Keen to produce biopic on Tiger Pataudi, Saif Ali Khan claims he won’t be ideal choice to essay charismatic cricketer, roots for younger heroes

With biopics gaining popularity in Bollywood, there has been chatter, over the past two years, about a film on one of India’s most charismatic cricketers – Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. The legend’s son, actor Saif Ali Khan, is part enthusiastic and part wary on the subject. Khan asserts that he is interested in bringing his father’s life to screen, provided he finds an actor who will do justice to it.

“I am keen to produce the film. But we have to find the right guy who can play my father,” he begins, cautioning that it will not be an easy film to make. “There is not much footage available. So whoever plans to make it, will have to do a lot of research.” Asked if he could be a contender for the role, given his innate style and effortless elegance – a gene that we suspect runs in the family – he dismisses the idea. “I don’t think I am sexy enough. He was a stylish person and played the game with his own style. He carried the right attitude. I don’t think I can copy him.”

Khan reasons that at 47, he won’t be the right choice to play the cricketer, who was a force to reckon with in the ’60s. “Most of my dad’s glorious days on the field were when he was young. So I am not sure if I’d suit the part. Although I’d love to play him, I think we need a young actor.” Interestingly, Khan’s mother Sharmila Tagore had suggested that Ranbir Kapoor would be a perfect fit for the role of Tiger Pataudi – an idea that was then backed by Khan too. The star reveals that he channelled his father in Pradeep Sarkar’s 2005 hit, Parineeta. “That is one of the reasons why my mother liked Parineeta a lot,” he smiles, before adding, “In fact, my sister [Soha Ali Khan] told me that I looked like Abba in the film.”

Saif Ali Khan made a funny revelation at the launch of sister Soha Ali Khan’s book, ‘Perils of Being Moderately Famous’. The entire Pataudi family, along with husband, Kunal Kemmu were present there

Well, it’s not every day that you get to see the Pataudi family gathered all together under one roof. This iconic moment was witnessed at the maiden book launch of actress and now author, Soha Ali Khan. The book, ‘Perils of Being Moderately Famous’ is penned by the actress herself. To make the occasion a memorable one and extend their support to the Pataudi princess, the entire family from brother Saif Ali Khan, mother Sharmila Tagore, elder sister Saba Ali Khan, and husband-actor Kunal Kemmu to sister-in-law Kareena Kapoor Khan, were in attendance.

Every member shared the stage with Soha but when it was brother Saif’s turn, he said that Soha is a very sweet and generous person. He also recalled a hilarious date of Soha Ali Khan, where she almost embarrassed herself by calling the date ‘boring’. Being the gentleman that Saif is, he first took a ‘go ahead’ from Soha.

“She had gone out for dinner once. It was before she had met Kunal (Kemmu) (I hope he doesn’t mind me for saying it). It was kind of a date. He was a really wealthy guy, a big industrialist… he was talking to Soha and Soha was really bored… I don’t know if she was already seeing Kunal at that time (Kareena and Soha cut in saying, ‘No’) She just went out to be polite. So, a friend messaged her to ask how was it (the date) going and Soha replied saying, ‘It’s boring’. Only she messaged the guy. And now this is Soha – She asks the guy for his phone, takes it, deletes the message, hands over the phone and carries on. That’s my sister, Soha.”

Soha tied the knot with long-time boyfriend Kunal Kemmu on January 25, 2015, and the couple was blessed with a baby girl on September 29, 2017, who they named Inaaya Naumi Kemmu.

Director Akshat Verma says Saif Ali Khan was the first choice for his directorial venture ‘Kaalakaandi’ but at one point the makers did approach Fawad Khan to play the same part

saif fawad

Director Akshat Verma says Saif Ali Khan was the first choice for his directorial venture “Kaalakaandi” but at one point the makers did approach Fawad Khan to play the same part. Akshat has revealed that when the film was with UTV, they were in talks with Fawad to play the role, which is now being played by Saif. “Fawad was supposed to be one of the actors we talked to when the project was with UTV. It was around 2013… He was going to play the role Saif plays. But ultimately everything happens for a reason and for the best. No one could have done the role better than Saif,” Akshat says in an interview with PTI.

