Actress Kalki Koechlin wonders why people associate pleasure with sin. Kalki launched jewellery designer Farah Khan’s MagnumXFarahKhan Collection, inspired by ice cream brand Magnum’s idea of Taking Pleasure Seriously, here on Tuesday.

The actress, the muse of the line, was asked what she prefers in life — ‘pleasure seriously or secret sins’.

She said: “I don’t know why people associate pleasure with sin. I think pleasure should be taken seriously and celebrated. I think you can’t give pleasure if you don’t take pleasure, so it’s a very important part of life.”

On the one pleasure that she takes seriously, Kalki said: “I really enjoy being on stage… Generally being in the theatre and being on stage in front of a live audience is the moment when I am most present, when I am not thinking about anything else and that for me is pleasure… To be in the moment.”

Her upcoming film includes Gully Boy, about street rappers in Mumbai.

“It’s about Dharavi slum rapping. Some of the rappers including Divine, Naezy and Kaam Bhari have written some amazing lyrics for the film. Ranveer Singh is playing a rapper in the film and I am playing music producer who helps him in one of the songs in it. Alia Bhatt is also in the film and the film will be out early next year,” Kalki said.

The musical drama, releasing on February 14 next year, is directed by Zoya Akhtar.

Kalki Koechlin says celebs should not give opinions on topics they know little about

Kalki Koechlin has always been vocal about her views on various social issues, but the actor believes celebrities should not give opinions on serious subjects unless they are well-versed with them. The 33-year-old says there is always a risk associated with being a public figure as there are chances of one’s views being misinterpreted. Koechlin says, “I believe when a celebrity voices an opinion, there are chances for it to be taken out of context. The celebrity should personally relate to the subject. If they just put a face to the cause, without knowing about it, it doesn’t serve the purpose.”

She adds, “I agree with the fact that when a public figure supports a cause, it makes a big impact. It involves a lot of people and gives confidence to others to talk about the issue. But ultimately, the change comes from the entire community. Branding by a celeb is just a seed.” The actor says she is growing as an artiste and has found a novel approach to express herself. “I am doing a lot of experimental films as well as theatre. I am doing more of indie stuff as I don’t get that many commercial offers, but I am busy. I don’t have any complaints and I am happy about the experiences. I am constantly evolving as an actor. I keep finding newer ways of expressing myself,” says Koechlin, who will next be seen doing a cameo in Shanawaz Nellikunnil’s Candyflip. There is also a web-series lined up with filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, which is about a big fat wedding gone horribly wrong.

Gender stereotype is an old-age tradition running in the blood of the Hindi film industry. There are many powerful films released recently, which are trying to eradicate this gender inequality. Slowly, but steadily maybe we’ll see the change, wherein the heroine’s role is not limited only to be the hero’s side stock or objectified as sexual subjects.

Discussing a few ideas on how can one change this and the harassment the heroines have to undergo at workplaces, the “honest” as she likes herself to be called over “outspoken”, talented Richa Chadha and Kalki Koechlin poured their hearts out over a candid luncheon with mid-day, while promoting their upcoming light-hearted, coming-of-age film’Jiah Aur Jiah’, which hits the 70 mm on October 27.

They both are known for doing commercial as well as independent films while talking about the carefree character of Kalki in the film, the topic deviated to whether an Indian parent instantly agrees on sending their daughters out on a road-trip or is hesitant given the amounts of tragic instances occurring every other day and women empowerment.

Speaking about it, Kalki said, “It is a patriarchal world. And we are the first generation who is talking about it. My nine-year-old brother will grow up different to our generation, as we talk about period, gender equality in front of him.”

As the conversation flowed on, the topic about actresses’ lives in the film industry popped up. On being asked whether Bollywood needs a women collective body like the Tamil film industry, Richa and Kalki instantly jumped in agreement saying that we should have one in Bollywood.

“We definitely need this body in Bollywood. I think there is a body of women in films and television where they listen to each other’s talks over lunch for an hour. There is a need for a collective body, especially, given how rampant the sexual harassment is…”

“Harassment is not just when somebody comes to you inside and says,’Come, sleep with me.’ All these are old tactics. Now, there are new ways of sexual harassment. It’s a problem when you go on an outdoor and the director calls you at 7 am. It is a problem because then we have to wake up at 5 or 6 am in the morning for work and we are not like those shabby girls who are desperate to make it. We are girls from great families. We have an education with the character or the path that we have chosen. Can we not do it with dignity? Why don’t you allow her (the actress) and if you don’t allow her or if you don’t let her then one day it will blow up and it will happen,” stated the ‘Fukrey’ actress.

She further went on to add how the audience is tolerant of watching heroes age on-screen but not heroines.

