Strong rumours bordering on confirmation: Actor-cricketer couple Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli to solemnise their four-year-long relationship this month

Over the past few days, Bollywood and the cricket world have been abuzz with rumours ofAnushka Sharma and Virat Kohli tying the knot in Italy this month. In the latest development that borders on confirmation of their wedding plans, mid-day has learnt that select residents of Badrinath Tower at Versova, the highrise where the actor resides, have received invites for the nuptials. We hear the star’s father, Ajay Kumar Sharma, has been personally calling up the star’s neighbours and extending invitations.

A source reveals, “The star dad has made calls to some building folks, inviting them to the wedding that is slated for next week. As everyone cannot travel to Italy, he was keen to make them aware of the developments and seek blessings for the couple.” The source adds that the neighbours have been requested to keep things hush-hush considering the media attention surrounding the impending marriage.

Speculation about the couple solemnising their relationship arose when Kohli, in October, bowed out of the ODI series with Sri Lanka scheduled for December, citing personal reasons. The stories gained credence last week when Sabyasachi Mukherjee was spotted exiting Sharma’s house, sparking rumours that he is designing her bridal trousseau. Eyebrows were raised when Kohli’s childhood cricket coach Rajkumar Sharma too reportedly applied for leave this month.

As is with most celebrity weddings, there has been no dearth of contradictory stories — with some stating that a popular Juhu five-star has been booked for a three-day affair and others alleging that the couple will have a court wedding in the city on December 12 or 18.

However, sources close to the star insist Italy is the destination of choice for the couple. Call it coincidence, but interestingly, Sharma’s mentor Aditya Chopra tied the knot with Rani Mukerji in a hush-hush ceremony in Italy as well.

Superstar Aamir Khan, who had earlier appeared on a chat show with Virat Kohli, praised the India cricket captain for supporting young sportsmen in the country. “I think what Virat is doing and his entire effort to support to young sportsmen across the country is a wonderful idea,” Aamir said on the sidelines of the first edition of Indian Sports Honour Awards organised by the Virat Kohli Foundation on Saturday here.

Apart from Aamir, choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan along with some of the cricket personalities attended the event. Kohli and his girlfriend and actress-producer Anushka Sharma stole the limelight as they walked together on the red carpet. Actor Sidharth Malhotra said that a lot needs to be done when it comes to sports. “Today, it’s a great thing that we are honouring all sport personalities for their contribution to the country.

“I have just come here to support them. While growing up, I used to play rugby, football and basketball so, I think a lot has to be done when it comes to sports. Today’s event makes it more important because they are supporting other sports apart from cricket. It’s a great initiative,” he added.

Tennis star Sania Mirza admired Kohli’s efforts. “Virat is doing an amazing job. We all know, the amazing batsman he is and the amazing captain we have. But it’s really nice, as an athlete what he is trying to bring in sports and trying to give exposure to every other sport in our country.”

Farah, a close friend of Mirza, was also excited for the awards. “I feel a film should be made on Sania Mirza’s life. She has a great story. I don’t know if I can make it because I am not sporty, but if possible I would love to because she is one of my best friends. As of now, I don’t have such plans,” said the “Happy New Year” director.

There has been buzz about Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli getting hitched in December. What led to speculation is when news surfaced that Kohli has asked the BCCI for a break in December. But those in the know apparently say it is a publicity gimmick for their new ad for ethnic wear. The commercial has them exchanging vows.

It seems to have spilled on to real life. Anushka is busy with her production, Pari. She also stars in Aanand L Rai’s film, Sanjay Dutt’s biopic and Yash Raj’s production, Sui Dhaaga, which has Varun Dhawan as her co-star. Doesn’t look like Anushka can go on a break. She might just squeeze in a holiday with Virat. With no denial or confirmation, speculations continue.

