It was strange to see Anushka Sharma introduce Yash Raj’s new face, Anya Singh, at an event on Wednesday. Anushka, who is also a YRF discovery, was kept hidden by the production house during her debut film, ‘Rab Ne Bana Do Jodi’ (2008).

She stepped out only after the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer had hit the marquee. It’s almost a decade and it’s a different scenario now. Known for keeping things a well-guarded secret otherwise, this makes for a welcome change from YRF.

She took everyone by storm with her power-packed performance as the policewoman in “Mardaani”, and then took time off for motherhood. Now, actress Rani Mukerji is returning to the big screen with “Hichki”, which she says is built on a positive response.

To be directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Maneesh Sharma under the Yash Raj Films banner, “Hichki” will see Rani in a positive and inspiring story about a woman who turns her biggest weakness into her biggest strength.

Talking about it, Rani said in a statement: “I was looking for a script that would challenge and excite me, and ‘Hichki’ came my way.”

“Each of us has a weakness that pulls us back. It could be a disability or any condition but if we just look at it as simply a hiccup, we can emerge as a winner. It won’t come in the way of achieving our dreams. ‘Hichki’ is built on this positive premise and I decided to take it up,” added the actress, who is married to YRF head honcho Aditya Chopra and has a daughter named Adira with him.

‘Hichki’ will be Sharma’s third film as a producer with YRF after ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ and the forthcoming ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’.

Malhotra, who has earlier directed ‘We Are Family’, will be making his first film with YRF.

Cinema has always been an integral part of Karan Johar’s life. One of the most celebrated directors of Bollywood, Karan Johar has quite a journey as a filmmaker himself.

Karan Johar In Doordarshan’s ‘Indradhanush’BCCL

For most people, Karan Johar’s first tryst with cinema started as an assistant director for Aditya Chopra on the sets of India’s best romantic film ever ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ in 1995.

Karan Johar was also seen playing Raj’s friend in the film but that’s not the first time KJo faced the camera!

Here’s some news, all you Salman Khan fans, that will definitely take you by surprise! After earning the title of ‘Sultan’ of Bollywood with his last film, looks like Salman Khan has decided to experiment with his on screen image!

Remo D’Souza has roped in Bhai in for his next venture. Yes, you guessed it right, a dance film. Salman Khan would be playing a trained dancer in the film and while that’s as exciting as it is scary, that’s not even the big news! Salman Khan would be seen playing a father to a 13-year-old girl in the film. The film revolves around an ageing dancer and his daughter.

“In my next, I’m playing the father to a 13-year-old girl. It’s a film about dancing. Like the Hollywood Step Up franchise. I’m going to be a properly trained dancer. You know how painful that is? But I’ve always believed that effortless hard work should be seen on-screen,” Salman revealed recently.

Given how predictable Salman Khan’s choice of roles is, this project does come as a surprise. The last time Salman Khan played a father was 18 years ago in ‘Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai’, just FYI.

Salman Khan’s dance moves, however much eccentric they may look, have always been iconic, be it ‘O O Jaane Jana’ from ‘Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya’ to ‘Hudd Hudd Dabangg’. And now with Remo D’Souza’s expertise in dancing, we’re really looking forward to watching Salman Khan get professional dancing right!

“Salman listens to the choreographer, then, goes ahead and does his own steps, so it’s going to be a lot of lessons for him this time,” this piece of information shared by a source close to the makers of the film worries us a bit though, to be honest.

Looks like this one’s either going to be a blockbuster or a major disappointment!

‘Befikre’, Yash Raj Films’ boldest venture so far, may not have gotten great reviews but thanks to Ranveer Singh, the film is all everybody is talking about!

Ranveer Singh’s Nude Photoshoot Before He Appeared Butt Naked On ‘Befikre’© YRF

Those few who bought the tickets and watched the film were in for a surprise for Ranveer Singh pushed the envelope way too far with this one. If you thought that skimpy red, padded underwear was the boldest the film got, you’re in for a shock. Ranveer Singh appears butt naked in one scene in the film and the cinemagoers obviously cannot deal.

How CBFC passed this film with a U/A certificate despite featuring 23 kisses and a butt shot of Ranveer Singh is something even Pahlaj Nahlani couldn’t justify in that utterly ridiculous interview with DNA. But that’s a discussion for later.

The internet being THE INTERNET has now dug up an old photoshoot of Ranveer Singh, probably from his initial years in the industry and it has him lying naked in a bathtub. Yeah, ‘Befikre’ wasn’t the only time Ranveer Singh flashed his butt. BollywoodLife circulated this picture on the internet and it’s obviously making headlines!

Another reminder that the internet never forgets.

‘Befikre’ is an Aditya Chopra film.

At no point while watching the film could I shirk off the thought that what was unfolding before my eyes had been conceptualised and executed by the man who once gave us a film that forever changed the way we looked at romance in our movies, and which spawned a deluge of similarly-themed films.

But let’s forget, for a moment, that Chopra wrote and directed ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ 21 years ago, and then followed it up with two films (‘Mohabbatein’ and ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’), neither of which could outdo Chopra’s debut, but were at least credible films, with good actors, quotable lines, and actual plots.

