In what came across as a shock to the entire nation, National Award winning veteran director was slapped and physically assaulted by unruly protestors from Karni Sena two days ago. The Rajput protestors broke into the sets of SLB’s upcoming film ‘Padmavati’ starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor and not only vandalized the sets and equipment but even slapped the director. The video made it to social media and left the entire film fraternity massively outraged (and rightly so).

All of Bollywood came together to call out the intolerance behind the violent protests and spoke up about how an artist’s freedom has never been more endangered in a country that calls itself democratic.

I’m waiting to see how many people are punished for what they’ve done to #SanjayLeelaBhansali & his crew. There’s enough evidence.

Anyone who truly values their history doesn’t attack, they study. They don’t care about history, they want headlines. #SanjayLeelaBhansali

Thoughts of what has transpired with Sanjay Bhansali today are just not leaving me!! Feeling helpless and angry!! This cannot be our future!

— Karan Johar (@karanjohar) January 27, 2017

But what was the most saddening was how the three stars who are a part of that very same film were as shaken as they were outraged. Deepika Padukone stood by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and made it cleared for the last time that the film did not distort any historical facts.

In a state of shock!deeply saddened and disheartened by yesterday’s events!#Padmavati

— Deepika Padukone (@deepikapadukone) January 28, 2017

As Padmavati I can assure you that there is absolutely no distortion of history.#Padmavati

— Deepika Padukone (@deepikapadukone) January 28, 2017

Our only endeavour is & has always been to share with the world the story of this courageous & powerful woman in the purest form there is.????

— Deepika Padukone (@deepikapadukone) January 28, 2017

Ranveer Singh who plays Allaudin Khilji also expressed his displeasure.

As a team, we are making ‘Padmavati’ keeping in mind the sensitivities and emotions of the people of Rajasthan and the Rajput community.

— Ranveer Singh (@RanveerOfficial) January 28, 2017

Sanjay Sir is one of the most accomplished & authentic filmmakers we have in India, & he wont ever do anything to hurt anyones feelings.

— Ranveer Singh (@RanveerOfficial) January 28, 2017

Whats happened is very unfortunate. We hope the people of Rajasthan will understand & empathise with our intentions & give us their support.

— Ranveer Singh (@RanveerOfficial) January 28, 2017

Shahid Kapoor regretted not being there to defend Sanjay Leela Bhansali when the attack happened and his tweets were heartbreaking.

Very very sad. Words do fall short and feel too little to express feelings. Violence is unacceptable. This incident has shocked me.

— Shahid Kapoor (@shahidkapoor) January 28, 2017

We need to look deep within as a society, as a country, as a people. Where are we headed.

— Shahid Kapoor (@shahidkapoor) January 28, 2017

Sanjay bhansali is a film maker who the country should be proud of. You will know when u see #padmavati the dignity he brings to it.

— Shahid Kapoor (@shahidkapoor) January 28, 2017

The filming has currently been put on hold, given the present uproar in Jaipur. Let’s hope the film gets made without any further delay or hurdles but before that, let’s hope the protestors are held up for assaulting SLB and vandalizing the sets.