Arguably one of the most popular and consistent batsmen in modern-day cricket, Virat Kohli has won accolades and continues to grow his fanbase in every corner of the globe. The Indian captain has undeniably been the driving force behind India’s meteoric rise in cricket over the past few years.

Whether it’s limited-overs or Test cricket, the Indian batting sensation has developed a knack of decimating the opposition bowlers with his majestic batting display. Currently ranked No. 1 in both ODIs and T20Is, only a handful of batsmen can match the influence Kohli tends to have on the opposition in international cricket.

Owing to his exploits, it’s only fair that the 28-year-old is probably the most sought-after cricketer in the country. From politicians to celebrities, Kohli’s aggressive batting has clearly floored us all. And, we bet, that’s probably one of the things that helped Kohli to woo Bollywood hottie Anushka Sharma.

While Kohli and Anushka continue to set new relationship goals for modern-day couple, another Bollywood actress has become the latest addition to the Indian batsman’s fan club.

Kareena, who is celebrating her 37th birthday today, confessed her love for the swashbuckling right-handed batsman. During a recent interview, she showered a lot of praise on Kohli and claimed that he is her favourite batsman.

“I love the way Virat plays. He is my favourite.” When asked if Virat Kohli is soon to become the next Sachin Tendulkar, she stated, “Isn’t he already the next Sachin Tendulkar? After all, he’s the reason why we are winning so many matches in succession,” she said.

Kareena is married to Saif Ali Khan – son of the legendary Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Known as the ‘Tiger’, Pataudi will always be remembered for his contribution to Indian cricket.

At a time when the caste-system had over-ridden the field, the Nawab of Pataudi – despite coming from a family of royals – took it upon himself to unite people to play together as Indians rather than playing in accordance to their respective castes.

Taking over the reins of the Indian team at the age of 21, barely months after being involved in a car accident that would impair the sight in his right eye forever, he led India in 40 of 46 Tests he played in, and won 9 of them.

But more than anything else, he led Indian cricket out of its morass of defeatism and instilled in his fellow cricketers a belief that winning was possible. Under him, India achieved their first overseas Test victory against New Zealand in 1967.

MS Dhoni might have turned a year older but for his fans, he is still the beloved ‘Mahi’. Yesterday, he called in his birthday with the Indian cricket team, his wife and daughter, Ziva.

However, the best part was the cake cutting. Dhoni cut the cake and smashed it on his face himself so others didn’t have to do it! That’s called being a sport.

We wish Mahi a very prosperous and a beautiful life ahead.

Virat Kohli and Jonathan Trott exchange words on day fourNagpur: Virat Kohli and Jonathan Trott were involved in a verbal duel during the fourth day of the final Test between India and England here on Saturday.

Trott, batting on 43 in England`s second innings total of 123 for three, tried to cut a short delivery from pacer Ishant Sharma which was taken behind by Mahendra Singh Dhoni who threw it up high in the air in delight only to see his claim and that of other team members rejected by umpire Kumar Dharmasena.

Following Dharmasena turning down the confident appeal, Kohli ran up to the batsman for an exchange of words after which square leg umpire Rod Tucker summoned Dhoni and spoke to him.

It was not clear from TV replays whether Trott had edged Sharma or not.

Earlier, Cook had stood his ground when he was declared out caught behind for 13 by Dharmasena and left the field reluctantly after his first twin-failure in this four-game series.

He was out for one in the first innings here.

India had the wicketless session they desperately needed on the third morning in Nagpur although it was slow progress by Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. However, the pair had little option but to be cautious due to the combination of India’s poor overnight position, the slow pitch and accurate bowling. By lunch the deficit was still a significant 184 with the match approaching the half-way mark.

As with many players in the India team both Kohli and Dhoni are men under pressure; Kohli because of a lean series at the end of a profitable year and Dhoni because he is leading a side that is underperforming while his own returns have not been overwhelming. So it was to their credit that they resisted during the session, shelving the free-flowing scoring they are known for. It was another example, as with Joe Root, that survival is not the main issue on this surface.