“It’s about how you talk about women. How will you tell a girl who’s doing a commercial film that’Oh, she’s 32 now, by 35 some other girl will come.’ Why aren’t they accepting, whereas they are okay accepting heroes who are 50, 60 and 70 who are still wearing vests and half-pant and running around? The truth is no matter what you do the world will not survive without women. It’s important; it’s not something that you can ignore by not giving women their right,” concluded Richa Chadha.

Raise your hand if you dream of travelling the entire world, sometime in the future. Yes? Everybody? We thought so.

It’s rather difficult to come across a person who wouldn’t want to travel the world. However, due to certain commitments and issues (mostly monetary), it remains a far-fetched dream. So, for most of us, resorting to movies that take us to exotic locations through the medium of cinema, compensates for our otherwise not-so-happening lives. But it isn’t just the location that does the trick.

When directors add interesting characters with tales of friendship and locations in a never-seen before manner, it makes for the perfect combination. It’s no wonder why movies like ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani hai Deewani’ did wonders on the box office!

So if you have been feeling a void in that wanderlust-inspiring-movie genre, then here’s some good news. Kalki Koechlin and Richa Chadha are coming together in a movie that will take you on a roller coaster ride and inspire you to take that long-pending road trip with your friends.

‘Jia aur Jia’ is a story about two women, played by Richa Chadha and Kalki Koechlin that share the same name (no points for guessing this one)- Jia.

But apart from their names, nothing and we mean absolutely nothing is similar.  Despite their differences, they embark on a life-changing journey.

The trailer starts off by showing us how the character of Richa Chadha, an uptight banker called Jia, meets her contrasting, happy-go-lucky personality i.e. Kalki’s character ‘Jia’.

When it comes to road trips or any trip for that matter, one would obviously prefer going with like-minded people as your trip can go seriously wrong if you are stuck with a person who is exactly your opposite. But from what we can judge by the trailer, this movie will shatter this stereotype in the most interesting and fun way possible.

The conflicts that arise between the two of them will bring a smile to your face and brighten up a dull day. From almost hating each other to becoming the best of friends and sharing their darkest secrets, the movie sure takes a refreshing look at female friendships while taking you through the beautiful country of Sweden. It somehow reminded us of the Kangana Ranaut starrer ‘Queen’ and the blockbuster ‘Zindagi Na MIlegi Dobara’ and we don’t mind this vibe at all.

Have a look at the trailer:

The film also stars actor Arslan Goni in a pivotal role.

Yesterday, Kalki Koechlin posted a nude monochrome snapshot of herself on Instagram. She wrote, “Half way between shadow and light. Love your nakedness.” This was the actor’s way of telling people to be body positive.

The picture has been clicked by TV actress-turned-photographer Riva Bubber, who was seen on the small screen a decade ago. She is best remembered as Damini Virani from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

Kalki Koechlin’s next apparent release is supposed to be ‘Jia Aur Jia’ where she will be seen alongside Richa Chadha.

The 33-year-old Bollywood actress’ claim to fame came in 2009 in the Bollywood hit ‘Dev.D’ and she followed up with it in movies like ‘Shaitan’ and ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’.

Akshay Kumar is one of those actors in the industry who often talks about social issues that we hesitate to even discuss. He encourages people to come out and speak out about their problems, instead of just living with them.

He actively takes parts in seminars where you will find him talking about self-defence, women's safety, and children's problems as well as encouraging people that they talk for help.

But, this time he went a step further and spoke about an incident that happened to him when he was just six.

It takes a lot of courage to talk about something as sensitive as this. Akshay Kumar revealed that he was molested by a liftman at the age of 6. At an international conference on Human Trafficking, he took a page out of his life and shared it with everyone in order to raise awareness about sexual harassment and abuse.

He said, “When I was a child, my parents always encouraged me to speak to them frankly about everything. Whether it was discussing a sexual issue or inappropriate behaviour, I was asked to come home and talk frankly.”

This incident affected him so much that he has to share it on this platform. “The cops took action and the man was arrested. I was a shy kid and was relieved that I could speak about this to my parents. But even today, I find it difficult to say the word ‘bum'. We must encourage women and children to speak up and tell their families if they encounter anything strange so that they can be protected and empowered.”

In a country where molestation and rapes happen every few minutes, it is important someone talks about it and gives it the required importance, instead of brushing it aside.

In the past, other celebrities like Kalki Koechlin, Swara Bhaskar, Sonam Kapoor and other have also opened about their traumatic past. This actually starts a much needed debate regarding these sensitive topics and gives people the push they need to talk about such issues as well.

Much power to Akshay Kumar who decided to stand up and speak up about something as crucial as this. We salute him!
