Superhero movies are always a treat to our eyes. After all, we all grew up dreaming of becoming a superhero with the ability to wipe out evil. DC and Marvel’s cinematic universe has truly added fodder to our imagination, by bringing these characters out of the comic books and onto the big screen.

Be it an otherworldly demigod who has special powers or an eccentric billionaire who can create an army of ‘Otherworldly creatures,’ we have seen it all. These movies not only captured our hearts and imagination, but also got the bank rolling.

1. Spider-Man: Homecoming ($879.1 Million)

Tom Holland as Spider-Man didn’t have too many takers, but when he stepped into the superhero’s shoes, he stunned critics with his performance. The effort to make the movie different from all the previous installments also worked for the team as they went on to earn more than any of the previous movies which featured Spider-Man. Now that sounds like one hell of a successful job. The second part is scheduled to release in the second half of 2019.

2. Wonder Woman ($821.2 Million)

This movie was a total game-changer for DC. From being loved by critics to the viewers, this movie created a buzz across the globe. Gal Gadot, as Wonder Woman, received massive critical acclaim for her acting while director, Patty Jenkins, was praised by everyone for her skilled handling of the character. ‘Wonder Woman’ went on to become the highest grossing movie ever directed by a woman. ‘Wonder Woman 2’ is scheduled to release in 2019.

3. Deadpool ($783.1 Million)

Our favourite R-rated antihero, Deadpool, is third on this list. The film received praise for staying true to the comic books. Reynolds was loved for his comic timing and better approach to acting than in Green Lantern. It also received several nominations and awards. Deadpool 2 is scheduled for an early 2018 release.

4. Doctor Strange ($677 Million)

‘Doctor Strange’ was a feast for our eyes, owing to the visual effects implemented in the movie. Such was the quality that it was even nominated for an Academy Award for its use of visual effects. A part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange is now expected to make an appearance in the next ‘Avengers’ movie.

5. Thor ($449.3 Million)

Part-god, part-superhero, ‘Thor’, was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011 as the fourth film of the franchise. Since then, it has had a sequel in 2013, and the third film, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is set to hit the theatres this year. Any ‘Thor’ fan here?

6. Batman Begins ($374.2 Million)

With the first part of ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy, Christopher Nolan used ‘Batman Begins’ to re-introduce Bruce Wayne and Batman to the world. With a darker undertone than the previous Batman movies and a concentration towards building Batman more than his enemies, ‘Batman Begins’ is hailed as one of the best superhero films ever made. And well, we couldn’t agree more. The story-arc came to an end with ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, which released in 2012.

Christian Bale is one of the most dedicated actors out there. He is quite well-known for going to great lengths to transform himself for his movie roles.

To play the role of drug-addict Dicky Eklund in ‘The Fighter’ he shed the pounds big time, but that was nothing compared to the lengths he went to while preparing for 2003’s ‘The Machinist’.

His famous skeletal frame for that movie was achieved through a diet of “water, an apple and one cup of coffee per day, with the occasional whiskey.” Apparently after losing about 30kgs, he wanted to go even further, but producers had to stop him because he could have died.

And, then 6 months after that, he was playing the lead role in ‘Batman Begins’ for which he had to bulk up big time. With a high-protein diet and regime involving heavy-core, plyometrics and resistance training, he packed on a whopping 45kgs, only for Christopher Nolan to turn around and tell him to lose about 10 because he’d got a bit too fat.

Now, he has gone and done it again. Christian Bale debuted a plumper look over the weekend at the Telluride Film Festival, where he premiered his upcoming movie ‘Hostiles’.

He looks unrecognizable now as he prepares to portray former US Vice President Dick Cheney in an up-coming bio pic. He has even dyed his eyebrows blond to emulate the politician.

The biopic is called ‘Backseat’, and will focus on how Cheney’s politics “changed the world.” It also stars Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, Sam Rockwell as former President George W. Bush, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld and Bill Pullman as Nelson Rockefeller.

Seems like quite a complicated role, but if there’s anyone who can pull it off and make the film memorable, it’s Christian.