The intensity of the previous evening had diluted somewhat although the England attack offered precious few scoring options during a session that yielded 59 runs in 32 overs. James Anderson, the star of the second evening, began with a four-over spell – surprisingly his only bowl of the morning – during which he found Dhoni’s outside edge through an empty slip cordon but as with so many in this match it would not have carried except to a ridiculously close catcher.

There was the occasional boundary to punctuate the dot balls. Kohli elegantly drove Tim Bresnan wide of mid-off and later picked off one that was a touch wide from Monty Panesar. There was one delivery that got England, and Graeme Swann, excited when Kohli received one which bounced and was glanced through leg slip.

Alastair Cook fiddled with his field during the session, having catchers on the drive in various positions but against batsmen intent largely on survival it was mighty tough work to make an impression. It highlighted, if that was required, the brilliance of Anderson the previous day. The new ball is due in seven overs and that should signal a push from England.

Nagpur: A brilliant partnership between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli took India to 227/4 at tea on day three of the fourth Test being played at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur.

India started the afternoon session at 146/4 with Kohli on 46 and Dhoni on 31. Kohli soon went past the fifty run-mark as England took the new ball in the 81st over. Dhoni raised the tempo as soon as the new ball was taken and played some fabulous strokes to reach fifty.

Both batsmen played superbly and raised the rate of scoring to take the Indian score past two hundred. Soon the two had a partnership of 150 runs.

India at tea were trailing by 103 runs with Dhoni unbeaten on 75 and Kohli on 77.

Former India selectors, two of them part of the selection committee as recently as the World Twenty20 in September this year, have called for drastic changes to the team they themselves built, strongly criticising the captaincy of MS Dhoni.

Mohinder Amarnath, who was asked to leave the selection committee under speculation that he didn’t comply with the BCCI’s demands, has been the strongest voice in asking for Dhoni to be sacked. “Dhoni doesn’t find a place in the team,” Amarnath said. “What has he done for the team in the last one year? The selection committee does not have guts to remove Dhoni.”

Amarnath said he was not bitter about his removal from the selection panel. “I am not against Dhoni,” he said. “It is not that I do not like him. But we should look at it from a broader perspective. It is important to look at current performance of players rather than past performances.” Amarnath suggested a split captaincy as the alternative. “There is no harm in having different captains for different forms of the game,” he said. “I am impressed with Virat Kohli in the shorter version of the game. Gautam Gambhir could be a replacement for Dhoni in Tests.”

Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of the previous committee that was reluctant to make changes, has come out all guns blazing. Two days after saying Dhoni has lost control over things and that he is confused, Srikkanth has written in a column that the team needs to acknowledge failures, which is exactly what the previous selection committee headed by him didn’t do.

“Time has come for everyone to own up responsibility and stand up to be counted,” Srikkanth wrote. “It is also time to stop blaming the conditions for every reversal. A good team must perform in all conditions and not lend too much thought on things they have no control over.”

Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of selectors before the last committee took over, said there weren’t many options available. “We are struggling with options at present,” he said. “Some players are struggling with injuries. We do not have strong replacements for these players. The team members have to remove themselves from their comfort zone and perform well.”

Mohammad Azharuddin said that it was right decision by the selectors to drop Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh from the team for the fourth and final Test against England, says a report in The Indian Express.

“The selectors’ decision to keep non-performing players out of the team is proper. Not only these two but all those who are not performing should be rested,” he said.

Azharuddin said that both Harbhajan and Yuvraj are class players and they would surely come back in Team India. “They have plenty of cricket left in them and would surely come back in the national side.”

On Sachin’s retirement, he said, “Sachin is a great player and let him and selectors decide about his future. The selection committee is the proper body to decide about who should play and who should retire.”

Meanwhile, The Times of India reports about the team selected for the coming matches.
