As a unique promotional activity for Rani Mukerji’s upcoming film, the actress asked a few prominent personalities, Shah Rukh Khan – being one of them about their life’s biggest hiccup

Shah Rukh Khan hichki
Shah Rukh Khan reveals the biggest hiccup in his life.

Shah Rukh Khan is a living legend today. The outsider, the path-breaker, the icon – Hindi cinema hasn’t seen a Badshah rule with such unparalleled love and success. Yet, early on in his life, Shah Rukh faced the biggest hiccup one could face – the sudden loss of his parents. The makers of Rani Mukerji’s Hichki are promoting the film uniquely by asking prominent personalities to share their untold weaknesses and how they eventually converted them into massive strengths. SRK reveals that harnessing the pain and grief of his loss into his passion for acting has been his way of overcoming this massive Hichki of his life. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Shah Rukh Khan reveals, “My greatest Hichki moment is the death of my parents. I was 15 when my father passed away and 24 when my mother passed away. We were not financially well off, and I was studying for my Masters degree then. It was very sad for us. The empty house without my parents used to come to bite us (my sister and me). The loneliness, pain, and sadness of the loss of both my parents, could have been overwhelming enough to take over my life wholly. I decided to overcome thisHichkimoment by letting acting fill up my entire life.”

He adds, “I never quite let go of the pain, but I also used it to make me completely focus on my profession. People close to me will tell you that acting is my vent, my window of manifesting these overwhelming emotions. I always say this that one morning, when I wake up, I will realise that I have spent all these emotions and now have nothing more to give (as an actor). Otherwise, death is a hiccup from which there is no coming back. I realised that and therefore, overcame it by giving my work, my all. God might bring a hiccup to you in this life but he will also give you multiple ways to deal with it in this lifetime. I could find my family (the love and sense of belonging) amongst my friends and colleagues in the film industry again.”

Ali Abbas Zafar believes working with Salman has added maturity to his craft as a filmmaker

Ali Abbas Zafar and Salman Khan
Ali Abbas Zafar and Salman Khan

Coming off from two back-to-back successes, Ali Abbas Zafar is nervous about the expectations surrounding “Bharat”, his third collaboration with Salman Khan. The director says it is natural for people to expect him and Salman to strike gold after two superhits — Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai — together. “With ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ and ‘Sultan’ behind me, I’m more nervous for my next one because I know the expectations and anticipations will be really, really high,” Ali told PTI. The human-drama is a remake of the 2014 South Korean film “Ode To My Father”.

“It is a very different film from ‘Tiger’ and ‘Sultan’. We are trying to do something new with it. It’s too early to talk about it,” he said when prodded about “Bharat”. Ali believes working with Salman has added maturity to his craft as a filmmaker. “People tell me there’s a lot of maturity in my work now. May be that maturity has got to do because I’m working with Salman Khan who has so much experience. “The text that I write kind of compliments (him) and he as a mature actor takes it to another level.”

While today he and the superstar stand as one of the most formidable director-actor duos in Bollywood, Zafar’s first meeting with Salman – some seven-eight years ago – was about everything else but work. “My first ever meeting with him was through Katrina (Kaif). She was there in my first film (‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) and we went to his house, somewhere in 2010-2011.

“We just had a very normal, regular conversation. At that point of time I had no idea I am going to make films with him. “He was a huge star and I was just starting my career. We had a nice chat about life and world but not about cinema. He asked me where do I come from, what I want to do.” Talking ahead of the world television premiere of “Tiger Zinda Hai”, scheduled for March 18 on Sony Max, Zafar feels “liberated and uplifted” after the film became a blockbuster.

“Success pushes me to work even more hard. Everything now will create more anticipation, we will have to pull our socks up and work harder to meet those expectations. “But when a film releases and you detach yourself from it, you can see the film more analytically and understand what worked and what didn’t. That is a big learning exercise which always happen when you watch the film three-four months after its release.”