“Kaalakaandi” chronicles the story of six characters from different worlds of Mumbai in a span of 12 hours and how the lives of complete strangers intersect. Interestingly, Akshat says his “instinct for Saif was right” as he had written the film initially keeping him in mind. “When I first messaged Saif, I didn’t get a reply from him. When I finally met him, it was almost two years to the date I had texted him, and I still have the message saved. “This time, he had read the script because Ashi (Dua, one of the producers) had sent it to him. He said ‘ok we are on’ in five minutes. So the time period was, on one hand two years and on the other, just five minutes to get Saif,” he adds. Akshat dived into the world of “Kaalakaandi” right after his big hit “Delhi Belly”, which he had written. He took nearly a year to write the script of “Kaalakaandi” but the project went through “a mad roller coaster ride.” “It is common knowledge that the film was earlier with UTV, we were about to shoot but four days before that the project was shut down. After that things fell apart, we had to put it together again.

Everything takes time,” he said. Both “Delhi Belly” and “Kaalakaandi” fall in the genre of dark comedy, which is rarely explored in Bollywood. When asked is it because his scripts are so unconventional that people don’t really understand his language and vision, Akshat says, “Often people say they enjoy the script, love it, but (it is) not enough to make it as a film. It is like breaking up with someone by saying ‘I love you but not enough to marry you.'” But can the waiting period be frustrating and the director says, “it is the most disappointing part”. “You feel that the time seems to move in six months chunk.

Suddenly you look up and the year has gone by, it seems you haven’t done anything. You have been trying, waiting, they (makers) read your script, get back to you, six months have gone by and then they say ‘no,'” he said. In this scenario–where a project is being delayed and people are not willing to back your vision– Akshat says the only way to keep himself motivated was by being “stubborn.” Produced by Cinestaan Film Company and Ashi Dua Sara of Flying Unicorn, the film stars Saif along with Deepak Dobriyal, Vijay Raaz, Kunaal Roy Kapoor, Sobhita Dhulipala, Akshay Oberoi, Isha Talwar, Shenaz Treasury, Shivam Patil, Amyra Dastur and Neil Bhoopalam. “Kaalakaandi” is scheduled to release on January 12 next year.

saif-ali-khanSaif Ali Khan’s latest outing ‘Kaalakaandi’ has been the talk of the town ever since its inception. The actor, on Wednesday, launched the film’s first trailer that has been creating all the right kind of buzz. At the launch event, the actor expressed his delight over the current showbiz scenario. Talking about the possibility of his film clashing with the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’, Saif said, “If ‘Padmavati’ comes in (on 12th January), we will think of shifting our release date. I hope we don’t have to do that. ‘Kaalakaandi’ is a film I am proud of.”

While admitting that it is good to see films release alongside each other and do good business, he said that filmmakers are wary about it and take it into consideration. “It would have been nice to see Kaalakaandi releasing with Padmavati, as it shows that we have a film industry which makes a different kind of movies. Personally, I feel it’s good time to have films releasing alongside one another. But filmmakers are wary about it and you need to take that into consideration,” He said.

The trailer of ‘Kaalakaandi’ narrates the life of a man, who hasn’t had any addictions in life but is diagnosed with stomach cancer. The remaining story is about how the actor gives his life a new meaning

After back-to-back releasing Saif Ali Khan starrer, Kaalakaandi’s teasers and posters, the makers of the film have released the film’s official trailer at a private trailer launch event in the suburbs. The film’s trailer takes you to a never-seen-before avatar of Saif Ali Khan. The trailer shows Saif’s character as someone who realises that he is suffering from a deadly disease and how he wants to live his life to the fullest. The character starts living a hippie-life with getting himself involved in drugs, alcohol, and prostitutes. Also, there is an encounter of Saif shown with a transgender prostitute and how they make a narrow escape from the cops.