‘Befikre’ is meant to be a departure for the filmmaker—an attempt at encapsulating a more “modern” romance—which unravels without the usual Chopra tropes: parental pressure, age-old restrictions and societal expectations. There’s probably nothing more challenging for a filmmaker of Chopra’s pedigree than to step out of his comfort zone and to turn every trick employed in past films on its head. In that regard, Chopra displays as much bravery and “boldness” as he would like to believe his two protagonists do in ‘Befikre’, and his intention to reinvent himself could even be lauded.

Befikre Movie Review And Rating© YRF

Comfort zones, however, exist for a reason. When audiences step in to watch a Sajid Khan film, for instance, they expect a certain brand of humour. You know what you’re in for—hammy acting, slapstick comedy, an over-the-top climax; it may not be your cup of tea, but at least you aren’t served guava juice. You, however, don’t walk in to watch an Aditya Chopra film, and come out feeling like you got a Sajid Khan film in return. That’s just barbaric, and could unsettle the best of us. And that’s exactly how ‘Befikre’ leaves you—senses numbed, eardrums hurting, head spinning.

Apart from all its misplaced attempts at portraying a “young”, “carefree” relationship, ‘Befikre’ left me dazed with the sheer noise generated by its never-ending dialogue, often thrown at audiences with merciless frenzy by Ranveer Singh (an actor who got his break in an Aditya Chopra production, and has since proved his mettle with fine performances in films like ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’). Singh’s annoyingly hammy performance could hardly be attributed to him alone, though. Would actors working with Chopra question his storytelling? Would technicians come down hard on him for his filmmaking choices?

Would Sharat Katariya, who gave us earthy, relatable dialogues in a gem like ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’, not write lines that so terribly misrepresent the lingo of this generation? “Main kal hook-up nahi karne wali thi”, or “Hum live-in karne waale hai” – for instance – don’t make the characters seem like credible portrayals of people around us. Instead, they come across as poorly-imagined versions of what a filmmaker and his team thinks “youngsters” sound like. It’s the kind of clueless posturing displayed in content created by Y-Films – the digital arm of Chopra’s production company, Yash Raj Films – which tries to encapsulate the spirit of its target audience (young India) with similar broad strokes.

Befikre Movie Review And Rating© YRF

‘Befikre’ is just that—a filmmaker’s statement on the youth of today, who are meant to be, apparently, befikre (careless) in their approach to relationships, and constructed from scraps gathered from other films. The Paris setting seems more like a cop-out than an actual backdrop; it’s as if setting a story about Indian characters in a more liberated society would give them the license to emulate what they don’t even seem to fathom.

Of course, there are resources at Chopra’s disposal that are maximised for effect—the locations are woven into the story to provide eye-filling frames, every scene is shot with flair by cinematographer Kaname Onoyama, and two young actors let go of inhibitions for their director’s benefit. While Vaani Kapoor displays dignity and grace in portions, her character rarely displays traits that make her seem like a person we can relate to. Singh seems to overcompensate for his co-star’s softness with zest and energy that drives you up the wall after a point. Towards the tail end of the film, where the drama allows him to not behave like a four-year-old kid on speed, Singh shows glimpses of restraint and maturity—not just as a character, but even as performer.

‘Bekifre’ isn’t just Aditya Chopra’s most insufferable film yet, but also one of the worst movies of 2016—a year where filmmakers, incidentally, seemed to treat audiences with more respect than before. Watch it only if people jumping on each other in a church is your idea of fun. Or just wait for ‘Housefull 4’.

Aditya Chopra’s third film in 21 years and unarguably the boldest venture by Yash Raj Films, ‘Befikre’ has been creating headlines for months now with every song and promo, the reason mostly being Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor’s kisses.

Let’s admit it. The film does look like innovation was the last thing on the director’s mind. It’s the same old guy-and-girl-meet-at-a-foreign-location-and-have-NSA-fun we recently saw in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Tamasha’ too. The promos and the trailer received a lot of flak by the audience for offering absolutely nothing new and fitting in way too many unnecessary kisses to compensate.

Ranveer Singh appeared on Anupama Chopra’s talk show along with Vaani Kapoor and admitted that the ‘Befikre’ promo did make the film look frivolous. The revelation came when Anupama Chopra asked “Who are these people and why are they making out all over Paris?” “Can we ask the guy who cut the promo why he’s cut the promo like this?” Ranveer replied.

Ranveer Singh admitted that he wasn’t very happy with the promo himself. He was mad, in fact, at the editor over the content of the ‘Befikre’ trailer. ‘I had a big tiff with him when he showed me the promo before putting it out. I was like “Why are you presenting it this way?”’

“But he has a clear choice to underpromise and overdeliver and he wants everyone to discover the film as they watch it. He doesn’t want to give anything away.” He went on to add, promising that there’s a whole film in there.

But he did agree that it was justified for people to think ‘Befikre’ had nothing to offer apart from PDA.

“There was immense amount of craft in what’s a seemingly frivolous film. But yeah, if you’re gonna cut promos like that, people are bound to feel that,” he added.

Well let’s hope ‘Befikre’ surprises us with its story line and performances!