Actress Saumya Tandon will soon be seen donning the sexy avatar of a secretary in an upcoming episode of Bhabhiji Ghar par hain

Saumya Tandon
Saumya Tandon

Actress Saumya Tandon will soon be seen donning the avatar of a glamourous secretary in an upcoming episode of Bhabhiji Ghar par hain. Saumya as always has exceeded the expectations of the audience not just in terms of her performance but also in the ways she creates and pulls of stunning looks on the show. The stunning yet delightfully prim and glamourous look of the character underlines the subtle sophistication that Saumya loves to incorporate in every outfit she designs. According to sources, the actress apparently took cues for this particular look from Cameron Diaz in Bad Teacher.

On speaking about the character’s look, Saumya said ” When I was told that I have to do the secretary look. I thought I should make her glamorous, funny and quirky. For a chief minister’s secretary it was quite bizarre to have this get up, but since its comedy, we don’t have to make it real, a bit bizarre works.

So I teamed up a formal peplum short black skirt with formal shirts and halter office wear tops, I pulled my hair back in a ponytail and wore specs. I kept a live typewriter walking behind me, basically, a guy running with a Stypewriter , whenever my boss (Tiwari ji) will ask me to type anything I would type at a fast speed with my head gyrating into sharp nods with the movement of my fingers and my ponytails moving like a pendulum. With Tiwari always eyeing the Bhabhiji this glamorous secretary look worked perfectly.

Lara Dutta says with increasing participation of women behind the cameras, there’s a change visible in the entertainment industry

Lara Dutta Bhupathi
Lara Dutta Bhupathi

From winning the Miss Universe crown to navigating her way in Bollywood, coming up with a prenatal yoga series and now debuting on television, Lara Dutta Bhupathi has enjoyed various roles in showbiz. She says with increasing participation of women behind the cameras, there’s a change visible in the entertainment industry.

“I think the whole scene is changing because of more participation of women, and so there are that much better-written parts that women are getting in films. I think the younger lot — Alia Bhatt, Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut — they are really lucky to be a part of Indian cinema at a time when more women filmmakers are telling stories that deserve to be told. “This is only improving the image of our women in Indian cinema,” Lara told IANS in an interview.

She pointed out how since she produced the film Chalo Dilli, the number of female filmmakers has increased. “They are coming up with the right story and thankfully, studios are ready to invest money and taking female filmmakers seriously. On the other hand, actresses like Kangana and Anushka are also producing their own films. I think that is how we are getting more and more empowered,” she added.

While some of the iconic filmmakers like Mira Nair and Aparna Sen have represented Indian cinema on the global platform in the past, in the last few years names like Zoya Akhtar, Alankrita Shrivastava, Gauri Shinde and Konkona Sen Sharma have gone behind the camera for movies. Actress Anushka has backed some offbeat films like “NH10”, “Phillauri” and the latest “Pari” under her home production, while Priyanka Chopra is producing a slew of regional films. And who can miss out Ekta Kapoor.

Though heroines tend to get typecast in a mother’s role after a certain age, it is interesting how at 39, Lara gets to play a strong professional like her part as a lawyer in “Azhar”, and as an art gallery owner and curator in “Fitoor”. On this, she said: “I never made a strategy to choose a certain kind of role, but yes those are the kind of roles I am offered. Maybe, filmmakers believe that I can bring something more to such characters in a film. Honestly, I do not analyse them that much.

“I think that is why I have done a variety of roles from a lawyer to a village woman and a mad character in a comedy film like ‘Singh Is Bliing’.” Lara is making her debut on Indian television with a dance reality show titled “High Fever… Dance Ka Naya Tevar”. On what sets the show apart, she said: “The fact is that in our country, there are many relationships in the family that maintain a certain distance all their life. Our society works that way. And I think to an extent the mainstream Indian television played it to the gallery.

“Therefore, there has always been a certain distance between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, or a relationship between brother-in-law and sister-in-law. “In our show, we are breaking the stereotypical equation of such relationships. Here, a brother-in-law is coming with his sister-in-law and saying what a friendly bond they share, through their dancing.

“This will create a huge impact among many people out there in the audience to come out and celebrate family bonds. This show will bring a new perspective to the traditional mindset of family relations.” According to her, that is the most interesting element about being a part of the show. The show, also featuring Ahmed Khan and Dana Alexa, an international dancer and choreographer as judge, is starting from Saturday on &TV.
