Away from the flashbulbs and legion of die-hard fans, the megastar celebrated his 75th birthday at the beach destination. The Bachchan clan left for Maldives on Tuesday morning. The celebratory mood had set in right at the airport, as Bachchan was spotted joking away with daughter Shweta, and Navya.

Aishwarya, Aaradhya and the superstar were seen onboard a passenger bus at the Male International Airport in Maldives, along with Jaya and Abhishek. However, Bachchan’s 16-year-old grandson Agastya was missing in action. The teenager, who is studying at Sevenoaks School in London, had to give the family holiday a miss due to his ongoing semester.

They are staying at the luxury resort, One & Only Reethi Rah in Kaafu Atoll, a family favourite — they had stayed at the same address during Abhishek’s birthday last year as well. The resort boasts of 12 beaches and each island houses one villa, offering complete privacy to its visitors.

mid-day learnt that Abhishek, Aishwarya and Shweta arranged a special midnight bash to bring in the patriarch’s birthday.

Iulia Vantur and Salman KhanIulia Vantur and Salman Khan

Having taken charge of her career and helping her bag music projects in Bollywood, Salman Khan seems ready to take his ‘friendship’ with Romanian actress Iulia Vantur to the next level.

Buzz is that Sallu has been hunting for a plush penthouse since last year to gift his rumoured girlfriend. A broker in the know tells mid-day, “He has been heavily investing in properties for his family and also buying a flat for Iulia.”

Reports suggesting that he has already gifted a house to Iulia aren’t true, insists a source. “The pre-requisite is that the property must be close to Salman Khan‘s Galaxy Apartments on Bandstand.

“A few buildings that the actor has checked out include Jivesh Terrace, The Address and Sagar Resham, all in the vicinity of his house. They are either duplex houses or above 1,500-sq ft in size, in the range of R25-30 crore. He will finalise one after getting Iulia’s approval,” adds the source.

Iulia Vantur is close to Salman’s family, especially his sisters Arpita and Alvira, and is always seen at the Khan-daan’s functions. In fact, she had also accompanied them to Maldives for the first birthday celebrations of Salman’s nephew, Ahil.

salmanRomanian beauty Iulia Vantur has been stealing the limelight lately for her equation with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and his family. Although the two continue to stay mum about their relationship status, their recent trip together to Maldives along with the family did little to rubbish all those relationship rumours. However, on the work front, Iulia has been hitting the high notes, by crooning singles with Himesh Reshammiya, Manish Paul while also crooning her own renditions of hit songs like ‘Main hoon hero tera’ and ‘Baby ko bass pasand hai’.

During the shoot of her music video ‘Every night and day’, Iulia was asked about her proximity with Salman and his family. According to a report, the Romanian television star remained tight-lipped about her link-up, but couldn’t help gushing about the Khan family. Calling the entire family “beautiful”, Iulia said that she really admired them for their “unity and welcoming attitude”. She also went on to say that “their doors are always open for everyone”.

Iulia has been spotted on several occasions, tagging along with the Khan family on holidays, festivals, get-togethers and even birthday parties.

Indian infrastructure firm GMR will seek a compensation of over USD 800 million from Maldives for the termination of its airport deal here but Male is insisting on a “forensic audit” as it feels the actual amount would be less than half.

“We have sent a letter to the Maldivian government indicating a number of more than USD 800 million as compensation amount. This is our initial estimate. The final figure would be based upon various calculations, loss of profit among others,” GMR (Airports) CFO Sidharath Kapur said.

The Maldivian government, however, debunked the calculations and insisted on getting a forensic audit done through an international firm.

“We will go in for a forensic audit as we want to see how much money has poured in to GMR coffers through the Male International Airport and how much actual money has been spent here. As per our information, GMR has cashed in only USD 150 million of the about USD 350 loan it had bagged through a bank,” Maldives President Mohamed Waheed’s press secretary Masood Imad said.

Asked if GMR is open to a forensic audit, Kapur said, “Our books are transparent. The concession agreement signed with Maldives government did not have the clause of forensic audit. Having said that, I must add that we don’t have any objection to an audit but it has to come through proper legal process”.

Sources in the Maldivian government say that the compensation amount, as per their calculations, should come to about a lower limit of USD 150 million and an upper limit of USD 350 million.

“We will present our case before the Singapore Court and let them take the call,” a source said.

The USD 500 million airport project contract awarded to GMR for modernising and operating the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA), signed in 2010 during the previous regime of Mohamed Nasheed, was “unilaterally” terminated by the current government on November 27.

The airport was taken over by the Maldives Airports Company Limited after a high-voltage legal tussle in which GMR had initially got a stay order on the termination from the Singapore High Court.