The poster, which was released on Wednesday morning, sees Saif in his character from the film, in which the actor seemingly looks zonked in his weird hairdo. With a fury shiny yellow scarf, he’s seen opening his arms wide with a gun in one hand and a glass of alcohol in another one, with the outline of the city.

Kaalakaandi‘s teaser poster was released on Tuesday. The colourful teaser poster had a silhouette of the lead actor, Saif Ali Khan resembling Michael Keaton’s ‘Birdman’. Talking about the teaser, which was released earlier, Saif’s character is pretty evident of being on an all-time high nature. Whether the excitement is infused with drugs or it’s his natural vibe, energy; that question can only be answered once the film releases on January 12, 2018.

Akshat Verma, the writer of the cult film ‘Delhi Belly’, promises to take you on another roller-coaster ride with his directorial debut. If ‘Delhi Belly’ exposed Delhi’s underbelly, ‘Kaalakaandi’ will reveal Mumbai’s underbelly and crime imbibed in it. Produced by Cinestaan Film Company and Ashi Dua Sara of Flying Unicorn, the film stars Saif Ali Khan along with the eclectic ensemble of Deepak Dobriyal, Vijay Raaz, Kunal Roy Kapur, Sobhita Dhulipala, Akshay Oberoi, Isha Talwar, Shenaz Treasury, Shivam Patil, Amyra Dastur and Neil Bhoopalam in a special appearance.

In an earlier interaction with mid-day, the ‘Chef’ actor had admitted that he badly needs a hit and would want to know what is going wrong (with his career). “It affects my image of being a star, because, a star is supposed to be bankable. Yet, it doesn’t affect my confidence,” admitted Saif.

Saif Ali Khan’s Sacred Games has been the object of curiosity ever since it was announced in June this year. After all, it marks video-streaming platform Netflix’s first original series for India, besides seeing directors Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane helming the thriller. While initial buzz suggested that the adaptation of Vikram Chandra’s novel by the same name would be an eight-episode-long finite series, mid-day has learnt that the narrative will be spread over four seasons now.

A source close to production reveals, “The series is based on the novel, but the plot has been developed to suit the visual medium. The makers are now looking at locking in four seasons.”

The source further adds that the eight episodes that are currently being shot in Mumbai will constitute the first season. Most popular web series follow the norm of having the narrative divided over a few seasons. We hear, the officials at Netflix as well as Kashyap and Motwane felt Sacred Games too would benefit from such a format. While retaining the essence of the bestseller, scriptwriters Varun Grover, Smita Singh and Vasant Nath have also added new characters and sub-plots to the series. “It will take time to establish these new characters as well as sub-plots. They will be explored over the course of the seasons.” Officials at Netflix refused to comment.

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s son, Taimur Ali Khan, has become a social media star even before he turns one. Khan feels the little one will soon get used to being clicked. “If he grows up to be like me, I think at some point, the poor chap will wish no one was watching him. Taimur is rather delectable, so I don’t blame anyone. It’s a price he has to pay for it,” says his father.

Saif Ali Khan

The box office hasn’t particularly favoured Saif Ali Khan for the last few years, with the actor braving almost 10 debacles since his last hit, Race 2 (2013), hit the marquee. While his contemporaries dismiss BO numbers, citing that they may not reflect people’s choice, Khan, who is currently prepping for the release of his Raja Krishna Menon-directed film, Chef, confesses that he is desperate for a hit. “It is important that Chef performs well, else I will have to question what is going wrong [with my career]. It affects my image of being a star, because, a star is supposed to be bankable. Yet, it doesn’t affect my confidence.”

