan thanking him for this gesture,” PCB media manager Nadeem Sarwar told PTI.

The PCB, in its request to the BCCI, had asked for the Ahmedabad match to be re-scheduled as the fifth death anniversary of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in 2007, falls on that date.

“The PCB chairman is grateful that the Indian board responded positively to his request although the BCCI had already printed tickets for the match on Dec 27th,” Sarwar said.

The game will now be played on December 28 at the same venue.

Pakistan will be touring India later this month for a limited-overs series comprising of two T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals.

India slip yet again to give England the upper handNagpur: India`s batting woes continued to haunt them with the top-order batsmen succumbing tamely yet again as England snapped up four quick wickets to gain firm control of the the crucial fourth and final cricket Test here on Friday.

AS IT HAPPENED»

After posting a decent score of 330 in the first innings, the visitors exploited the slow and uneven bounce of the track to leave India gasping at a precarious 87 for four at close on an eventful second day which saw nine wickets fall.

Paceman James Anderson (3/24) did the bulk of the damage while Graeme Swann chipped in with a wicket as the out-of-form Indian batsmen put up another pathetic display with none of them willing to show the application and temperament to hang in there.

Virat Kohli (11) and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (8) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day, with the hosts still trailing by 243 runs.

Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 199 for five, England did well to stretch their first innings total to 330 with debutant Joe Root (73), Matt Prior (57) and Swann (56) being the notable contributors.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was the pick of the Indian bowlers with a career-best haul of 4/69 while paceman Ishant Sharma (3/49) and R Ashwin (1/66) were the other wicket-takers.

The failure of India`s famed batsmen again let the team down badly as Virender Sehwag (0), Gautam Gambhir (37), Cheteswar Pujara (26) and Sachin Tendulkar (2) could not stay for long. Tendulkar was bowled by Anderson who has now dismissed him nine days, the highest by any bowler.

With three full days left in the match, England have put themselves on course for their first series win on Indian soil in 28 years. India, on the other hand, will have to bat out of their skins to save the ignominy of their third successive humiliating defeat.

England struck in the very first over when Anderson broke through the tentative defense of Sehwag with an in-swinger before the hosts adjourned for tea at a nervous 32 for 1.

The opener, who made a two-ball duck, was completely beaten for pace and bowled, his middle stump ripped out of the ground as his lack of footwork let him down.

Gambhir, looking in good touch but for his poor judgment of a run, and Pujara looked well in control of the proceedings when they added 58 runs in 132 balls before the sudden slump when India lost both these batsmen and Tendulkar for just 12 runs and in 9 overs.

Pujara could be termed unlucky to have been declared out by umpire Rod Tucker as the ball seemed to have missed the glove, hit his forearm and bounced off his pad for Ian Bell to take a superb, diving one-handed catch at forward short leg.

The right-handed Saurashtra batsman looked quite composed despite Anderson trying to hustle him with his bumpers in his 89-minute stay during which he also drove the fast bowler to the straight field and hooked him for two fours.

But Swann’s entry into the attack after 20 overs accounted for his wicket.

Tendulkar, whose career is on the line after a string of poor scores, appeared ill at ease and was beaten twice by the sudden turn extracted by his nemesis in the series — left arm spinner Monty Panesar — but it was his other career nemesis – Anderson — who got his wicket for a record 9th time.

Anderson, brought back into the attack after the drinks break, made two balls go away and then brought one back to bowl Tendulkar.

Tendulkar was beaten by the pace and inward movement and inside edged the ball that also kept a bit low which crashed into his middle and leg stump to leave the batsman flabbergasted and thoroughly distraught.

Gambhir, who had batted resolutely for 137 minutes and 93 balls, attempted an ill-advised drive away from the body to offer a catch to wicket keeper Prior.

Kohli and Dhoni managed to see off the day without further setbacks.

Earlier, leg spinner Chawla hastened the end of the England first innings for 330 after lunch by grabbing the visitors’ last three wickets in only 25 balls in the fourth and final Test here today.

Chawla, who finished with his best figures of 4 for 69 in his three-Test-old career, snapped up the wickets of Joe Root (73), to end the eighth-wicket stand between the debutant and Graeme Swann, the latter batsman too for 56 and James Anderson for 4 in a superb post-lunch spell of 4.5-0-17-3.

The 23-year-old Aligarh-born Chawla thus bettered his earlier best figures of 2 for 66 versus South Africa at Kanpur in 2008, his previous appearance in a Test.

Chawla’s excellent spell, after England resumed at the lunchtime score of 277 for 7, helped India wrap up the visitors’ first innings within the first hour of play after lunch.

England had resumed at the overnight 199 for 5 in the morning, added 78 runs in 32 overs while losing the wickets of Matt Prior for 57 — bowled by Ashwin for his only wicket of the innings — and Bresnan who was bowled for a duck by Ishant Sharma.

Sharma, who bowled with a lot of fire on the low and slow track sporting cracks, finished with fine figures of 3 for 49 in his second match of the series while Ravindra Jadeja (2 for 58 in 37 overs) and Ashwin (1 for 66) were the other successful bowlers.

India’s leading wicket taker in the series, left arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, ended wicket-less after conceding 71 runs in 35 overs.

Chawla, who had dismissed Ian Bell yesterday, accepted a return catch from Root after the batsman had a sudden rush of blood – after having plodded for nearly six hours in his 229-ball essay in which he hit just 4 fours.

It ended the stubborn 8th wicket partnership between Root and Swann, who faced 91 balls and struck six fours and two sixes, after the duo added an invaluable 60 runs after joining hands at 242 for 7 at the fall of Bresnan before lunch.

Two overs later, the leg spinner then trapped the dangerous-looking Swann leg before for 56 with a quicker ball that went straight and hit him on the pads as he attempted a reverse sweep.

Rafa Benitez eyeing Chelsea swoop for WalcottLondon: Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez is reportedly trying to land Arsenal winger Theo Walcott at Stampford Bridge.

Benitez is confident of getting his man as the 15 million pound-rated player would not have to uproot from London.

Liverpool and both Manchester clubs are also in the hunt for Walcott.

However, Chelsea have sent a scout to watch Walcott, and plan to use him as a more central attacker, a role the England man craves, The Sun reports.

According to the paper, interim boss Benitez will have cash to spend in next month’s transfer window.

He rates Walcott’s lightning pace as a huge asset as he looks to land a player to support Fernando Torres, the paper said.

The forward, 23, has refused to sign a new 80,000 pounds-a-week contract at Arsenal, and can leave for nothing next summer when his current deal runs out, the paper added.

Not interested in politics but cricket: Irfan PathanVadodara: A day after he shared the stage with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a poll rally, cricketer Irfan Pathan today said nothing much should be read into it as he was an “apolitical” person and concentrating on his game.

“Neither do I have any connection to politics nor am I interested in it. I am a cricketer and currently recovering from an injury that I had suffered while playing for the home team of Baroda in Ranji Trophy tie,” he told PTI.

Eyebrows were raised after the 28-year-old all-rounder shared the dais with Modi in the BJP campaign rally at Kheda for the second phase polling due on December 17.

Polling for 87 Assembly seats was held in the first phase today.

BJP has been trying to woo minority community voters in the state though it has not fielded any Muslim candidate in the elections.

During the rally, Irfan was seen standing alongside the BJP stalwart on the huge stage.

Irfan, who belongs to Vadodara and has been forced out of cricketing action by an injury, waved his hands to a huge gathering of supporters, who had come to listen Modi`s speech.

In September 2011, Modi had launched `Sadbhavana Mission` for `peace and amity` and to appease minority community voters.
