Will she? Will she not? This speculation about Vidya Balan playing India’s first female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been creating a buzz in B-town for almost two years now. But finally we have an answer and we are already excited about the outcome.

Vidya, who is critically known for playing powerful characters, has actually acquired the rights of Sagarika Ghose’s book ‘Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister’. And she will be seen playing the titular role.

The confirmation came when Sagarika took to Twitter and announced the news saying, “Just signed the contract for movie rights for my book “Indira, India’s Most Powerful PM” with @vidya_balan and @roykapurfilms! Utterly elated!! Look fwd to seeing INDIRA on screen! @juggernautbooks #IndiraTheMovie”

Now, that’s some good news after all. The ‘Tumhari Sulu’ actress’ fans have been waiting to hear this news for a very long time and this confirmation comes as a relief.

It all started in 2015 when director Manish Gupta went to Vidya with this script, she was blown away and instantly loved the idea of playing India’s Iron Lady.  However, getting a green signal from the Congress office for Manish was a tedious task.

But there is nothing to worry about anymore. As per the rules, when a film is based on a book, you don’t really need permission from the political party to make a film. So one thing is sure, this film isn’t getting stalled because of political influence. In fact, one can even expect the official announcements to be made soon.

In fact, Sagarika’s book doesn’t really portray Indira Gandhi in a bad light as it hardly deals with the controversial aspect of her tenure. It deals with different aspects of Indira’s life; like her failed marriage, reasons behind the Emergency in 1975, her unsettled relationship with her son Sanjay Gandhi, and other political issues. That’s the reason why Congress Minister P Chidambaram was the one who launched this book in the first place.

For many who are still wondering. Let us tell you, the fate of the film won’t be like Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Indu Sarkar’, which was brutally chopped before it was given a clearance certificate by the CBFC, nor would it hurt anyone’s sentiments per se.

So, let’s get ready to see Vidya all decked in crisp cotton saris playing one of the most talked about and influential leaders of India who changed the whole political scenario of the nation.