However, the Singapore Supreme Court ruled on November 6, a day before the notice period expired, that Maldives has the power to take over the airport on November 6.

Replying to a query if GMR is not welcome in Maldives anymore, Masood said, “We don’t have anything against GMR. We had objection to the contract that was signed under dubious conditions. We will in the future initiate a lot of infrastructure projects and GMR is welcome to bid for it.”

However, sources in the know said that the “unlawful” termination of the contract sends a “negative signal” to foreign investors, a stand taken by Indian government too.

“It now feels that any contract signed with a particular regime can be scrapped when a new government comes in. It is a risky proposition,” a source said.

Asked if Maldives will seek fresh bids for the modernisation and the operations of the airport, Imad said the cabinet has given the nod to set up a new company called Maldives International Airport Limited that will takeover from MACL. However, he added the structure of MIAL is yet to be finalised.

Refuting the allegations that the move to terminate the contract was a political one to whip up emotions before the elections next year, Imad said, “Protests against the contract have been taking place since the first day it was signed by Nasheed. There were regular protests and marches happening”.

He added, “We had a set of issues that needed to be looked into after we came to power. We are tackling them one by one and airport issue was one of them. We consulted reputed international law firms and they agreed with us that the contract was not valid. It is only then we terminated”.

“The President has not even said if he might or might not run for Presidency. It is completely wrong to say that it was done for political mileage. We are only setting the wrong done by Nasheed right,” he added.

NEW DELHI: Tata Housing Development Company has ruled out pulling out of Maldives and is discussing with the government there regarding an alternate site for a housing project following plans to construct the Supreme Court on one of the allotted sites.

The Tata group entity also said it is “seriously considering” the island government’s offer of an alternate land parcel instead of an earlier location and hopes to settle the issue within next 1-2 months.

“We are not pulling out of Maldives. We are amicably discussing with the government there. We hope that in the next 1-2 months, we will have a final settlement,” Tata Housing Development Company Senior vice-president (International Business and New Business Initiatives) Sandeep Ahuja said on Monday.

The company has been facing issues with the government there for one site, in which a Supreme Court building is planned. The Indian firm was offered four sites to develop housing projects.

“We have four land parcels under our possession in Maldives and out of that construction work is going on in three sites. For the fourth one, the government is requesting us to take an alternate land and has offered us 3-4 sites. We are seriously considering their offer,” Ahuja said.

The company will not have any issue in relocating its housing project to a new site provided the land is of the same size, in similar location and is not sub-standard, he added.

The development regarding the Tata Housing project comes close on the heels of the take over of GMR’s $500 million airport project by the Maldives government.

When asked if Tata Housing has any issue with Maldives government, Ahuja said: “They (Maldives government) are having problems with GMR. We are not having any problem with them. We are working on for some mutually acceptable solutions.”

He said the company officials will soon be visiting Maldives to see all the locations offered by the government and then take a decision soon.

Elaborating on projects in Maldives, Ahuja said the company is developing 500 houses over the next 2-3 years at an investment of $40 million.

“Out of the four locations, two will be handed over to the Maldives government for housing for poor, while the remaining two will be with us for commercial sale in the open market,” he added.

Besides Maldives, Tata Housing Development Company is investing $60 million to develop properties in Sri Lanka. It is also looking at opportunities in other South East Asian nations such as Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

India enforces freeze on aid to Maldives: ReportZeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Amid the raging diplomatic row over the unilateral cancellation of the GMR contract, India has put on hold a Rs 250 crore loan to Maldives which was part of a bilateral trade agreement, reports said on Friday.

The move comes on a day when the Maldives government is all set to take over the Male airport operations from GMR Male International Airport Authority later in the day.

A Singapore court on Thursday ruled that the Maldives Government can take back the Male International Airport from the private firm.

India enforces freeze on aid to Maldives: Report

Reacting to Singapore court’s judgement Maldives President’s Press Secretary Masood Imad said, “Singapore Court of Appeal has ruled that Maldives government has authority to take back the airport from GMR.”

“Maldives will go ahead with the transfer as scheduled,” Imad added.

Maldives had in a surprise move on November 27 terminated the over USD 500 million contract awarded to GMR during the previous regime of Mohamed Nasheed to upgrade its Male airport and to build a new terminal.

The government had said it was terminating the contract because it was signed under “dubious conditions” and was void, a charge hotly contested by the infrastructure major.

India enforces freeze on aid to Maldives: Report

Following the termination, GMR had approached the Singapore High Court which had stayed the scrapping of contract. However, the Maldives government remained defiant and asserted that it would take over the airport from GMR on Saturday, a day after the notice period ends.
