Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has been in the industry for around two decades, says the only person he doesn’t lie to is filmmaker Aditya Chopra.

On audio and music streaming service Saavn’s audio show “Take 2 with Anupama and Rajeev”, Karan spoke at length about his career, his choices and the ups and downs of his life, read a statement.

“Aditya Chopra and I have a really amazing bond when it comes to our opinions. We message and call each other when we love a film, when we don’t, then the silence is meant to be understood. We have this like unfailing protocol that exists between us,” Karan said.

“The moment I see a film of his and I have not liked it and he has done the same, there will be silence. There is complete silence. And if I love it, I will pick up the phone and he knows that and I know that.

“I actually get really excited when he calls me and so does he because we don’t talk to each other because we can’t lie. He is never going to lie to me and I am not going to lie to him because he will catch me in that moment and I don’t think Adi is capable of lying. We have that code of silence. Aditya Chopra is the only person I don’t lie to,” he added.

Karan, known for films like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Student Of The Year” and “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, believes the industry has “organically honest people”, but then there are a “bunch of big liars”.

“There are a host of honest people. If you meet Farah Khan (filmmaker), she can’t lie to you. I don’t know if Farah Khan is capable of lying, so she doesn’t go inside the preview theatre only because like many a time, I know she has walked out and said things in a way that you can catch her.

“There are a few people who cannot be… I know Jaya aunty (Jaya Bachchan), for example, it’s scary to call her because she is going to be really honest,” said Karan.

“If you call her you got to be ready for it. So, she tells me, she says ‘Karan, I don’t want to see your films at screenings because I won’t be able to lie to you. If I don’t like it, I will tell (you) and I don’t want to upset you’. So, there are those who are also organically honest people and they can’t lie, but the rest of us, we are a bunch of big liars. I mean we are all lying through our teeth and to another level,” he added.

Her million dollar smile, the innocence on her face and her strong acting prowess in her debut social drama film ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’ swoon the entire audience, thus creating a special space in their hearts. Yes, she is the ‘bong’ queen Rani Mukerji and Durga Puja for the Mukerjis is a grand annual celebration with family and friends.

Rani Mukerji: My parents met and fell in love during Durga Puja festivities
Rani Mukerji

Talking to Hindustan Times about her childhood memories associated with Durga Puja, the ‘Mardaani’ actress said, “For Bengalis, the five days of Durga Puja is probably Diwali, Holi and Eid combined. My earliest memories are from the time when I was three. At that point, Durga Puja was a very close-knit family affair. All the kids from my family had to perform on stage because it’s sort of a must for Bengalis. So, I also remember performing on stage and have seen it since three. I became a butterfly once, and also Lord Krishna besides participating in so many of dances based on Rabindranath Tagore’s plays and other works.”

Revealing further about how special the festival is for the entire Mukerji clan, the gorgeous beauty affirmed, “My parents met for the first time and fell in love during Durga Puja celebrations when a singer didn’t turn up and my mother filled in, so he flipped hearing her sing. So, I think the festival has a lot of memories – from my parents meeting for the first time to me remembering how actively my dad and mum were involved [in arrangements]. Even now, my mother is involved but my dad hasn’t been keeping well.”

Ask the 39-year-old actress if daughter Adira will also get the same experiences as she had as a child, and she asserts, “I don’t know because it all was very unadulterated at that time. Now even the fact that we have attended Durga Puja is covered by the media. So, if I am doing a ritual at the puja, a camera constantly follows me. I don’t think Adira would experience things like that because if she goes to the pandal, she would get a lot of attention that we didn’t get as kids. When you are one of the many, your experiences are different.”

On the professional front, post embracing motherhood, Rani Mukerji is making a comeback on the silver screen with ‘Hichki’, which will be helmed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Maneesh Sharma under the banner of her husband’s Yash Raj Films.

A Yash Raj birdie chirps to say that producer Aditya Chopra was apparently not impressed with the rushes of Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs Of Hindostan, which was recently shot in Malta.

He is keen that certain portions of the Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh-starrer be reshot. It is said that a set is being recreated at YRF for the reshoot. But then it’s just a rumour.
