I feel like one of the main things that sets Marvel Cinematic Universe movies apart from any other superhero movies is the fact that they’re the perfect balance of serious and hilarious. It’s hard to find that kind of balance, but they do, and they do it perfectly.
Moreover, when you have such incredible actors in your movies – which Marvel obviously does – sometimes the most memorable scenes and lines don’t even need to be in the script. There are so many scenes from all of the movies that fans would remember to this date, it doesn’t matter if they watched the movie yesterday or ten years ago, and it’s kinds of surprising and impressive at the same time that some of them were improvised by the cast.
Here’s some of the best unscripted scenes because what else can we write about these days other than Avengers and Marvel?
1. Tony Stark And His Blueberries
I feel a lot of fans are aware of the fact that Robert Downey Jr gets hungry easily and therefore likes to hide food all over the set. Well, one his snack break actually made it onto ‘The Avengers’ when he got hungry while filming a scene with Mark Ruffalo and pulled out blueberries. No one can ever say no to Robert Downey Jr, can they?
2. Thor Hanging His Hammer On A Coat Rack
As the name suggests, ‘Thor: The Dark World’ is supposed to be a little gloomy and serious but that doesn’t mean that some jokes can’t make it into the movie. One such hilarious scene, as it turns out, was improvised by the man himself. When Thor enters an apartment, he’s quite confused as to what to do with his hammer. So, what does he do? He hangs it on the coat rack, of course. Apparently, Chris Hemsworth came up with the idea while goofing around during takes, and he just thought it was funny.
3. The Avengers’ Eating Shawarma
Marvel loves those post credit scenes and the one featured in ‘The Avengers’ might be the best one. This one features all the avengers sitting silently at a shawarma place after saving the world. The scene was inspired by – any guess – Robert Downey Jr, of course. In the end, when Tony Stark almost loses his life right before the Hulk breaks his fall. Then, while he’s surrounded by all the avengers, he opens his eyes to ask “what’s next” before suggesting that they all go out for shawarma after.
4. Star-Lord’s Introduction
Everyone always knew Iron Man and The Hulk, but Guardians Of The Galaxy? Not so much, at least until the movie became such big hit.
Because of this, director James Gunn and star Chris Pratt decided they could have some fun with the character’s relative unpopularity by making a little joke when Star-Lord is first capture. In the scene, he is deeply disappointed that his captors don’t recognize his superhero name. well, that was a great way to get the audience to sympathise by this superhero that no one can forget now.
5. Iron Man’s Dialogues
I’m sure a lot of hardcore Marvel fans are aware of this already but I’m still putting this on the list because this probably the biggest improvisation that has come out of all the MCU movies.
When director Jon Favreau started filming the first ‘Iron Man’ movie, he went on with more of a framework than an actual script, he there was no other option to take an improv-heavy approach. Lucky for him, he had an amazing cast who was up for the task, mainly Robert Downey, Jr. and Jeff Bridges, who have improvised most of the dialogues in the movie that started it all.
6. Hawkeye’s Funny One-Liner
Hawkeye and Quicksilver had somewhat of a love-hate relationship, where they constantly kept challenging each other. But, that came in handy when we got one of Hawkeye’s funniest lines in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.
At one point in the movies, Quicksilver is speeding away and then Hawkeye to draw his bow and take aim at him, while quietly saying “Nobody would know… ‘last I saw him, Ultron was sitting on him!’”. That was a line Jeremy Renner actually came up with himself.
7. Odin’s Growl
Remember that scene in ‘Thor’ where Asgardian ruler Odin banished Thor from the realm and even took away his hammer? Well, turns put that Anthony Hopkins was so into the scene that when Loki tried to step in to defend Thor’s actions, Hopkins let loose with an incredible snarl to quiet him. That was actually completely unscripted and the shock on Tom Hiddleston’s face is totally genuine. Well, when you get an incredible actor like Anthony Hopkins to improvise, the result will be nothing short of amazing.
8. Peggy Carter Meeting Captain America
Captain America literally went from zero to hero in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and we weren’t the only one shocked and also in awe of his transformation. When Peggy Carter first met him in the movies, he was still the scrawny kid too weak to get into the army, but we all know that changed soon.
When the new and improved Steve Rogers came, Peggy couldn’t help but be distracted by his enviable physique, even going as far as to touch his bare chest. It does seem like a natural response to having a shirtless Captain America standing so close to you, and it turns out, it actually was! Heyley Atwell admitted that when the cameras rolled during that scene, it was the first time she’d seen Evans without his shirt on and she just couldn’t help herself.