Khan, who is currently shooting for India’s first Netflix original, ‘Sacred Games’, says box-office success is a validation of an actor’s credibility. But, he is quick to add that the roles coming his way reveal a different story. “[Despite the debacles of my past films], I still have three films and a Netflix series in my kitty. I have been the first choice for all these projects. So, I am sure I have done something right.” Addressing himself as a “late bloomer”, Khan says he has only begun understanding which script would develop into a notable outing, recently. “I am doing better work, working with better directors than I have,” says the actor, who has Akshat Verma’s ‘Kaalakandi’ and ‘Bazaar’, by Nikkhil Advani in the pipeline.

‘Dil Chahta Hai’ is one of those films that changed the way we look at and think about films. It not only became a cult flick but was appreciated and loved by everyone. The film gave us friendship goals and also taught us a lot about life. Still, when we remember DCH, it makes us all nostalgic and brings a smile on our faces.

Starring Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan, the film revolved around the lives of three friends and its complexities, giving it all a realistic feel. Well, one of the reasons many youngsters could connect to the film was because the story of Akash, Siddharth, and Sameer was so damn relatable. A lot of us have gone through what those characters went through.

But have you ever thought about how ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ turned out if some other actors were cast in place of Saif Ali Khan and Aamir Khan?

Not many know this fact, but Farhan Khan had a very different cast in mind than what we saw on-screen. I am sure the thought of seeing someone else as Akash and Sameer already makes us cringe!

Just Recently, Farhan appeared on Neha Dhupia’s podcast show “No Filter Neha” and revealed a lot about our all-time favourite film. And seriously, we thank god that some of his first choices never made it onscreen.

Farhan revealed that not Aamir Khan but Akshaye Khanna was always his first choice for the film.

DilChahtaHai(c) Twitter

“Akshaye Khanna was always the first choice. He was the first guy I ever met for that film. And I actually met him at that time because I wanted to cast him in the role that Aamir eventually played. So I spoke to him for the role that was Aakash,” Farhan disclosed.

Did you know that the actor-director had an entirely different star cast in mind for the film, something that we can’t even think of.

Dil Chahta Hai (c) Giphy

“I wanted him (Akshaye Khanna) to play Aakash. I wanted Hrithik as Sameer and I wanted Abhishek as Sid. That was my ideal casting.”

Looks like even the gods weren’t in favour of Farhan’s dream cast. Well, aren’t we just glad that things turned out differently?

Kangna RanautKangna Ranaut

On Sunday, the unstoppable Kangana Ranaut attended the press conference of her upcoming film ‘Simran’ and as usual spoke her mind and heart fearlessly.

The National award-winning actress tasted horrible failure with her last release ‘Rangoon,’ which also featured Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor.

Finally, sinking into it, she shared the experience saying, “Rangoon’s failure was a tragic one, there’s no hiding to it that I was drastically affected by it. I started to expect a lot with that film, but, later I got a much-needed reality check. I thought that when I escaped from my house, I thought of achieving a goal, and I have achieved more than that. Then, I started to realise that my expectations from my own self is rising higher, which is wrong. In that case, I’ll start turning greedy. So, somewhere, the failure gave me a sense of freedom. Now, I have a beautiful house of my own in Manali, which I’d never thought about.”

Further talking about her films not doing well, she stated, “If tomorrow, my films don’t work well, I’ll go to Manali. I’ve received three National Awards. I’m considered the leading face of the Hindi film industry. All this is a lot for me. When failure hit me, I thought it’s the end, nothing worse than this can ever happen to me, because people look down on you. However, it teaches you to be strong and gives you the much-needed push, and also makes you realise that nobody can pull you down than this because you’ve already tested the worst. So, it’s a kind of a relief to me.”

“For a girl like me, who was nothing and now, has achieved everything, I think nothing is impossible for me, I can achieve everything in this world. I’m not insecure in any way. I’m content with what I have,” signs off Ms Ranaut.

Her film ‘Simran’ will hit the screens on September 15.
